That is precisely why it is important to check stats on that gold crew you just got. If it is a point of collecting and/or you really want that one, leave it at level 10 until you get a couple more to fuse with it.
Chang is a good example, I almost airlocked him myself, but I really like him and fortunately I got a second copy within a few weeks of the first. He is definitely not the strongest, but a fun reminder of Shakespeare as told "in the original Klingon".
I like Chang, knew his stats weren't great, but I leveled him anyway. Then I got tight on crew slots again and decided to get ruthless. Chang would understand @Kaitee he battled it out with a few copies of Worf true warrior style but unfortunately lost. It was an honourable death. I sent an email to his family detailing every blow and parry. They will mourn him as a true warrior.
Wow. I cannot believe anyone would seriously toss out a 5*! (Not counting duplicates). And the amount of people who airlocked people that they won in events is...perplexing. Why waste resources and deny others who could use the top 1k character when you are just going to airlock them anyway?

I generally don't go for gold unless I want it. I don't have enough space (Hence poor Chang). The only time I do is in skirmishes because I am obsessed about getting lots of honor from the rewards. I run a very strategic ship, I don't have a lot of money and therefore crew space is at a premium. Most of my efforts are towards collecting super-rare crew and golds I only keep if they have value (or perceived value).
I currently have 34 golds, and I have immortalized 280+ crew. That's how I do my thing, but everyone plays a bit differently.

Do you do this just to stop other players from reaching the top 1000?
Oooohhh... the irony here is enough to write a Shakespearean play. But I will let that sleeping dog lie... sit Banjo - good dog.
I didn't win Chang from an event. As explained above, I don't compete for rank when I don't want the gold. Where's the irony in that?
Regardless of whether you won Chang in an event or not is irrelevant as you had to explain yourself and justify your actions to an accuser... for basically a similar thing that I ended up spending all that text explaining what I am up to.
The other comment is basically saying the same thing about tossing 5* out airlocks, accusing you (and others) of waste and denying others a chance to gain a character...
Now I actually don’t toss 5* out airlocks (yet); I merely haven’t got around to FE all of them yet (now down to an even dozen). But I really don’t mind or care if others do... Nor do I feel guilty when 90% of my SR 4* and 100% of 1-3* automatically go into the cold hard vacuum of space.
I have nothing to add as I feel you and everyone else should be free to play any way you want including spending a lot of money - or not. Airlock - or not. Up to you without a bunch of judgement that you’re doing if for malicious reasons. And even if it was for evil spiteful reasons, what the heck, it’s only a game.
I have more than enough crew space to hang on to Golds in the hope that I can get extra stars for them. When that position changes, Ill start kicking the more useless golds out (starting with Fugly Sato).
Ultimately this game is about collecting cards, and part of the OCD in me wants to collect and immortalize them all.
Alas, my pockets aren't deep enough so I am content keeping the golds I have 1/5 unlevelled unless they are event crew. The good thing about the new reward tructures (i.e. for the following event) has made me more keen to level the crew I win.

I have two in the relegation zone
Pah Wraith Dukat (my only gold from a merit pull but not great stats)
Admiral Cartwright (damn you for dropping instead of Nechayev in the Starfleet brass pack and again 1/5 stats not great).
But I would still airlock a purple before a gold.

I was genuinely curious as to why you kept all the golds without leveling them. I find most of my golds useful in some way, even at 1/5 where they can often replace a 4/4 who can then go into cryo.
Deepest apologies if you thought I was being judgemental or you thought I was suggesting you were malicious. From your previous posts I would say that was extremely unlikely.

No problem. It actually wasn’t you but I think someone’s follow up post moved it into the realm of being serious... we’re good. I just thought it was humorous that someone basically accused you of the same thing.
I realized something when an unexpected Gold came up yesterday. I started going through my FF/FE purples, and started ticking off who I could freeze. There are a LOT more than I realized since my Gold crew has grown to the point I have all Gold crew enough for Voyages and shuttle missions. The purples may have similar stats as many of the Gold are still at 1/5 – 3/5, but the Gold have far better Crit spread.
So...when my 6th Caretaker popped up in my Gauntlet rewards, I almost airlocked him, then went through the purples, and though better of it. My first Gold duplicate, hopefully not my last!
I wwnt through my crew yesterday, decided to only hold on to the top 21 in each category, plus a few gauntlet exceptions. Suddenly Inhave 12 open crew slots! I still wish the crew were really sortable in the vault.
I've airlocked four golds, all because I was desperate for space.
Captain Pike - got him from a merit pull, sat on my roster for ages at 1*, was desperate for space, useless at 1/5, so out he went.
Protomorphosis Barclay - Got assigned as squad captain for the event, and the rest of my squad bumped me up into the 1K range. I hate spiders, artwork was terrifying, stats weren't impressive, so out he went.
Reverend Phlox - Didn't mean to make Top 1000, but it was a skirmish event, and I kept sinking all my chrons into ship battles for more tickets. I've got far too many DIP/MED gauntlet characters.
Minuet - sticking to my guns, she's useless, I'm not going to waste honor to FF and freeze her, or wait however many months it will take to hope for her in a behold. I'll finish the mega just fine without her.

Spider Barclay is 1000% worth citing to 5/5*. He is my #2 base and combined SCI (after Surak), my #2 base ENG (after Ru’afo), my #6 combined ENG (after Ru’afo, 3/5* Caretaker, RAF O’Brien, 1/5* Tempted Data, and 2/5* La Borge), and my #1 ENG/SCI combo (with only Mirror Cochrane anywhere close and the 3/5* Caretaker a very distant third). He and Mirror Cochrane are the reason why ENG/SCI went from one of my worst voyage skill combos to my best.
I would say you done messed up good, arachnophobia aside. And I feel the same way about getting wigged out by spiders...I just don’t think it’s worth missing out on one of the better crew in the entire game.

It's incredibly hard to FF gold through portal pulls there are so many of them and they are rare to drop.
The best I got is 3/5 Mobile Doctor.
I was joking @Paund Skumm.

Brocolli and Phlox are two of my most used crew
Broccoli is on a lot of my voyages. I wish I’d gone for Phlox as good MED/CMD is hard to come by.
To each their own though. I’m sure people would think some things I’ve done are just crazy.
I hear ya. Some things I’ve done game wise seem to be straight up blasphemy.
