H.M.S. Bounty traits

There are some of us that believe that the H.M.S. Bounty should have the trait of Klingon added to it. It is, after all, a Klingon Bird of Prey. Presumably, it was designed, and built, by Klingons with Klingon parts. It does have the Federation trait, even though it was simply commandeered by a Federation crew, had the name painted on the side, and, presumably, the name was changed in the ship's log computer, and/or registry. It should be like any number of crew members that were surgically, and/or cosmetically, altered for different missions. They have the traits of both their original species and the species they were altered to impersonate.

  • If DB were to ever actually address this issue, I think they’d be wise to just go ahead and give it both the Klingon and Federation traits. It’s a Klingon ship, yes, but it was captured by the Federation and basically made into the Enterprise bridge crew’s ship, for months, at least. And they didn’t give it back or anything. They crashed it into San Francisco Bay where it sank and presumably still sits.

I suppose someone in the expanded universe could have done something about that, one way or the other. Maybe fish it out and give it back to the Klingons or even better, continue to let everyone think it sank and is still at the bottom of the Bay, but secretly recover and repair it and use it for covert Federation missions.

Ship traits are different than crew traits. A 5* ship has 3 traits - one political (ship's colors), one ship class/function, one descriptive or distinguishing property. The only likely way for the Bounty to gain Klingon is to lose Federation.

By the time it became the Bounty I believe that Scotty mentioned he had to do a great deal of work on the ship to get it to interface with Federation computer systems. Which makes it sound like it is more Federation than Klingon

There is one and only one exception to the three-trait rule for 5* ships:

This is an admittedly weak precedent but suggests that political affiliation can be separated from the manufacturer/operator.

Well, that changes things. Wasn't aware of that.

Though Federation is the political allegiance and Andorian is the species that built it and used it. It was being run by Andorians.

Kind of like how crew have a political allegiance trait and a species trait. -shrug- Sometimes they are the same trait, as would be the case with a ship being run by a crew made up of multiple species with a common political allegiance.

I didn’t know it either until I got curious about ship stats the other day and saw that the text in the trait list for the Kumari was longer than most other 5* ships. I had to double check yesterday to make sure two-word traits like War Veteran weren’t playing tricks on me.

The NX-01 has the "Federation" trait, but it was a United Earth ship. Somehow the U.S.S. Discovery is "Ruthless." There's lots of issues here.

  • The name of the game is 'Inconsistency'.

As the Borg Queen doesn't have the 'villain' trait I'm surprised the Bounty is not both Fed and Kdf but we find this kind of inconsistency throughout the game.

I hope they can look on these details someday and make a better trait classification system to ships and crew.

I think their thinking is that Lorca makes the ship Ruthless. Weird, yes but that’s really the only way to explain that one.

Oh, and I’m guessing they don’t yet have a Starfleet trait for ships so just went with Federation for the NX.

Well, as I think about it, there's another problem: The Kumari was destroyed before the Federation ever existed. So it was never a Federation starship.

The Kumari is not a Federation ship, it was pre-charta era.
