Crew Voice Clips?

Shy KhanShy Khan ✭✭✭✭✭
Was this game feature abandoned at some point? I remember talking to a DB rep about the clips at Star Trek Mission New York back in fall of 2016 and they mentioned the main difficulty was finding isolated clips without music or extra sound in the background. Which seemed a little bit odd, but I took them at their word.

I've actually just had my sound off completely for a while, but just turned it back on to see if any new clips had been introduced since then, or if new characters had audio, and it seems there haven't been. And those few characters that do have existing clips don't seem to have them associated with all versions. Was just curious if there had been an announcement regarding the clip development? I see people suggesting clips all the time.

The sound environment is something they seem to push as a selling point of the game - so much so that the game disrupts whatever podcast/music I'm listening to when I open the app, even when I have game sounds turned off - yet I don't notice the development. Thoughts? Updates?

Vreenak was added with his famous line "It's a faaaaake"
  • Vreenak is the only recent one, I think the last before that was probably Not A Merry Worf - its not very good really is it when you think of the wealth of voice material out there that DB stated was all available to them previously.
No wonder most of us play on mute

  • I'm assuming that securing the royalties to use an actor's voice makes this complicated. It is probably completely separate from just showing the actor's likeness on a card.

But I don't work here, and the existing clips are mostly so annoyingly repetitive to me that I keep the sound off all the time anyway.

At the beginning I was a huge fan of the voice clips and wished every character could get some lines. But over times almost all of them are very annoying, no bloody a, b, c or d. Even if they were great in the first place. If my whole roaster had these clips it would be very painfull to play the game. If they are ever going to add more clips they have to make it optional.

Well, I certainly think they should have three separate volume sliders, for Music, FX, and Voices. I love the TNG theme, but I don’t need to hear it repeatedly as I’m grinding for equipment.

This exactly. A 'frequency' setting for how often the clips trigger would be excellent too.

I would love if we could choose themes. I would even pay for DS9 theme or Archer's theme (enterprise outro)

It’s something we looked into, but it would require splitting out the different sounds/music into separate distinct tracks and then getting the game to recognize it. For whatever reasons, when the game was originally developed, it was configured for a single audio track.

So we recognize the quality of life value, but it not something that will appear in the game.

As for the OP’s question, audio clips are generally done on a case by case basis due to a variety of factors. Aside from the logistics, there’s also the fact that not every player appreciates them.

However, that doesn’t means there won’t be any more audio clips in the future, it just means we’ll be more judicious in when they’re incorporated.

I'm confused, was Star Trek Timelines not developed in-house at Disruptor Beam? Is DB only able to update story and character content, and minor UI updates? I'm not a programmer, so I don't quite understand the implications of it being "configured for a single audio track." Was this a third party game app template of some sort?

Also 1* tuvok isn't yet a Lieutenant Commander but says "Lt Cmdr Tuvok reporting for duty."

Would love more clips that match the character version and the ability to set a frequency or maybe a certain clip only plays for specific nodes, like only if the character matches a node trait or something; or for activation of a ship ability etc.

    What does the Phlox say?!?!
    Ring-ding-ding-ding-ding.
  • This game has sound? Hm. I think I remember... it's been so long.

I've had my sound off forever too but I did like those audio clips.
  • I want them to be added to more crew members. My first officer is unusually quiet...

DB should have an optional sound package app for $0.99 (who am I kidding?) with extra sound clips for those who want them.

+1- I always wondered why there isn't adjust sliders in this game as with many others. The main reason I have my sound off is the 'rumbling' sound in the background, especially when your wearing headphones. Give you a headache after a while.
Another great feature would to be able to have the option to turn on/off some of the voice clip for each character. Scotty is still rambling on after I've made my choice, that bloody A, B, C, is just too long.
I am bummed about the new Q not having "You hit me!" or, and I love this, from "All Good Things" when Picard figures out he caused the anomaly and Q says "Congratulations."

They would make much more by charging to NOT have sound.

I generally enjoy the sound clips and wish there were more of them. Mariachi Q is definitely lacking.

Except for Scotty. For the love of all that's holy either speed up that clip or get rid of it entirely...

Just because it was done in house doesn't mean that it was done by people that are still there. And even if they were, it sounds like a bad judgement call was made early on and that it would take a large effort to rectify it..

Since so many of us play with the sound off, I can see why it wouldn't be a priority.

Agreed. I deliberately never use Scotty for anything because of that.

I don't like any sound to play on my phone really, like texts or phone ringing, so I keep my phone off for that mostly. I'm rather misophonic, to the level I even rarely listen to music. The only sounds I really like are constant background sounds like a fan blowing.

On occasion I do turn the sound on on my phone, but not for this game - it's too annoying. The only game I really turn my sound on for is my Harry Potter game because it has soothing background music and isn't making beeps or voice lines at me on the constant like this game does. So the voice clips in this game, honestly hold no value for me.

Fun fact: The ships are propelled by bouncy castle technology.
  • I play with sound on about half the time, and when I do, I really enjoy the voice clips, (except that annoyingly long one from Scotty). It's frustrating that they are so rarely added anymore, and so inconsistent. It does feel like DB has just given up on that component of the game. I'm still miffed about the ones they actually removed from the game, too. What was the point of that?

I usually play with the sound off as to not bother others, unless I'm using headphones. Then the sounds in this game are always off. I find no particular enjoyment of the sound clips I've heard, but I've also heard exceedingly few as the background noise and beeps and UI interactions are extremely annoying.

Do you have one of the crew that has a sound clip such as Merry Men Worf, Rifle Janeway, Scotty, 2* Worf, Sniper Ezri, etc etc)? The voices play on my android phone, and with the large audience of iOS users I'm sure they play for them too.

I have Rifle Janeway, Sniper Ezri and 2* Worf for example, and nothing.
  • I love the sound clips and I think DB could certainly afford to add more of them with the option to turn them off. Except for Scotty, just terrible.
