How is rank determined between people with equal points?

How is rank determined between people with equal points in events? Im just under an awards tier but people with the same amount of points are in the next tier up. And its for a new 5 star character that i don't have?

If your in that scenario at the end of the event, with a few seconds left, screen cap it for security and mail CS if you don't get your just reward
