Well, it was nice while it lasted. Won’t be going to Discord, it’s hard for me to follow what’s current and I’m not interested in taking the time to learn for this time sink of a game.
Hate to say it, but if this is the end of the Forum, what more fitting way could there be than for them to completely ignore us on here about it shutting down...
The final legacy of this place will be the constant radio silence from the Devs it seems. How apropos

You know how in “Field of Dreams” they say “build it and they will come”? Here it’s the opposite, “ignore them and they’ll go away”.
Well, this just seals it.
For 10 years, I've been looking for a reason.
Now, the powers that be have taken the need from me, and made the decision on my behalf.
OK, I've clearly un-retired from the forums about as fast as I retire from in-game.
Let's all air our dirty laundry.
I'd like to see some of the various "GuestXXXXXXXX" accounts come clean and admit who they actually were. Or if you were two named forum posters all along, confess your sin.
I'll start.
I was secretly always Princess Trista.
Discord is an awful way to impart information, imo. I also just hate Discord in general. (I had to use it for a recent job I did, and while one-to-one conversation was a simple matter, there were many 'announcements' which just got lost.)
So, needless to say, I also won't be going to Discord if the forums kick the bucket. And losing the forums may very well limit how much longer I play Timelines. I have spent a lot of money on this game, and have played for many years, but a change like this could bring all of that to an end much sooner.

I have been no one else but me, but suddenly feel sad that I couldn't have been King Frank or some such.

Except I did the opposite. The more they would ignore something or someone, the more that I would bring attention to it. I became notorious for it.
I was also notorious for once being one of the most positive and forgiving voices on these forums. I tried to see the best in things, even when others instantly honed on the negative. It got to the point that some thought I was working for the company.
The fact that they have poisoned the well so much that I am now one of the most critical voices on here should say something. They burned through all the good will I could muster. And then some. This might be the final straw.
Fitting we only finally got official confirmation a few days before they shut down. I'm honestly surprised we got that much.
For those who will continue, let this not silence these discussions about the game, or Trek in general. Let them just find a new, pardon the pun, forum for those conversations.
To those I've met here along the way, I hope to see you out there still. Let the spirit of this place continue elsewhere, like Reddit. The passion that was displayed on these forums for this game was something to cherish.
This should speak volumes about how these forums (and the game) have crumbled IMO. I once was heavily involved in both, and just now realised how long it had been since I checked a popular thread on here that I started
It's been a death spiral since @Shan left. That was the beginning of the end. We just didn't know it yet.
To paraphrase T.S. Eliot:
This is the way the (forum) ends
Not with a bang but a whimper
What you are describing is the life cycle of every player. Staunch support to endless criticism. I've been through it myself. And they have been through it for every player in the game who speaks up. That good will going away is just diminishing returns and player boredom. It's not like the game is worse now that it was at many times in the past.
There's way more to do, but you don't have to do any of it to proceed, so you can just pick your pace.
There's more event variety even if the newer events aren't great. Again, you don't have to do 'em and if you do anyway because you just have to have that crew member, ranking in any event these days isn't that hard. (And I say this is as someone who loathes Voyage and Speciality events. Voyages because the first 2 hours require too much attention at a specific time and Speciality because it's just a chron auction.)
Despite the ever falling population the amount of development the game is getting this late in its lifecycle is genuinely great.
Any player who leaves because the forum is closing down is already a dead leaf being shaken loose by inclement weather. Again, I am sad to see it go, I have paid attention to it for 6 of the last 8 years. But it just became a place where cranky old men screamed into the void (or at times at each other).
I am on their official discord, my fleet uses it already and I had joined the CAB server too. I do check in with my fleet regularly for doing FBBs etc, so it's easy to check in on the official STT server if something is going awry, but it won't replace this forum.

I'll simply say this, as there is little point in wasting any more energy on something that will be gone in two days. This is about far more than what you're describing.
The shut down of the Forum with little notice is a symptom of a bigger sickness with the game itself. The Devs don't care about what players want or think. It's been evident for a long time.
Don't be surprised when one day the game is shut down with just as much notice as the forums were.
I'm surprised the game is still here, so don't worry I won't be shocked when the game inevitably dies.
Edited to add: It's possible that the reason that the game still exists at all is because of cost cutting that has led to this current state of affairs. The game will only continue to exist at all as long as it remains profitable by some metric, and as the population has fallen I think it's fair to assume that revenues have fallen too, so seeing a degradation in non-core aspects to the game seems to me to be the kind of tradeoff that customers hate but might be the secret ingredient for the longevity of the game. I don't have any special insight so I am not asserting that this is definitely true, but I also wouldn't be shocked if it was.
