Gauntlet Rant

So I'm in the gauntlet that ends today (Ferengi, Merchant, Communicator)...

Why does it feel like I'm going up against Surak every time? I realize it's because he has three high proficiency scores, but come on, does he have to come up every time?

Literally, just did 3 rounds, all three a wall of Suraks. One Locutus in there, to be fair. And mine was already down for the round. Durp.

I believe it was the B schedule’s last round where I ended up getting something like 5 MED/DIP matches out of 8 total, with the other three all also having DIP. Sometimes the RNG doesn’t use lube...it looks like this is that time for you.

That's what happens when DB gives away a 5* to everyone in a mega that has huge guantlet rolls. Everyone uses Surak and Surak is often the best match for skill combos, so he comes up for every player that is selected.

I'm really not eager to let this turn into a "Let's complain that f2p players get good things without paying for them, this is socialism" debate.

Obviously what the gauntlet code does after picking the round's opponents is it finds their character with the highest roll score to challenge you. The problem is, Surak has 3 high proficiencies, so he's going to come up often.

I don't really know how you could prevent it, unless there was some code that prevents it from displaying the character you just faced?
  • This, and the ones that obviously target Guinan, are my least favorite. Here's somewhere I wish the game would RNG.

I mean they can't be too random, because it might pick an opponent's card with no matching skills. But there's definitely no denying that Surak is likely going to be featured in 3 out of 6 skills, unless the player happens to have a stronger card. That's a lot of "Vulking" Surak.
  • that's true for every crew member. for any crew card in the game, lots of people have them, and thus will be using them in an event shuttle seat, voyage slot, arena ship, or gauntlet crew. Gauntlet is just more in your face because you're fighting 1 on 1, but all of the other areas of the game also have plenty of crew use duplication for those competing near the top.
  • I once got a wall of Suraks 3 times in a row. I do not pick him often just to get some variety, but I often get beat badly when I dont use him.
  • Surak I can deal with, because while he is a very handy, versatile Gauntlet option, he is rarely the best of the best for most pairings. The only one that really bothers me is the Guinan 65% gauntlet, because you either have her, which means endless mirror matches, or you don't, which means you are TOTALLY hosed. I really think that one ought to be slightly modified. She would still be a powerhouse with 45% crit and other cards would have a slightly better chance of competing.

    Only 3?? I've had 10 caretaker walls in a row before :s

I'm in the same gauntlet schedule as the OP - the "Quark" gauntlet. Convergence Day and Martian are both at 65%, but... Surak, Surak, Surak, Surak. He's only 25%, but he's beaten me more than I've beaten him using one of the Quarks. (Excluding the DIP-SCI match-up, which of course I'm not using Quark for.) I appreciate the discussion here - gives me a better understanding of why he won't go away.

Speaking on behalf of the apparent 1% that does NOT have Surak, I personally hope he dies in a fire while being drawn and quartered, poisoned, irradiated, suffocated, and stung by no fewer than eight swarms of hornets.

Wow... that’s pretty harsh words for the Father of Vulcan Logic... most illogical 😇

  • I finally got Caretaker so now gauntlet is just merit farming for me.

You'd be surprised just how many you can gain by simply not refreshing rounds.

Same. I’m finally able to do merit pulls again.

That’s because the higher critical rate only applies to the crew you are facing, not really to your own crew.

At least, it seems that way...

I guess I have just been having bad luck then :)

Edit: My comment was not actually serious, it was more on bad RNG luck.

    Yes, bad luck totally happens.

Thus far in my collection, I've observed a total of 16 failures at 95% of higher (out of ~2300 total rounds) including a 99% failure.

5% Locutus vs 5% Kahless (not FEd) on DIP/SEC
    389-768 / 274-546 5%
    vs
    110-335 / 217-597 5%
    v76nh1pzw9yh.png

    Result:
    600 189
    400 632**
    698 270
    376 436
    459 567
    400 892**
    =======
    2933 2986

    So:
    1) Unlikely crits (0 vs 2, both at 5%)
    2) Average rolls on my side (50.59% average percentile)
    3) Above average rolls for the opponent (67.96% avg)

EDIT: I've observed a total of 279 matches with 99% estimated probability and this was the one and only failure so far.

Just wanted to share this pic I kept since it seems relevant to the topic.

Please see previous statement regarding the need for death by fire while being drawn and quartered, poisoned, irradiated, suffocated, and stung by no fewer than eight swarms of hornets.

    Gauntlet is so frustrating
  • Probably the only solution at this stage (other than reworking gauntlet game rules entirely) is to slowly powercreep Surak out of the uber-dominant category. At least for some of his skill pairs.

SEC-SCI seems to be a good candidate for the first beastly crew release (as it won’t knock down Caretaker too much too soon).

ENG-SCI and SCI-MED can follow some time after.

Species 8472 Invader fits that pair pretty nicely:
    SEC (345–698) SCI (236–595)

It is my highest gauntlet SEC roll, and even though it is only a two stat, I use it more often than not. It can crush Surak in the right matchups.

I am in the same gauntlet and while I do see Surak if I need to I am happy to spend a few merits to skip. Overall I get he is in a lot of gauntlets but the only time he is even remotely annoying to me is when he gets a decent crit chance.

Kim, 45% (non-fatigued) vs Banjo Boy, 5%.................wish I could hit my 5%'ers like that.......and of course in the reverse match-up, my Banjo Boy hits 0 and Kim hits 4 of 6...........
