When to spend money? (New reward structure)

Prime LorcaPrime Lorca ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I'm kind of planning to spend money. But do I do it next event in hopes of placing in top 1,000 to get Captain Spock or wait until next week and hope to get Spock in a pack?

I don't have many Spock's in my crew, so it's kind of a major goal to get the next new one.

The next event is faction. In order to do well in a typical faction event, you need 1) a very deep crew; 2) a whole bunch of time reducers; and 3) willingness and ability to keep careful track of time. In this coming event, you will have an even harder time since this is a very desired crew (and most people are hoping it will also be an unusually superior crew). This event will be brutal. If you don't have all 3 of the above and a good bit of luck, you don't have a chance during the event. This is the sad, sorry truth. I've been doubling every Thursday cadet mission for the past several weeks, then buying more and doubling those. I definitely have 2 and 3 from above, but am not certain of 1. I have a fair chunk of the 4* event crew, but none of the 5*. I'll go for it, but the odds are not in my favor.

May the odds ever be in your favor.

There's "doing well" and then there's "doing well enough to land in the top 1000" — and it sounds like the latter is your goal. It doesn't necessarily come down to spending money. Even though, as David says, it's bound to be competitive next week with many folks interested in Spock, I think you've got a chance to get a copy of him if you're willing to put in the time. By that I mean, setting your alarm for every 3 hours overnight so you can get more VP than the folks who are just using the 9-hour boosts (won't necessarily be required for a sub-1000 finish, but it sure helps). In addition, you'll need to have a good stock of speed-up boosts (as mentioned above in point #2). And make sure you're getting a good head start by doing the kickstart right away. Plus, it never hurts to be a squadron leader (if you're not a squad leader, maybe ask if you can take over just for the weekend — so long as you've got a good crew to share).

Speaking of which, are you thinking you'll get top 1000 this weekend and get a 5* Weyoun? That would no doubt be a big plus in doing well next weekend. Not to mention if you've got Commando Shran and a fair sprinkling of Dominion and Andorian crew.

Now, it could be you know all that stuff, and are just asking for opinions about which option is better to spend your money on. Getting a Spock in the event pack where he's offered could take 10 pulls or even more (or you could get him on your first pull). But figure that amount of Dilithium spent and the dollar cost of that, versus how much you'd potentially spend buying boost packs (or speeding up shuttles with Dilithium during the event, if you plan on doing that). Then again, sometimes the best deal might be buying that crew outright for the $49.99 (and possibly getting another star on them in the accompanying event packs).

Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

Thanks for the input. I didn't have the chronitons to get Weyoun this week. I will most likely not have the best crew to share, so probably not the squad leader. I was only planning on the $25 event deal. It sounds like my best odds are to do my best on the event and try my luck on the pack during the event where Spock is event crew.

I've got a bit of depth on Dominion crew and 3/4 Expedition Shran. My Squadron usually has a strong share. Maybe I'll get lucky with either the event or the packs. The likely bloodbath during the event kind of discourages me from putting too many eggs in that basket.

    Thanks again, all!

What do you usually rank? If you've never ranked below 1k, then you're probably not going to rank for Spock. If you know you can rank with effort, then make the effort to get him.

I ranked in top 1k during each week of the last mega event, but rarely make it outside of mega events and skirmishes. The possibility is open in faction events, but the Spock event is a bit intimidating. I've noticed a fair amount of enthusiasm on the forum. Also not sure if my boost reserves will get the job done.

Sounds like you're right on the cusp - which means you have no reason to be intimidated. Yes, there is enthusiasm, but 4 day faction events have a lot of moving parts - not the least of which is real life. My best advice is to try to keep on schedule (i.e., limit the gaps between shuttle completion and send-outs). Nothing is more damaging to your rank than having shuttles sitting idle for several hours. (OK, I suppose 0/4 RNG outcomes are potentially more damaging, but let's just assume that won't happen.)

I say go for it (w/o spending) and see if you can earn him from the faction event. If not, you can always spend on packs/offers during his actual event.

It will be interesting to see how the new shuttle requisitions affect the leader board. Cynical cash grab, or master stroke releasing spock? You decide..

If I remember well, I had my first top 1000 rank in the Emperor Georgiou event, which was a faction event. I wasn't ready for it and I had almost no decent bonus crew, but I really really wanted the character, so I spent some money on it and tried anyway. This is what I did:

    - bought 2 of the premium boosts offers (back then there was no double reward thing for Thursday challenges)
    - bought the 8 euro event offer
    - used all of my honor to get as many stars as possible on my event crew (so I had two Festive Lwaxanas (one immortal and one FE) and one immortal Detective Dixon Hill)
    - only slept 6 hours a night

I ranked better than I had expected (maybe somewhere around 300 (?), I don't remember) but back then there were no double reward options for Thursday's shuttle boosts, there was no this week's ranked reward is next week's event crew thing and there was not rent-a-shuttle feature, so I don't know how much harder it has become to rank now.

My advice would be to have decent to good shuttle crew and if you don't have many bonus characters, then it's best to have at least both featured 4* immortal by the beginning of the event and possibly a double copy of one of them. It will allow you to put two exact event characters in your time boost shuttle, which will give it better success chances.

I forgot about the upcoming shuttle rental! Holy carp! That's going to throw things off. I've got 4 shuttles and some depth, but not enough for a fifth shuttle. I don't think the rental thing will help me at all. I don't think it will hurt either. That will probably have bigger impact on the top 200.

@Emperor Borg Drone , you have some great ideas. I don't think I'll be able to get the extra event crew without spending. I only sleep 6 hours a night, but that's my norm, not because of the game. Although the first thing I do in the morning is my dailies. I think this coming Thursday I will spend the extra 150 dilithium to double my boosts. (Quadruple, if you count ad warps.)

    Thanks again for the advice!

  • @[10F] Prime Lorca No problem, I hope you'll make it into the 1k and get Spock! :)

I forgot to write that I also used up all of my dilithium, but I didn't have much left because I had spent most of it on very unlucky pulls from the previous week's Tuesday pack. So maybe one more event pack and one or two extra cadet rounds for boosts?
Anyway, I used all the resources I had and invested as much money as I was comfortable with (not much :D ) and I made it, so unless the changes to events have a huge impact on ranks, I think you should make it too :)
  • I spent all my time boosts in last weeks event and I was doing pretty well (in top 500) for most of the event. I logged in about an hour before the event ended and was around 800 so I worked away until I was back up around the 600 mark, then went to bed (4am start and finishes for events in my part of the world) with half an hour to go. I woke up in the morning and had dropped to 1111 place during that half hour. I couldn't believe it.
Anyway, I spent NO money on that event and will spend NO money on this next one and I'll probably only play for thresholds anyway because it's too big a TIME investment to rank >1000. I'll roll on a couple of packs if I save my daily dilithium up.
I don't plan on spending any more real money on this game beyond a monthly card.

Haha yeah I missed this. My first reaction to the Capt Spock announcement was - yeah the new shuttle hire scheme is bound to bomb on it's release (why do they beta test on us?) and then DB will have to give us all a Capt Spock as compensation. Hope it pans out that way.

It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings if everyone got Captain Spock. That's a bigger incentive for top 1k. A 2/5 Spock would be even better.

I just realized that there is an all day work meeting that day. I'll be getting a late start. That's very unfortunate for me. Then one of my brothers will be coming to town for the week of Thanksgiving (here in the States). Looks like that time factor is going to be working against me.

  • I'm not sounding at all. I refuse after the Captain's Oath debacle. The Captain Spock sounds like a lure to get people to open their wallets back up. Sorry not going to happen.

I've been debating whether to throw merits at thawing bonus crew and then making the big push to get Capt Spock.

As much as I would like to get in on this score, I think I'll be happy with my Weyoun 5 as a much needed DS9 addition to my collection and see how this event plays out. Just too many unknowns at this point.
