Ship battles are less enjoyable now

I was happy with the ship battles and powers before DB decided they needed to be changed and now ship and skirmish battles are just frustrating and unenjoyable.

I can't collect all threshold rewards in Skirmish thanks to changing powers so now they have a backlash effect on the player's ship too, this is just stupid and puts off new players from getting good at the game.

Thanks a lot for Skirmish unnecessarily difficult than it already is now. For shame.

Because of these changes I made the very difficult change of switching from the Borg Cube to the Krayton.

In spite of this wretched change, I was able to lazily collect all the thresholds and I can now stare at my highly useful 3/4 Donatra.

  • I really don't see much of a change.... I use my Bounty in both Skirmishes and the Arena and it seems to preform as well (if not a little better) then it did before the change.

only thing I noticed, was my HMS Bounty, rather than avoiding those K'Tang cruisers .. I actually hunt them now ... LOL

But yeah, I like the idea of more variation and more abilities .. I really hate how they distributed them ... some just simply make no sense ...

I haven't changed any of my ship choices or strategies (both skirmish and arena). Seeing similar results as before.

I found the changes helped my Cube. Dropping ships shields and then slamming them with burst was a killer combo.

I don’t think the Cube was that different. The initialize time on the shield Disruptor is really long, while it is not that long for the laser cutting beam, Killy, and Valeris.
  • The new Cube power was a wash for me. Nice power, but didn't need it really. The other ship was destroyed before the power even finished cool down. I tried using it a few times, intentionally waiting, but it backfired and still had a sliver of health left when it got it's full shields back. That's the only time I really took any damage (waiting for my cool downs to refresh for a second round of attacks)

I switched to the Cube because it meant I could just mash the screen without watching.

I’m still rocking the Krayton in blinkered fashion. If anything it’s got easier to destroy cloaked ships

Same, and over the weekend, I saw less overnight drop in rank when I was away. (Though that might be due to people being tired of ship battles during a Skirmish Weekend)

  • No luck with the “Valdore Too Far Skirmish Event. I too hate the Skirmish event. You can’t even get the legendary ship that you want for the Epic battle.

But if you have a level 10 Bounty or Borg Cube, and at least one event crew, you'll get tol 2000 or higher.

I wish to echo the sentiments of many who have already responded and report that I enjoy the new changes, and feel they have made ship battles more interesting.

I mostly like the new abilities. I'm not winning as consistently in the Captain Division but battles are a little more varied now.
  • I like that the playing field is a *little* more even between ships in the same divisions now, in the arena. In the Skirmishes, I noticed a bit more difficulty in phase 2, which is exactly as it should be. It took some collaboration amongst fleetmates to get the exact crew to demolish anything in under 5 seconds. That being said, I did clear the thresholds in the first 50 minutes of the event. :-/

The new ship abilities are definitely a step in the right direction. Before, Arena battles were a game of Paper, Rock, Scissors where 95% of people threw rock, and there was no Paper.
  • Just load in an event crew and you get full bonus.

If you are new to the game and don’t have a few 10/10 ships or decent crew, then yeah, skirmishes can be somewhat time consuming. But any moderately established player would have no problem clearing top threshold in a few hours at the absolute greatest.

I used the T’Ong, Ardra, and Killy to end every battle in under 10 secs. If anything, my load seemed lighter this time around.

I'm still throwing Rock. Paper seems to be on backorder.

There's no shortage of commentary from experienced players. The forum is generally skewed that way by its very nature. I bought a Killy a while ago and put her in my 10/10 Krayton and had no problem. I also like the changes for the 5* ships. I took my Krayton to first place in Admiral for the first time.

But what of the situation for newer, more casual, and/or non-spending players? I would like to hear more about @pieman247 's situation. Were you playing the Skirmish on Normal, Epic, or Elite? Which ship did you use? Which crew?

I would also like to add some encouragement. Before I spent money, I realized the value of the dabo wheel. That is your ticket to 5* ships. Captain's division can be your ticket to a 4* ship. I had the best luck with a 4* ship in skirmishes until I had a 10/10 5* ship, which took about 5 months of dabo spins. The prospect may look daunting, but there is a path to improving your game without spending money. I hope you stick with it and I wish you luck.

There is also some good help on the forum if you ask questions. Folks on here are mostly friendly and willing to share information.

I'm an...how to describe it, moderate spender? I've never failed to buy my monthly card, and I've probably bought 5-7 special offers ranging from $5-10 (if this is not actually moderate spending, please forgive me). I've also only been playing for 3.5 months, so my crew is varied and non-optimized, plus I do not think I have any ship above rank 7 except that ship they start you with.

I just ranked...umm...I was in the tier that missed the legendary but got 4 Spocks, so something like 1,450? I started the event with a fully-equipped event Spock (got lucky on a premium pack rip two weeks ago!) and slotted him in my U.S.S. Defiant (rank 7?) along with Tuvix and Talos IV Spock (honestly I had other options here, but I liked the idea of rolling with 2.5 Vulcans) and I ran Elite level exclusively. I chose the U.S.S. Defiant because of the cloak and because it hits hard.

I burned, I want to say 5,000 or so chronitons throughout the weekend and used a supply kit first, and then I went HAM last night skirmishing for 6 hours straight. I ended most fights quickly, and always took the bonus roll instead of fixing my ship. I hit threshold using this strategy in before phase 1 was over, but since we are trying to build our new fleet from scratch I went for it hard last night.

Not sure if that answers your question, lol

My criticism, instead, would be that it's even more difficult than before to figure out what is actually happening during a ship battle. Or, in other words, it's far easier to find a crew and ship combination that works, than to start understanding why it works, and what your various opponents were doing.

I, for one, would love to see a "sensor log" or "black box" feature that would let you examine a battle in detail, after it has ended.

Often, currently, I am just left with questions when I am unexpectedly obliterated.

(Not saying that I can't hit #1 in Admiral; I can and do, but I always feel I could optimise more, if only I had more info.)

That does answer some questions. That sounds a lot like how I did in the first two skirmishes. There are two things that really helped me advance beyond that point.

    1) Join a good, active fleet. There will likely be someone there who can help you with the "why" certain crew and ships work. Along with other helpful tips. This is a good community, so take advantage of that. :-)

    2) Save up some of that money that you spend and get Killy or whatever crew comes along next who is helpful in ship battles (if skirmishes and arena are your passions). I spent $25 on her because I like the character. It really helped in this past skirmish.

You're probably on a good path to keep building. Glad to see you active on the forum. This is just as good a place for info as a good fleet.

  • I haven't changed my approach and get the same results. Ship battles were always boring and remain so. Especially in Skirmishes. Any 5* ship works as well as the next.
