Tried earlier today, same problem. Decided to contact support.
I forgot on my other accounts to examine containers before running misssions.
I am starting to suspect that the containers is a problem.
Btw, if this is the cause. Make sure not to have your game open when the new missions activate. I had my game up at 11:00 pm cdt, the missions were not yet available. I went to my other accounts and was running missions on my other accounts, when I came back to my game on the game having problems.

It's gotten to the point where we should all expect events to have issues the last 30-60 minutes, especially for galaxy and skirmish events. It's not good and definitely not on the players, but it's such a regular occurrence that waiting until the last minute to make a push for rank does seem like a foolish strategy at this point. Fool us once, shame on the game... fool us twice (or every galaxy/skirmish event), shame on us!

I may blow the historical storytelling aspect of this a bit, so someone w/ better memory can correct details...
When skirmishes were introduced, there were no auto/speed buttons. Every battle had to be run manually. During those early days, Paladin hit 10M VP to win an event - an unfathomable number at the time - and crushed everyone else in the process. Today, with auto/speed, the skirmish winner routinely scores in the 25M VP range. Automaton once played a skirmish at elite (not epic) and still finished in the top 100 (presumably just to see if he could). Making skirmish "less clicky" doesn't lead to playing less... we just score more points because it's easier to do so.
(I do agree about the reduced physical strain that Scott mentioned - despite the "joys" of aging, auto/speed has allowed me to keep playing my favorite event type competitively without completely destroying my hand/wrist.)
