Thanks, @Admiral Skizzy. Based on that, I'd say we're due for a security primary crew next. Any guesses?

wouldn't say no to two more stars on Robin Hood
I wonder if it will be themed alongside the December mega event...or if Dominion Dukat was just a nice coincidence this time around.
Daily rewards are, in general, intended as a way to help along newer players. I highly doubt they will ever introduce a new character in this manner. There's little incentive for them to do it when they could throw it in a pack to make $$ off of it.
I mean, I appreciate your perspective as a whale, but I don't see any reason for them not to do this. The featured monthly 4* card would still help along new players, AND be exciting for experienced players who have most of the cards already.
In fact, the only people who this would bother are likely the same players who get annoyed that mega events give people a "freebie" 4/5 character and who get angry when DB gives things away for free.
"Whale" is a relative term. Here, you're trying to use it as a pejorative to somehow minimize or invalidate my opinion, and it's nothing but an ad homenim attack that ignores my actual comment. I have spent no more than $200 over the two or so years I've played this game, mostly on monthly cards. I'm still VIP13. I am far from most of those in the "whale" class.
If "DB doesn't want to waste an opportunity to sell a character" isn't a reason that you can understand, then I don't really know that we're talking the same language. The first run of a character is, almost always, monetized in some fashion.
I understand that introducing a new character for free to everyone would be helpful to everyone. There's just minimal incentive for them to do something like that (especially when they are also already handing out a free 4/5 every other month already).
I am not mad or angry about the idea of them handing out something like that for free. I just have a more realist perspective in that DB is more likely to do something that will benefit their bottom line than something altruistic that would be an actually valuable handout to all players.
Whale or not, our opinions are moot given that DB’s profits are driven by monetization of new content. A brand new crew that is free for anyone does not monetize the content they have created. Even when we get free stuff from them that isn’t an apology for an error (Will Scarlett, EV Suit Archer, and the like) there is usually a way for DB to profit from it.
You DO realize most of the time I'm on here BEGGING DB to release all of the offers to everyone instead of targeting people with offers they don't want? Believe me, I'm not some idealistic socialist that wants all of us to have a bunch of free things. What I'm saying right now is that DB could have had a heck of a lot more of my money if they'd given me more offers, or even more chances to buy them at a time. The fact that they don't is proof that maybe they need to review their monetization methods.
First of all, I apologize. I've been playing about a year and 8 months and I've probably spent a lot more than $200. Also VIP 13, oddly enough. But you're wrong about one thing - it wouldn't be an entirely altruistic move on their part to give us a new character as the monthly:
I've been on these forums a long time, and people know I try to come up with solutions that benefit both DB and the player base, including people who spend AND people who don't. You know as well as I do, that the minute the first player claims that card, there will be a race to first to max. There will be people who don't want to wait 3 more months to FF, who will use citations. But also, getting a chance at this new character might cause some people who would normally only check in during events to log in every day, and thus be presented with more of DB's daily offers. There's definitely a WIN in here for both sides. One (probably mediocre) super-rare character given out for free over 4 months of requiring daily logins isn't going to put DB out of business. And it isn't going to stop everyone from buying packs. The fully immortal behold problem will take care of that.
In one breath we’re talking about why DB is not likely to release a new 4* character for free when they can put one into a Tuesday pack or event pack and therefore drive sales, in the next you’re saying that you would give them more money if you had the opportunity. Thanks for proving my point!
I agree that I would like to see DB re-evaluate the way they offer crew (and ships) for sale. It is obvious that the current model relies on whale sales - not people at VIP13 or below, not people a nose or two over the VIP14 threshold even, but those who drop hundreds or thousands of dollars every single week - and not on a modest increase in spending by the rest of us. Transitioning to a model that gets less money per person from more people isn’t without risk on their end, which is why they need time to do market research (which they may not act upon when complete anyway). I would like to think that the last several months of (hopefully) nobody buying Monday’s wretched ship offers would be enough but all we can do is speculate...
Don't oversimplify my argument and then tell me I'm proving your point. This isn't a one-item store, there are plenty of different offers to choose from. Your local grocery store giving away a loaf of bread for coming to their special event doesn't mean people are suddenly less likely to buy vegetables and meat once they arrive. Or even MORE bread! Again, the voyage only characters aren't in packs either - and I've accumulated most of them for free. That word, free, it almost feels like people in here use it derogatorily.
YES, I would buy great offers if they came up. I jumped on that Tactical Burnham offer that past week even after spending on the 10x10 packs, and I tried to get the Iconic Crew offer yesterday (steam was down), and today, I bought the $9.99 dilithium offer (for a couple more cracks at the Sherwood pack.) That has absolutely NOTHING to do with me saying that it would be nice to introduce a new 4* character as the featured monthly.
But yes, I'd never buy the ship offers. I'd really like to know who actually does.
Casting all the debate aside after the comment I quoted, GhostStalker, I think this would be way cool. All the debate is over whether this would happen or not. He didn’t say any of that. He merely said it would be cool and I totally agree.
It would undoubtedly be cool and a great way for DB to win back some good will from the player base. Other than those pressed for crew slots, I cannot fathom a reason why anyone would be mad or upset about that happening. But:

Thier job is to make a good game. If they do, they will be successful. Unfortunately the mobile gaming world has become a Skinner box full of addiction. In other words, making addictive rather than fun games.
Maybe everyone is just frustrated because DB is run by the equivalent of Ferengi. Regaurdless, it is a good suggestion that would breathe a little life into a dying game. DB making money is DBs problem, not mine
Whale or not, our opinions are moot given that DB’s profits are driven by monetization of new content. A brand new crew that is free for anyone does not monetize the content they have created. Yes, free legendaries trigger an offer to buy a second star. It is a marketing thing.
Principally, as a business, Isn't their job to make money?
Like I used to work on a holiday park. We would provide a service (the holiday) and the customer would pay us (their hard earned cash) for that holiday. They could chose to add extra items if they wished (10x event packs) or take the basic vacation provided.
Although we would strive to provide a value for money experience with great customer service in the hope that customer would return, there is a limit. They would purchase the holiday for a set duration (like a week, not all year) and we refused to give them free drinks all night long too.
DB have to find the balance where they make money, and we have fun, (or we won't want to give them our money any more) They might not always get it 100% right all of the time, but I honestly believe that they try.

If DB doesn't make money, DB goes out of business and the game goes away. The more they make, the more they can invest back in the game in the form of new features and such.
So, yes, the players (even F2P ones) have an interest in DB making money.
