Greetings Captains,
As announced in our v8.0.0 client release notes a new feature is coming to Star Trek Timelines, Crew Retrieval. The design of Crew Retrieval involved taking into account many other aspects of the game, crew traits being one of them.
Dev commentary:
We have audited crew traits and are adding, removing and deprecating traits on existing crew to improve crew value. We have also revisited our internal guidelines for assigning traits to upcoming crew.
With an imminent feature where crew traits will be very important, we were able to dedicate the time to listen to the feedback and apply improvements that our team has hoped to make for a long time! We’re excited to finally share the upcoming changes and are eager to hear feedback.
Traits are an important and unique attribute of crew in Star Trek Timelines, but throughout the hundreds of crew that have been created, there is room for improvement. Our vision of how traits apply to gameplay, as well as the invaluable recommendations from thousands of players who participated in passionate discussions, led us to these improvements. Traits will continue to be an important attribute of crew and exciting upcoming features and content will leverage these changes.
Our goals were to apply trait changes as authentically and consistently as possible; adding value where possible and reducing the amount of low value traits. Traits will undoubtedly continue to evolve and we will continue to iterate with team and player feedback.
We would like to thank the community who participated in discussions on social media and forums about crew traits. These discussions were invaluable to our team in making decisions and highlighting areas of improvement. We hope that the community continues to help us improve crew traits and will be listening for future feedback.
The changes listed below are scheduled to go live with our February 2 server update.

Upcoming traits changes
The traits that are part of these changes no longer served their game mechanics purpose, either due to a trait not being shared by enough crew, or having too much overlap with other traits.
- “Astronomer” has been removed and replaced with “Astrophysics”.
While we understand there is a difference between these two fields of study we felt there was enough overlap to combine the two.
Crew affected by this change: Miss Q and Rain Robinson.
- “Empress” has been removed and replaced with “Royalty”.
All Terran Empire rulers will now have the Royalty trait.
Crew affected by this change: Emperor Philippa Georgiou, Section 31 Philippa Georgiou, and Mirror Empress Sato.
- “Lord” removed
This has been a mostly abandoned trait with little utility beside context for the crew that had it. However it didn’t have a strong definition and will be removed.
Crew affected: Commander Kruge, Grand Nagus Zek, and The One, Lore
- “Torchbearer” removed
When we came up with this trait we had limited information regarding Star Trek Discovery and thought that Torchbearer was going to be more prevalent. After evaluating this trait we decided that “Cultural Figure” is an appropriate replacement. Crew that had the “Torchbearer” trait will now have the “Cultural Figure'' trait if they didn’t already have it.
Crew affected: Torchbearer Rejac, Torchbearer Tyler, and Torchbearer Voq
- “Spy” removed
The trait that snuck back in! It wasn’t supposed to get back into the game, and as a result it will be replaced by “Undercover Operative”.
Crew affected: Amelia Earhart, Brigitte Torres, Control Leland, Covert Operative Leland, Romulan Kirk, as well as Agent Janeway
- “Warrior” removed
Another trait that snuck back into the game and will be removed from Laneth.
- “Chancellor”, “President”, as well as “Senator” will be consolidated with the use of ”Politician”. The “Politician” trait being defined as: a person who is professionally involved in politics, especially as a holder of, or a candidate for, an elected office.
Crew affected: Chancellor Gorko, Chancellor Gowron, Chancellor L'Rell, Chancellor Martok, General Martok, Abraham Lincoln, The President of Earth, UFP President Ra-ghoratreii, and Senator Vreenak
