I would have to agree with @dext74 about this being a good midweek event type, but not to replace a whole event type in the main rotation. I will agree with Joe on the video though, it does offer a way to utilize more crew, and that does keep it interesting. In any case, anything is better than galaxy, which I have always found to be the worst event type, and I only play those long enough to get my 4x4* crew, I don't even go for the full individual rewards table anymore, even though I would only ever have to spend a couple hundred chrons to do so.
I will say I also like the idea of being able to finish the mission early like shuttles, but the finish mission payment should be commensurate with the level of the mission VP (i.e. mission earns 100 VP = 5 chrons to finish, mission earns 2500 VP = 80 chrons, etc.)
a couple things I will reiterate that I think others were also trying to point out:
each faction should have different missions. (my guess is that they planned to implement it with that all along, but in the interest of time, they overlapped just for the Beta)
Definitely need community rewards
need to have the ability to get updated screen notifications as to when the missions are complete, like Voyages and Shuttles have now
A way to tell the success/fail rate of the mission prior to executing much like shuttle missions (Can a specialist mission fail? There's currently no way to know if it did?)
I will say it's a creative way to add something extra to the game to alleviate from stagnation, so kudos to the team for that! If they had integrated this with the voyage event, (instead of the mini gauntlet) during the ALERT phases, that would have been much cooler, although much more complicated I realize.
A 2nd mission type that I hate to go with voyages. I don't like the timer missions as this game is not my life. unfortunately as more of these get added I fear its going to drive me away from the game more then anything. I prefer to be able to sit down and play when I want, not feeling like I NEED to sit and play at specific times to be competitive.
