Sad News. Richard Herd has passed away today.

I think now would be a great time to add L'Kor to the game in his honor.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Admiral Paris the only admiral who wasn't a back stabbing villian?

Starfleet does have a history of high level villains. Methinks Section 31 was so busy looking for threats outside of the Federation that they did not pay enough attention to threats from within.

Admirals Riker, Janeway, Picard, McCoy, Archer, Kirk, Forrest, Shanthi, Necheyev, and maybe 'Bill' from ST6 all seemed like upstanding flag officers and not weird, mustache-twirling villains. Half of those were 4 second cameos, Alt Future eps, and main cast characters - so of course they are 'good guys'.

But you're spot on - even in my youth I made the observation that if you were an Admiral in the Trek universe, you were as crooked as can be and were the bad guy of the story.

Yep. Cartwright and Dougherty were as crooked as they come.

Pressman was acting under orders...now that I’m thinking about it the whole Pegasus mission has Section 31 undertones but they weren’t a thing in TNG IIRC—and I may not. Haven’t had any coffee yet.

Admiral Forrest was limited by the fine line he had to walk with the Vulcans and the opposition role he occasionally had to play against Archer, but he was a good man.

I had an Admiral Paris drop yesterday in a voyage. Kind of feel bad for airlocking him now (I also have a copy frozen.)

By their nature in the series, Admirals will tend to be at odds with the crew. There's rarely a story need for an admiral to call up a captain to give them a pat on the back. But even if the relationship is somewhat antagonistic, most aren't villains.

The recurring characters tend to be presented as more well-rounded: Ross, Forrest, Cornwell, and the like. Necheyev kind of falls in between, her relationship with Picard is strained, and some of the missions she's involved in are questionable.

Paris does stand out as an admiral who, despite some tension with his son, is involved with the crew in a far more positive manner. He's even patient with Barclay throughout the Pathfinder episode.

Necheyev gets a bad rep sometimes for the episode of DS9 that ended up being a "what if" scenario for the dominion and events that did not actually take place... She actually was a very true to the uniform, albeit often abrasive admiral

Admiral Ross had a brief alliance with Section 31, but one could say his actions were justified or that they were no worse than Sisko’s when he brought the Romulans into the war.

I think Ross and Forrest are the best examples of federation leadership.
