For all those hating the concept of the Mega Event.....

Why not just take the month off?

I have been pushing for mirror universe month event as have others so I am happy to see this upcoming mega event. An easy to get 4/5 crewman and crew I can lvl up all month that will give bonus. Sign me up. Now all we need is a pet event with Porthos, Spot, and Picard's lionfish or The Doctor's holographic fish. U could even have their owners give bonus in the event.

So many good choices for pets. Or just have a special pet pack.

  • In fairness, it's harder to abstain from even part of a mega event than it is to just skip an individual event. For one thing, chances are pretty slim that a player won't be interested in at least one of the reward crew in one of the four events. Furthermore, the crew that one can pick up from one part of a mega event can be tremendously helpful in another part that maybe a player does want to play. Take for instance the middle two chapters of "A Good Day to Lie", the Klingon mega-event:

Part 2 "When Giants Walk" | Faction

    5* Protomorphosis Worf
    4* Ambassador K'Ehleyr
    3* Maquis Takeover Torres
    4* Liaison Torres
    2* Security Chief Worf

Part 3 "The Heart of the Empire" | Faction/Expedition Hybrid

    5* Dahar Master Kang
    4* Klingon Torres
    3* Commander Kang
    4* General Martok
3* Maquis Takeover Torres [only two copies in the thresholds]

All I really wanted out of that entire mega event were Dahar Master Kor (part 1 threshold) and Dahar Master Kang (part 3 rank). If these were all unrelated events, I might have not really bothered with part 2 at all. However, because I wanted to compete heavily in part 3, it would have been poor game play for me to pass up the 3/4 Liaison Torres and 3/3 Maquis Takeover Torres in the rewards for part 2 because she featured again in part 3.

Mind you, I was perfectly content to participate, but it's an illustrative example of the kind of setup that can make it less simple for a given hypothetical player who may well be disinterested in part of a mega event to skip it.

All that said, I do wholeheartedly agree that the compulsion that seems to drive some players to participate in full in every event is probably unhealthy and even more probably affects other aspects of their daily lives, and in that case it would be prudent to work on reining in that sense of obligation.

This is also likely true, but I feel that the modern gaming culture as a whole wouldn't be nearly the success it is without a whole lot of obsessive and compulsive players needing to feed that craving on a pretty regular basis.

I would say that's demonstrably true. I would also say that it's true of the entire capitalist system. We have some seriously unhealthy impulses as a society, y'all.
  • There's another element to consider. I know most players have a massive backlog of crew to equip and level at all times, but I've managed to get entirely caught up a few times in the last several weeks. In one seven day period, I had three entire days without anyone to work on at all. And I can tell you that without someone to work on and without an event to participate in, there isn't a lot to sustain my interest in the game now that I've cleared all the missions* and hit Honored status with every faction.

*I'm still in need of critting three ENG nodes, but none of my current crew can do that so it'd be pointless to waste the chronitons replaying those two missions ad nauseum.

I have been there for at least a month, all crew is FE. I sit back, collect things, do cadet challenges, and wait for events. If I don’t want the crew it’s another week of nothing. Like this week. The mirror event is very welcome. Definitely want Reed and Jadzia. At one point this month you will see my name atop the leaderboard. The time is ripe and I will find my event. You just can’t realistically go for the win week after week.

Because a mega-event is four linked events, it's possible to have an extreme interest in one part of it but almost no interest in other parts.

So, for example, if Week 3's 5* reward is a Maximillian Forrest or a Mirror Sulu or a Mirror Scotty or whatever, that's a character I really want. I play the game on a budget, so the way I'd normally get it is to place in the top 1000 of the event.

Realistically, that's not going to be possible to do without Mirror Picard, since everyone else in the event is going to have a 3/5 Mirror Picard pretty early on.

This isn't such a big deal for me personally. Mirror Picard does nothing for me - he's far from the dumbest character in a new TNG comic series that loses me as soon as I see the art on Wesley or Riker or La Forge or Data - but he doesn't actively offend me the way the botched art on an Airlock Martok (three times out the airlock and counting, baby!) does. So I'll just collect, level and use my Mirror Picard without a whole lot of enthusiasm, because it's not so bad and the competition requires it.

However, I still have a lot of sympathy for players who see that Picard and hate him but don't want to miss out on characters they do like who form part of the mega event.

It's a little like if you're a huge Star Wars fan but can't stand Jar-Jar Binks. Yes, the Phantom Menace is totally voluntary and you don't actually have to watch it, but if you enjoy the franchise overall and want to get the whole immersive feel on a marathon re-watch, you're probably going to put it on and think dark thoughts about George Lucas every time Jar-Jar's ridiculous face pops up on screen. And if there were a forum where you could pop in and grumble to Lucas every time that face popped up, it might just make you feel like your dissatisfaction was being heard and - maybe, just maybe - might result in improvements in the future.

The problem is having the mega event during the holiday season, when people are extra busy.

Just kind of rude and selfish behavior. Oh wait we are talking about DB, so that's normal behavior.

My take on this... I have been getting just murdered in events starting with the 2nd event in the last mega event. 5 of my last 6 shuttles have failed in this event.... still, I am looking forward to the new mega event... I want the new Mirror Picard esp. if he looks like some of the graphics people have been showing. I personally don't care that he is not canon though I do understand why people are objecting ... and it is more fun to have guys from episodes you know and love.

Now I fully expect to my butt kicked to next Tuesday in the new mega event, but I will get another 4/5 that I can use and I will be grateful for him. I know I can't compete against the people who have real money to throw into this game unlike to 10-15$$ I can afford to spend now and then. But it's all good.....

Oh great Q give me grace to accept with serenity
    my failed shuttles,
DB grant me a 5 star guy now and then
    to keep me happy,
I surrender what little money I have to you
So keep me reasonably content and having a good time as you are the host of this party
That is all I am asking for :)

This is great. For those not wanting to do these events, just do the begininning and get the Picards then stop. You can find a few hrs or less needed to do that in four days surely.

Personally I didn't mind them, (and yes I know how traitorous that is). But I'd never put them above 4-6 either. Heck, I like most of the now-cast-into-the darkness-of-"EU" (grumble) books more than 1-3.

Anyhow, wrong franchise for this board so we should just go about our business and move along. Move along.

I fully intend to kick your butt waaaaay past next Tuesday... probably the next THREE Tuesdays... LOL... Good Luck 🍀

PS: I spend the $5 a month too and it gives me a weird sense of satisfaction to be able to do better than guys who seem to spend large multiples of that in each event. Don’t resign yourself to a Butt kicking just because the other guys have a huge advantage, it’s more challenging that way.

  • I don’t have a problem with the concept of a mega event. I just think when you have one every other month they seem less special. And, on some level, playing the first event “commits” you to playing the other events (collecting stars for the reoccurring 5-star character, earning more event crew variants for the next event, etc.).

Now, unlike that awful Discovery mega event, and the slightly less awful but still tedious Klingon mega event, I am more excited about this mega event than even the Borg mega event. But, the fact that it took me 5 minutes to remember the theme of the previous mega event, means that there are probably too many too often. They feel less special.

  • I'm looking forward to this one, provided it's mainly crew from the shows and not overrun by IDW's silliness.
  • I shall do what I do, plan and strategize, and hope that I have enough chrons to do what I want to do. Some people compete, I just try to get a hold of what I want. I'm looking forward to this series of events but so many others are too I wonder how fierce the competition will be.
