How often fo you "punt" on an event?

LeadHeadLeadHead ✭✭
edited November 2017 in The Bridge
We're now over a year with an event every single weekend in Star Trek Timelines. I've been finding them less and less accessible as time goes on. Where I could get into the top 1000 with a dedication and some boosting, now I'm lucky to make the top 2000, making events less useful. If I'm just going to end up with a 2/4, that's another crew slot taken by someone I can't immortalize.

So I'm "punting" more often, and not paying the full event. Usually getting useful materials or items, maybe staying in long enough for the community rewards to unlock. (I know I don't need to go full effort in an event to get the community rewards, but I try to do my part)

Are you playing the full event or are you leaving it early?

    I finish almost all events.
I literally only played this event to give me the inspiration to immortalize Winn and Brahms and farm Bajoran items for Bareil who is a pain to level. I used to play faction seriously but there's no point until I get my fourth shuttle and have some decent event crew. I had appalling RNG too so the farming was very difficult and it shouldn't have been that bad.

I'll do galaxy or hybrid events but faction events are just frustrating atm. Voyages are my daily 'event' - relatively cheap, almost guaranteed a 4* if I spend a bit of dilithium, I get chrons and honor and I find them more rewarding than simply sending out shuttles on a timer and watching them fail too often.
  • My answer to this is "it depends". I always play faction events, and have come to terms with the higher than expected failure rate being due to incorrectly displayed success rates that seem to be caused by s being improperly inflated when boosts are applied, where one or more of the crew in the slots with skills affected by the boost don't actually have the skill being boosted. By playing around this, the actual success rate now is more in line with expectations. It helps that the current and last event matched up well with my crew, and applying the kickstart is absolutely key.

As for galaxy events, they are a waste of chrons and resources once you play past a certain point, and I tend to throttle down once I hit that point. I may play on if I want the character included in the threshold or ranked rewards, but it is event specific. I also tend to put more effort into it if if it's a hybrid event.

As for expeditions, it's been nearly a year since the last full blown expedition that I participated in, so I have no comment on them, except to say that my recollection of that one event was that it was tedious, and not a whole lot of fun. Especially when you critted the mission, and the rare reward didn't drop. Uhhh...

I play all the events, faction events are the easiest but I don't always get the gold character. This event for example is for another 1/5* fringe character has no use to me! I have not bothered using boosts and am around the 1200 mark. Sure I could easily win the gold if I used boosts and bothered to taylor the missions I take on to my crew, but i'm just not into this event.

Next week, another dead Klingon again so one not to bother with, I cant imagine hes going to appear again and is instantly forgetable as a character. I'll get all the threshold rewards then spend chronos on leveling my crew.

I have 50 golds, 24 of which are un-leveled as they are 1/5 or 2/5* so completely useless! I would airlock the majority of them but its just not worth the 650 honour so they can clog up DBs servers

Ill play most of the faction missions to the last threshold if i get the reward crew in the first pack. Otherwise if im not crazy about the crew, i just toss him out the airlock. Galaxy ill usuallu try for the FF 4* but if not, then i stop after the easy chron rewards. Expedition I avoid like the plague as i find them tedious.

Faction - Ghost in the Machine rerun was first that I throttled back on, just wanting to finish Lore and saving my effort for 5* that are more appealing. I should have put in a little more effort though.. as things stand now I'm going to miss out on that last pile of merits in the thresholds.

Galaxy - Been stopping after the thresholds for a while now

Expedition - I miss them so much, but I doubt I'll go all out on them again unless the top prize is an upgrade for an existing 5* or a new one I really want.

I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
Lately I've been playing just to the 150k prize on the threshold - in galaxy events 1000 merits at 250k just doesn't seem like enough incentive to keep building items over and over and over and over until I start to wonder if I've done this enough times for Data to start dealing all threes, and in faction events I generally reach the 150k item on the last afternoon, so it's neither here nor there (I forget what happened last time there was an expedition).

I have played a galaxy all-in - three thousand chronitons to get through when phase 2 kicked in at 2am local time... but it was for Commander Kira, so nevertheless she persisted. Honestly though, I'm not doing that again - I take my chances with the 2x4* deals at the tail end of events and the 5 packs that come with them, and if none of them turn up gold, it's not the end of the world. So far it's worked more often than not, and the legendaries I've missed out on aren't keeping me up at night.
  • i have different goals every weekend. i may go 'all out' if i like the event crew, or i may take the chrons from threshold and run. real life also plays a factor in my goals because if i'm traveling or i have some plans over the weekend, i may not try as hard.

Usually its a 'life' decision for me. I've got a toddler at home, and if I have time when she's sleeping, then I usually go full out. I've tanked on occasion if the character not only doesn't interest me but actively annoys me.

The poll needs more options based on types. I finish all faction events. For hybrid faction/galaxy I play through the threshold and stop. For pure galaxy events I tend to play every other event to the end and skip the others(except for a token recipe to get community rewards).

I play all Faction until the end, mostly because I run shuttles every few hours whether or not an event is running. I tend to do well enough to walk away with a 4/4 from the Ranks, so the little bit of extra effort doesn't feel wasted. These latest two I've even gotten the 1/5*.

I play Galaxy to the point of getting every Threshold reward, because I'm able to justify that internally as a chrons-for-chars exchange. I used to play hard for ranked rewards too, but to my mind it's gotten harder and I could use those chrons elsewhere.

On expeditions I always tell myself I'm going to go for gold and then I get tired of clicking things a few days in and settle in to a pattern of burning my tickets for a quick run through of the higher point rewards.

It's a waste of time now for me to do faction events now so I only go for the equipment reward if it is used by many characters.

For galaxy I will do it if I REALLY want the gold character. Same would be true for expedition.

I love faction events hate galaxy so I get some threshold rewards then done and level crew expedition I've played once didn't have deep crew but I'd probably still sux at it lol
  • I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
If it's faction: I'll grab 3x the threshold crew and call it a day, at least until I decide to try. I'm doing alright in crew slots, but that plan eventually will have to go away when I have crew slot issues. Right now I don't have the resources; I blew all of my time-reducing boosters to grab Mudd. Last week I got 9 three star time reducing boosts; if that's the average I'll be waiting 4-5 more weeks before I can commit. Maybe 3 weeks to go after a hybrid event.

Galaxy... again, I'm in no position to try hard right now. I've favorited nine crew to work on*, after that I'll start the hoarding chrons process again. For a hybrid event I'd like at least 8K chrons; at least that's what worked for me in the past. A full galaxy event would require more than that.

As much as this event type burns me out, I could try hard at expedition events right now.

*might add Stargazer Picard to that list.
  • I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
It depends on the event. I always hit thresholds at a minimum, but may play more from there if it's decent factions or if I need 2 copies of the gold.

It’s all about the crew. If I don’t like the event crew I save my resources for another event and don’t try but I will participate. For instance this event I don’t care for a 248 year old scientist so I did the minimum. Woke up an hour and a half after it started, didn’t bother with the jump start, didn’t religiously check in when I knew shuttles were in. I will still finish top 1000 and get an old man anyway. Next faction with crew I want, I will finish top 25 for sure

    I finish almost all events.
Faction events are fairly pointless for me as I can't rank well enough to FF the 4* reward, and because of the crew slot constraints I have no interest in keeping the 3/4 threshold unless it's a main character I don't yet have. Still, gotta send shuttles somewhere so I see no reason not to send them for the event.

Galaxy events I usually go hard enough to FF both the threshold and Ranked rewards (top 2000 /w the community bonus). Occasionally I'll sit one out if there's been too many of them in a row and I've depleted my pre-farming reserves. Also if I already own the threshold reward I might sit out rather than spending all the equipment for just one character. Once I made top 1000 and plan to do it again eventually, but again lacking crew slots I don't really have the space to make it worthwhile to push hard for 1/5's.

I play every event and will try to obtain all 4*'s. This current event is the first time where I'll be trying to obtain the 5* reward specifically to airlock. I don't really have anything against Soong as a character but his stats are unremarkable. I'm going for the honour since I want to start clearing out a few 2/4*'s.

I won't do this for a Galaxy, Hybrid or Expedition event since they either take up too much resources or time. I will fight hard if I want the 5*.

  • @C-Note they did fix that crit issue in the last hybridized version.. if Expeditions were to ever return in any form, full out or hybrid, that change would likely carry forward.

Myself, I half assed this one when Winn wasn't there 5 star, and I've already got 25 legendarys that take me 6 years to finish by means of Citations and good luck. Unless it's someone I REALLY want for a 5*... Meh.

Now, if we could Immortalize 1/5 star characters FE'd then I'd be going all out nearly every faction and a few more Galaxies then I bother with today.
(Voyages gets the credit on my interest and willingness to engage a Galaxy at all)

  • Really it just depends on whether or not I'm interested in the crew rewards (even if its just "rule of cool" and not for stats).

For this reason I tend to just sit a lot of events out but for the discovery mega event I chased and got Lorca and Tilly. I'm sitting the current event out.

    Precisely.
  • Another missing answer: Even though I don't care about it, I play events like this week to help my Fleet/squad.

And sending out a bunch of shuttles to farm is also a good thing, and it only takes a few minutes every 3 hours, so why not?

If I see something I really want in an event, or have a ton of event crew, then I work a little harder, like last week I placed top 300, mostly because I had 14 event crew, and 10 of them were 4* immortals.

I know they fixed the crit issue. I was simply recalling my experience a year ago in the one full expedition event that has been run. Back then, critting a mission didn't guaranty anything, either within the event, or on any away missions in general. It was tough back then...in order to complete Episode 7, you needed a combo of FE legendaries, and/or FFFE super rares, plus good old fasioned luck if you wanted or needed the rare reward to drop.
  • I finish almost all events.
Honestly, I find that I "punt" galaxy events more often than not due to the strain on chronitons. Even with the difficulty of faction events, I still am able to use them to reach honored status with the various factions.
  • I finish almost all events.
I always play the faction and Expedition events for a top 100 rank, play hybrids for the threshold rewards then drop out and avoid Galaxy events.
  • I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
Depends on the rewards and what crew I have. Sometimes I'll make a run for a particular rank, if I need or want a particular character. But generally, I'd say 75% of the time, I just get the threshold and bow out. Although the last few thresholds have had some increased rewards. Assuming that's the new standard, I'll probably still just try for the top threshold and then stop.

Put me also in the "It Depends" category ...

My primary consideration is what 'new to me' crew members I can potentially get from the event. If they are within my reach, I will go for a 1/5* if I really like the character, but more often my decision is about going for 4* crew.

For Faction events, if I really push it, I can finish in the top 1500, and get the Ranked 4* FF, but the top 1000 is beyond my reach. Most times, I just run shuttles as I would during non-event days, and finish wherever I finish, depending on how competitive the particular event may be (anywhere from 2500 to 10000).

For Galaxy events, if I have done a good job of pre-farming, then I can from time to time reach the top 1000 (as I did to get Captain Lorca), but definitely would not be able to do this for all Galaxy events. More often, I target a top 2000 ranking, so that I can get two 4* FF crew (thanks to the combination of Threshold and Community rewards). For new low-spending players especially, I would highly recommend you selectively play the occasional Galaxy event all out, as I think they are your best source of good 4* crew. There are though some Galaxy events where I just play a bit on the first day to get the lower level Threshold rewards.

On the rarer occasions when we've had them, I have always gone all out in Expedition events (and have sometimes been able to finish in the top 1000).
  • I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
I used to play events all the way through, back when I stood a chance of getting top 1k to get something that was actually worth while. Now I inevitably finish around 1500 and get nothing interesting, so instead I just get my threshold rewards and quit. If they ever decide to do another expedition event I'll finish that, but the others are just so mundane that without some tangible reward they don't feel worth the effort.
Maybe the irony is that we play because we’re Star Trek fans, those hopeful idealists that like to think things will get better when we raise valid concerns about fairness and balance, etc and we forget that DB’s greed openly mocks the values espoused by the franchise they have a license for.

I get all of the threshold rewards, then I'm done.
While I may have a strong enough crew to place high, I don't have the money to, so after I get all threshold rewards, I dip out.

If it is galaxy, I may dip out sooner if the remaining rewards after the 100k supply kit aren't worth spending the chrons to get to them. I hate wasting chrons that I could be using to build a stronger crew.

In shuttle events, I will never make high enough on rank, so I dip out after all thresholds are claimed. I may continue to play the shuttles of the event factions but only because I'll need a component from that faction, not for the actual event points.

In expedition, I tend to play until the end. But we never get expedition so...
