This is the version of wes from the episode that he was a pilot with nova squadron at the academy. the fact that the student pilots are central to the episode's plot he should probably be granted the trait....

When we add this trait to a crew it is in reference to their skills and proven abilities as a pilot.
Someone who is good enough to make an elite squadron and a character that was involved in an episode based on an accident that the squadron was involved with probably should be a pilot.
Especially when Sito from the same episode has the trait.
I generally agree with keeping the focus of traits narrow to avoid the trait being so common it is essentially meaningless, but in this case, because of the episode he represents, and especially given that the other character from the same group also has the trait, he really should too.
You mean like being one of five members of an elite squadron of pilots that won the Rigel Cup, a feat so impressive that it triggered a celebration among their peers at Starfleet Academy that “made the parrises squares championship celebration of 2324 look like a dinner party“?

You mean like the helmsman of the Enterprise-D and a member of the elite Nova Squadron?
if anything that makes a case that most versions of wes should get the pilot trait since he was piloting the enterprise or shuttlecraft in many of his appearances after becoming acting ensign. (not 1* and probably not lt. wes)
furthermore, this is not the standard applied to the following cards:
RAF Miles
RAF Julian
Scarf Yar
Jetboots Spock
and possibly: 2* la forge, 2* tucker, and arex
and as was mentioned by others, cadet sito from the same episode got the same pilot training as cadet wes, but did not serve as a pilot after getting her commission (other than an escape pod off-screen.)
It's simple. The people who created Cadet Sito actually watched the episode the character comes from. Or at least checked Memory Alpha. The people who created Cadet Wesley didn't.

I am not sure if Tom mentioned getting his skills from his dad. But as you say we never really saw him as a pilot.
Whereas Cadet Wes was part of an elite squadron (if we ever get proto-Paris from the episode we woild expect him to be a pilot)
Takes the helm of a vessel called Enterprise on numerous occasions in the series.
Member of elite fly squadron at the academy. One of the highest honours for a cadet at Starfleet.
And you gave one version of Wesley +9 evasion which is very high for a super rare character. Was that just random or based on their skills and proven abilities as a pilot?
Annoyingly gifted as Wes is, being a pilot is central to his traits.
