I buy the monthly card and Campaigns and my mom has bought me extra dilithium or portal packs for my birthday, Christmas, Valentine's, etc. Sis bought me something once as an apology. I burnt myself trying to prune some trees for her. I have been buying LTO's lately, if I have the money and it's tempting.
Those extra crew don't make the slot issue easier. I got my Duras Sisters in the freezer, so now I need two slots for Keiko and Irina. Warship Janeway looks like a good candidate for immortalizing and freezing. Constant voyages and no life really do help.

As hundreds of dollars have been spent on your game, I'm not sure how you can know this to be the case. Even if the crew drops were unhelpful directly, surely the enormous amount of extra honor and the legendary citations would help you to complete and have the option to freeze 4-star and 5-star crew?
Although whether or not the players are spending, the game is far from balanced for the number of crew slots we have. I can't imagine having to work through a super-rare farm in 2020, paying or not - it was challenging enough in 2018!
But in fairness to TP, while they have been giving out fewer free crew slots this year, they have made some effort to make those crew slots unnecessary. They have denatured the mega events so they no longer crescendo to an almighty shuttle-fest where we have had weeks of accruing pertinent new crew and have been steadily unfreezing more bonus crew at 100 merits a day. And with legendary crew like Hernandez, Jhamel and Travers being introduced, it's a much easier decision to chuck them out of the airlock.
However, instead of these negative changes to help address the crew slot problem, it would be nice to see some positive changes. A simple one would be to remove the straight-drop purple from standard 650 packs, so it goes to the final-slot behold at a minimum. This is not difficult to program, and it would help newer players tremendously. The impact on longer-term players would be small, but probably helpful nonetheless (personally, I'm only missing one purple portal star).
We were getting five free crew slots every two months, give or take, up to February 2020. There was then a wait of slightly more than three months, and now we're four months into the latest wait - with no end in sight, despite this week's festivities. I don't think this was intentional or a policy change. As with the other problems in the same time period, it simply looks like a lack of interest from the devs.
I understand that people play in their own way. That is good. For me, buying packs gives such pathetic odds of something good, and if you get something, you have to house it. I therefore decided to save for crew slots. This means I can go for any event I want and have space. I buy the monthly card and occasionally the campaign. That gives enough with just the card to get 5 slots a month or 10 a month when saved.
They did not say there were no more sales. They said not in the next weeks. I predict slots will go on sale before the next mega. When that happens, I will have a significant amount saved and won't need slots until next time.
Frankly, while I've frozen crew I might otherwise have left out, I haven't had a slot crisis in two years. Yes, my style is different, but I've never had to dump legendary crew.
Don't forget, ppl from outside USA pay 30% more. So 3000 crystals cost 44 Euro. That is full tank on my car, or weekly food cost here. So because this "no slot sale" politics also thinking about finish my game after 4 years. I can manage my main, but what's point FF everything and than freeze it? I make alt before 4-5 months to see how is for new player now. Now lvl 64, all FF frozen, strongest card lvl 70, no normal voyage or event or anything. All honor goes for 4* cite. For new player, without expirience, it's mission impossible. In the short, with so unbalance game and so high price's I don't see any future for this game. I see so many good games dissapear like that in last 40 years... Sad.
I guess that for long-time players crew slot issues really depend on their gameplay and priorities (not to say that complaints are irrelevant, but it's not a universal problem, even if you're a low spender). For new players, however, with the incredible amount of crew in the portal, I imagine it will be extremely frustrating to manage crew. When I started playing it already was difficult to get a super-rare to 4/4*, now it must take ages.
So if buying packs is frustrating for me, because 90% of the time it's all honor, for a new player it must be even worse, because they might want to keep the crew that could be useful for them, but they have no space for it and are already drowning in 1/4*.
Limiting crew slots is hurting their overall revenue and takes away a lot of the fun(pretty sure many players have stopped to play or spend, because of this).
And no, the charged dilithium for add crew slots don t make up for it, imho.
It was once said, that the issue with crew slots is on their backbone, so they had to make add crew slots so expensive. I m pretty sure if like 1,000 ppl would buy the max of possible crew slots, TP would get a huge issue(game would become unplayable).
But maybe i am totally wrong here and they already found a solution, but if thes did the current strategy regarding crew slots is just *****.
Nod , the former game producer for STT pre October 2017, once said, specifically, that crew slots and certain game queries (like the dots on items if they are needed) tax the backend database system heavily. Any new features or expansions they did, including crew slots, had to be tested on multiple technical fronts, to make sure the game doesn't crash or their backend doesn't grind to a halt.
What happens if you try to put too much weight on top of a cheaply made $5 table? the entire thing comes crumbling down. What happens when you have too many browser windows open? your computer starts to bog down
that is what DB/WRG is trying to avoid. Let's not be ignorant here. Any action WRG makes will have some kind of affect on their system, and they have to balance features vs cost and performance.

Yep. New player here. The only solution I've found is never ever buy anything for Dil or $, and never open anything. I'm try to freeze crew as fast as possible, but with all the Crew being constantly thrown at us every week its very difficult to stay even. When I airlocked a bunch of my 2* Cadet greens I went against my rule (to see new faces).... and opened at least half dozen x10 of my Premium packs from my stash, plus some Merit pulls: Big mistake. I think I still have 200 Premium pulls unopened, plus another 100 or so. But know I can't use them.
And I'm a paying player (small time but still) so encouraging new paying customers/players like me to not to spend any Dil/$ for Packs seems like opposite of what mobile games usually do*. So for now I only get the Monthly Card and Campaign.
*At least they have a decent amount of popups when signing in (but they sure are not aimed at new players in this roster size restrictive environment.)

@Strategizer, I've done almost exactly as you have - recently made it a priority to immortalize and freeze my remaining cadets to make way for rarer/better cards and to fill collections, didn't open any portal pulls stashed away from events... then saw the empty crew slots the cadets had left and got cheeky, so used a few portal pulls... and now I have a roster full of 1/4* cards that I need & can't airlock because I still have nodes to complete/long voyage milestones to fulfil.
I mean it'll keep me going in the game for sure, to try and level them all up so I can use them, but as a newish VIP0/F2P player it's overwhelming to get new crew in events and then get more crew in won portal pulls... it's almost a disincentive to claim your prizes from events because you don't have the room for it.
Newer players- the best advice I can suggest about crew slot limits is to work your way through the crew from the lowest stars first. Ignore the 4* cards unless you get multiple copies. Just airlock ‘em. It hurts, but if you play long enough, you’ll get them back. Level and freeze every 1*, 2*, and 3* crew (of course, clear all cadet challenges along the way, and keep the few 3* cards needed for arena). Once the lower tier cards are out of your way, you can put effort into building your 4* roster. Initially, ignore the weaker cards - again, just airlock ‘em. Ex: Riker Q, Tieran Kes, etc - keepers; Luther Sloan, Commander Sela, etc - don’t hesitate to collect 200 honor. I’d recommend treating the weaker 5* cards the same way, though I recognize the difficulty in airlocking a legendary (‘cause these may not ever come back to you). Unless you intend to be a big spender, there are too many cards in the game at this point to assume you’ll be able to collect them all. Be ruthless and just ignore the cards that were useful in 2016/2017 but are now just dead weight on a roster.

I would even say airlock all the 1* and extra 2*/3* you won't need for cadets initially. Once the rest of your roster is stable and strong enough it's easy enough to collect the 1-3 again and freeze them. But you don't want to be sitting on a bunch of useless 1/2 crew just waiting for the second star to drop. Or spend resources freezing some 1* crew and then not be able to level the 4/4 you got from a galaxy event or the mega 4/5.

Agreed 100%. Focus on crew that can help you clear stars on cadet missions for warpable farming, then focus on crew you can immortalize that will help you get farther into the episodes and distress calls to farm items for the harder-to-level 4*/5* crew. Airlock any 4* crew that is incredibly weak and consider airlocking any of them that are expensive to equip unless they are really strong...that honor can be used to fund purchases of trainers to level up the crew you’re keeping, if you’re running out of trainers.

I kindly disagree. Focusing on immo every 1/2/3* as a new player is a huge waste of ressources and slows you down by a lot of getting a competitive roster.
Just do the needed min 2*/3* crew to clear the cadet missions.
Then focus on new event SR crew since usually there stats are better than 95% of the SR crew in the portal. Make sure u always have enough ressources(chrons/credits/merits) for events, so u can easily clear the 130k threshold to get the new event 4* and FE it. You will do better in the event as well, since the bonus crew(SR) will help. Win, win.
Airlock all SR crew from portal that are below 800 base stats(with exceptions).
Don t focus on collections(cause often they contain pretty outdated stats crew that won t do you any good).
Better FE a 1/5 Legendary with decent stats that will help you huge in voyages over any 4* crew.
With monthly card only(maybe campaigns as well) and a good fleet, it‘s possible to build a competitive new toon(that can finish top 1,500 in faction events)
in less than 3 months.
But yeah, that‘s only for ppl with the goal to become competitive as fast as possible.

Agreed. I would add also that new players make sure they do every mega and find a way to get the 25,000 points needed in each of the events of the mega to get that event recurring legendary so they will have 4/5 crew after each mega which will help them out significantly.
I agree with those who say that it's better for new players not to keep any non-essential 2* and 3*. And I would definitely airlock all 1*.
This is based on how things worked years ago, but I'm pretty sure that it's still a big sink of resources for a new player.
Definitely go back later and immortalize all of the 1-3* crew for collection and achievement purposes, but yes...if being competitive in events and building a strong crew as quickly as possible without backing up the Brinks truck is the goal, be selective with the crew you keep and use the honor you get from flushing them to improve those you do keep.
Pffff...Back in my day we got 35 slots and we had to be happy
And you walked five miles to school barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways.
The number of Ambassador Foxes I jettisoned due to crew slot issues could have bought me at least a rare citation, if citations and honor had existed back in Ye Olden Days. [/old]
Pffff...Back in my day we got 35 slots and we had to be happy
Of course, when we say slots it was really just a series of holes in the ground that our crew would stand near for fear of being airlocked. And it was in the middle of a roadway!
Ah, yes! I actually agree with those saying to ignore (airlock) the less useful lower star cards until you’re ready to take on the task of immortalizing a few of them at a time. I typed too fast without nuance. The main point I was trying to make was to not over-accumulate 1/4 cards before clearing out the cadet-level cards, and frankly to not accumulate too many 1/4 cards at all for a while. Those cards bogged me down in the beginning, but I thought I absolutely had to keep 1/4 cards like Agent Harris, Lore, Fencing Sulu, etc. because I knew more stars on them would be helpful (back in the day). There are certainly more initial crew slots today than in the past, so more flexibility exists for hanging onto a few more cards, but ultimately the only way to beat the slot restrictions (w/o buying slots) is to be very selective about who you keep. An army of 1/4 cards is as much of a roster drag on a new player as the army of 1/5 cards is to established players.
I started playing the game 11 months ago intially as F2P - so my experience will differ from many of the more experienced players & I had the "luxury" of 100 slots to start with.
I did not know of the forums or wiki for 2 months and dabbled on my own in the begining.
I think as time goes by and the available crew gets to 1K mark, focusing on 4* crew to start with does not necesarily work for F2P players, as in the first months you will constantly be short on resources and not be able to lvl crew quickly to a point where missions can be completed - which is furstrating
My play style changed as I found a good fleet, the forums, the wiki, an even better fleet as well when I started focusing on my targets., so a quick "Thank You" to the community at large........but long story short....
With 120 slost to start - I found it much easier to stockpile items, components, credits, chorns etc by focusing on:
1. Getting through epidose 1, 2 & 3 possibly also 4 on normal
2. Getting through the cadet mission on normal
3. Getting to 2 hr voyages and the 3 and the 4hrs
4. Working through faction missions to get them all to 100%
5. Playing any and every event to whatever level my chron stash allowed
6. leaving 4* crew unleveled - as it was too "expensive" (chron, mission, etc), unless i got more than 1 copy
At the end of 4 months, I had
1. Opened all episodes
2. Completed each episode at normal, and quite a few at elite and some at epic
3. Completed all factions and started on tanking
4. Completed all cadet misisons at all levels
5. Frozen every single 1*, 2* and 3*'s
6. Exceeding 6 hrs voyages
At that stage I swicthed to a startegy outlined by the more expereinced players in this thread and have tried to get better every week.....but I honetsly do not think I would have stuck with the gameif I have not gotten the lower, early crew and episodes and missions under my belt.....
Today I do not have the slot space or wish to entertain crew less than 3* (unless is a fav char or instant damage like cmd worf) - so would not get aorund to them at all - for at least another year if i had not done them early on.
Again YMMV, and if you are an experienced STT player and start afresh - your thinking and play will be based on a huge experience stick pile, providing many shortcuts that new players do not understand
Anyone know when the next discount crew slot event will occur similar to the 1500 dilithium per 3 slots event last month or two?
I now have 18k in dilithium saved up ready to buy slots at 1500 but will not buy them at 3k. So come on TP you're way overdue for a crew slot sale
That is basically how I always played, I don't remember ever buying a pack with Dilithium, other than some small purchases, and Shuttle slots, I basically only purchase Crew Slots.
But Since this new policy, not only I will only buy slots on sales, I will not purchase dilithium anymore, this game doesn't deserve any more of my money, until they revise this new undisclosed policy
Since this new policy, not only I will only buy slots on sales, I will not purchase dilithium anymore
What's the policy?
I would rather buy 5 slots for 1,500 dil than for 3,000, sure, but it's not like a slot sale is the only time you can buy slots...
And it's not like there ever was a policy of a crew slot sale every X months.
And no policy that says we have to continue spending money on this game either. TP should consider that.
Such a good point. After 4.5 years of literally daily play and 1.5 years of finishing in the top-1500 of every single event, I quit playing this game because I ran all the way out of crew slots for legendaries (having airlocked or frozen all purples). I didn't want to choose between airlocking 1/5s I had worked for or freezing more 5/5s and impacting my ability to run long voyages (having already frozen the 40ish 5/5s I have that never got voyage use).
The actual punishment for playing the game every day and participating in every event is having to spend $40 per month on crew slots to keep playing (that's the non-sale sticker price for 5 crew slots). The crew slot sales are too infrequent to cut the cost on that in any meaningful way.

And you walked five miles to school barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways.

This is based on how things worked years ago, but I'm pretty sure that it's still a big sink of resources for a new player.
The number of Ambassador Foxes I jettisoned due to crew slot issues could have bought me at least a rare citation, if citations and honor had existed back in Ye Olden Days. [/old]
Of course, when we say slots it was really just a series of holes in the ground that our crew would stand near for fear of being airlocked. And it was in the middle of a roadway!
And I will take any excuse to link to the Four Yorkshiremen skit!
