This seems okay, and fine

Just take your loss, and save your merits. Otherwise, you might find yourself with less than 50 merits.
because gauntlet walls are a sad reality

Let's make it clear. Not everyone in your gauntlet has Red Angel.
This has been what I consider the main problem with gauntlet. That captains that have higher rank, than the ones composing the wall you are facing, have been skipped. And frankly, it seems that they were purposely skipped over to chose the toughest crew for you to face. This seems to happen more frequently the higher your rank is. (Hmm should I actually be saying lower for higher, what I mean is one is the highest rank)
No but I think you may not understand the subtleties of the gauntlet. No offence but I'm always merits positive and I refresh a lot.
But when bad luck strikes I sometimes just give in and redshirt someone. I never refresh more than 3 times in a row.
Look, if you're just looking to troll, that's fine. It says so in your name, so I should probably just take it at face value. But in case you're actually looking for strategy, lemme tell you how I usually play against walls:
1. Is one of them noticeably weaker? If so, maybe I have someone who could beat them with just one skill. (In this case, the second from the right is clearly not fully equipped and a strong DIP crew like Gowron might be able to take her down). Alternatively, if you have the exact crew that is making up the wall in your roster, this approach also works.
2. Am I on a streak that's worth hitting the refresh for? If yes, spend the merits.
3. If I'm not on a streak, let me put a comparable but slightly weaker crew against the one with the strongest stats. Maybe it's just confirmation bias, but I could swear the RNG of Gauntlet favours the bold.
So no, you don't have to spend the merits. But it might be worth it. You also have 1500 merits, which is more than enough to go for a reroll without feeling guilty.
Or patience 😉
and it would be so easy to fix this thing ...
a) simple check to prevent duplicate champs from showing up.
b) simple change of logic to fix the range of difficulty so you have a range of 6 difficulties .. with appropriate pt values ...
... etc.
The gauntlet is not a waste of time, it's by far the best source of quality legendary crew you can fuse for free up to 5/5. It's by far the most generous feature of the game.
If voyages and events were merely half as generous as the gauntlet is, then the game would be a much better F2P experience.
I used to think along the same lines, but that's not really fair either, since a victory for you takes points away from the loser. It's not really fair to the potential loser if they get a weaker option picked from their gauntlet team, especially if they have the same character that is forming that particular wall.
The problem is the proliferation of the main gauntlet heavyweights.
Agreed. The algorithm randomly picks players, and then selects their best crew to defend with. It's unfair to the player to not select the best crew. And if the game tried to avoid players with the same crew it would result in players without the gauntlet exclusives suffering even more as they came up more often and are constantly defeated.
The way to stop gauntlet walls is to have more crew variety. There are 15 skill pairs. Create new crew that are top in each of those pairs and good in gauntlet overall. You can't select all 15 crew for a gauntlet so players will have to choose which crew to use. Now you won't have a wall because everyone won't have picked the same crew.
Right now there are ~7 top gauntlet crew most of which are gauntlet exclusives and available to everyone. It's not a shock that everyone picks the same crew.
Is it? Perhaps you're luckier than me, but I've got just three legendary characters in 13,963 rounds. As a minimal spender, I find voyages and events far more rewarding.
I have:
Locutus FF + 2/5 and others I airlocked before
Guinan FF x2
Armus FF x2
Caretaker FF x2
Red Angel FF x2
I've never spent DIL on gauntelt. It's just from playing regularly and using merit refreshes.
As I was building up my voyages, those FF gauntlet crew and mega 5/5 crew were the core of how I got to 8 and then 10 hour voyages.
if i need to refresh the oponents i just loose with my weakest crew...
though i managed to get all gaunt crew 5/5 prior replacement (except luctatus bcoz i ignored gaunt in the beginning :P)
I use the gauntlet as a merit farm when I need them but sometimes I’ll choose the five and not do one battle. I still get a crate, in fact several weeks ago I did this very thing and rng gave me a huge grin. The one crate I got contained a red angel, almost dropped my iPad. It does happen.
It just gives you crew that are suitable for Gauntlet though, it can literally take years to fully fuse a Gauntlet crew with just Gauntlet drops and until you do they will be useless in most other places. So, assuming you are getting honor from other sources and maybe buy the occasional LTO or campaign you will very likely never need a gauntlet crew outside of gauntlet. I'm not saying they are not nice to have, but effort vs reward on the game mode is super low, so low that my honest opinion is that no one should prioritise Gauntlet as it's mostly a massive waste of time.
And that right there is exactly why Gauntlet is broken and I hate it. Yes, the 65% vs 5% losses are brutal, yes, losing mirror battles with better stats is awful, but the worst is the way the rewards are set up.
I don't mind the occasional drop for a short streak or lower ranking. After all, if that didn't happen ever, no lower level players would ever get the exclusive crew.
But, when I've had streaks approaching 100 and ranked high regularly, and never seem to get a drop off those, that's absurd. Then you literally don't even play, and get an Angel. How does that make sense?!?
For the record, I have Red Angel at 3/5 and each copy dropped off a 3 win streak. It took forever to get my first, and she was my first Gauntlet crew since Armus in my first year.
I still don't have Caretaker or Guinan, and none of my Gauntlet exclusives have hit 5/5 yet. Despite really good results. Yet I keep hearing stories like yours, and it makes me want to throw something. Or of people who've gotten multiple copies FF, despite barely playing it.
Gauntlet needs a total overhaul, without question. But the way the five reward crew drop should be the first thing fixed IMO. This is ridiculous. 🙄
