Well thanks for adding it , my fleet chat is now full with eider ##### or one letter lines of chat .... great quality of life improvement .... Add censoring as optional this is getting ridiculous .... some of the words censored are like really far out on the spectrum .... Also its censoring a a lot of words from Romanian or Hungarian that are commonly used like say : CUM , meaning what/ how in Romanian. I live in Europe and i wasn't raised with censoring ...

  • your fleet uses in game chat? that's your first mistake to be honest.

We need this to be honest

As much as it is hard to believe and shouldn't be done, my fleet also uses in-game chat. I have tried to get them to move to LINE or outside apps but they just don't feel the need to.

Fun fact: The ships are propelled by bouncy castle technology.
  • fleet chat is there for a reason, noone in my fleet wants to use an outside app to communicate so saying the fleet chat is "our problem" is ridiculous. also ridiculous is the fact that my fleet name is now censored in game chat. please fix these glaring problems, DB.

Yeah, I continue to avoid chat apps too. My whole fleet uses discord though, so I'm just glad they're not threatening me with...excommunication. :p

moving to discord is the best thing our fleet ever did ... we act and function much more like a team now that we have a proper communications channel.

It's crazy when things about the game are censored. Like IDIC. Let's be a little smarter about what's filtered out...

That is the problem I am having with it as well. Things like ‘admin’, and ‘naruto’ are ridiculous to have sensored while I have seen others in UC post very horrible stuff that is allowed.
  • I'm so sad I can't name every Med/Eng voyage "U*ck this voyage" anymore - creative misspellings are fun!
  • i believe they are deliberately trying to screw the chat up so badly that people stop bothering try. if the new chat filter is any sign of things to come, i don't expect them to remain in business much longer.
they all ready sacked 1/3 of their personnel. now the chat becoming so trashed with garbage they may as well just bann the entire alphabet. i have noticed that they are now banning single letters.
its just DB Forcing their TYRANT views on the people. who ever keeps adding more and more to the censor filter needs to have their head removed from their rectum. <== to put it in medical terms.
at this point i assume that they found some jack **tsk tsk** from the Salem Witch trials to decide on what can and cant be said.
HEY, DB, TRY READING THE CONSTITUTION. but i guess that's also banned.
DB needs to fire the Ferrengi and higher more Engineers, Rom doesn't count.

The biggest problems is all the players playing around and trying to figure out what words are censored. That's why you see #### everywhere.

Its on steroids and has no intelligence behind it and thus is killing actual real proper use words that are inoffensive that are close enough. Its running too tight.

At least you can now use the words "accumulate" and "neighborhood", where you couldn't before. (Was curious about the reasoning behind filtering the latter word a little while ago, and finally discovered it was because it contained the letters "HBO" -- which you still can't use on their own in STT chat, for whatever silly reason.) But as a fleetmate pointed out, "Nickelback" is still considered a dirty word by someone at DB. ;)

I'm all in favor of trying to clean up the cesspool that UC has become. But trying to censor with bots never works well. (Just look at the great job our old forum AI was doing at spam filtering.)

What is needed, is a real live person whose job it is to monitor the room and personally message offensive posters. Then they can suspend or permanently ban those who break the rules. Like an in-game Shan.

Would anyone take such a thankless job? I think I'd rather shovel actual animal manure all day than have to play room monitor in those virtual sewers.

We just need some explanation of what is censored, what is not, and a way that we as a community can work with DB to uncensor some words that shouldnt be censored and censor some words that are not censored but should be.
    Let’s fly!
  • Dump this forking cesnsorship. DB is the little girl that rats you out for swearing in grade 3.... Those dark scarring memories.

Seriously, grow up DB. Stop trying to sensor life. Tilly said the f word so we should too. It's my kinda bridge I'd try to fly from.
  • This censorship is a perfect example of what is wrong with the USA.

You do make a good point about the Tilly example.

  • As someone who worked as a mod for a while doing exactly what someone suggested, it was a thankless draining job. There's a reason bots are used. From irc to cbox to yahoo chat to AIM, bots have always been employed where smart filters could not.

Honestly all that needs to be done is a few tweaks and make it so that anyone who tries to spam with inappropriate comments gets dinged for it. I think everyone needs to chill with their doom and gloom worse game evar because censorz stuff.

  • I can't talk about my favorite free image editor anymore, GIMP.
  • You do know that freedom of speech does not apply to a private company right? Schools can ban you from wearing clothes with swears or sexual things. Companies can do the same thing. They can also limit what you do online on their networks.

Hundreds of games played online employ censoring.

If you're gonna go on about THE LAW and FREEDOM OF SPEECH and READ THE CONSTITUTION, maybe actually know what the rights you speak of apply to.

Freedom of speech makes it so you can't be imprisoned by the government for saying the administration is bad. You have the freedom to say the game is bad, just as I have the freedom to say blow it out your tubenblurble.

(As a side note, please don't even PRETEND like Europe has never employed censoring. Depending on age, I'm sure there are at least a few players who remember when every word you said or wrote was scrutinized or banned altogether.)

I have the freedom to say the game is bad...but not our overlords. If i say something bad about them, i get censored...and i'm not talking about profane words.
And allow me to feel oppressed when my own language is being censored. I don't give a flying F that c u m is a bad word in english, in my language it means what/how...it's the begining of the word buy and many others. And there are many examples.
So, basically, DB is censoring my language not my foul language and that is just plain stupid!
  • welcome to the 'murican order....where words hurt and safe places are a must!

Such a shame to make it about something that is just rhetoric from a political side. I for one do not ever use the "in game chat feature" because the Universal chat can be filled with what appears to be teenage boys spouting sexual or hateful stuff. So I can see that DB tries to put some form of regulating censoring in place to try and keep the hate/discriminatory speak to a minimum. I personally do not think it is really possible to do that but I have no problem with the effort. But to then go and have a simply reply like the above probably says more about you then about reality.

To give a simple example. I myself grew up in Europe one block away from a former NAZI concentration camp and during my work in the hospital I have, in the past, come accross multiple survivors of some of the worst camps from WWII, so I get very sad and even angry when some teenage punk uses nazi references to deliberately hurt other players that are in the universal chat or even the many times that there are pathetic sexual references to women or extremely derogatory terms in reference to gay or LGBT people... I believe this kind of speech has no place in a decent society but we might disagree on that. And just as an FYI, I am also a military veteran so I do not need "safe spaces" as you refer to, I just need decent people that behave with some decorum.

First of all, this is not censoring the foul language, this is censoring words that might offend and that is moronic!
This is not about protecting but about imposing an arbitrary and idiotic rule on people.
But, i get it that from a soldiers point of view it's quite alright and after your own heart to censure another language in order to protect the feelings of someone.

DB is 100% within their rights to regulate conversation in forums they own. There's certainly a "can" vs "should" argument to be made, but there is nothing even close to illegal about it. No one has an unalienable right to make an internet post in someone else's chatroom/forum.

If you don't want DB to have authority on what you post, go to the STT Reddit.

I suspect that this new profanity filter is simply an attempt to maintain their E-10+ rating in the app store. Either that or its a switch to different third party chat provider in a misguided attempt to save money.

The old filter would also block out innocuous words and there were ways to get around it to post profanity, though I was never offended by the words, only by the misogynist and racist comments that cropped up, and for that censorship isn't the answer; social change is.

I miss the comic strip style @%!& the most...that was funny. The ###### blocking looks too much like a redacted CIA document.

My main complaint about it is that it seems to have been rolled out without any QA, testing, notice or forethought (sounds familar)

One more note: This isn't a first ammendment issue. DB isn't a branch of the US government (think about how long the ticket wait times would be if it was!)

Just because they can, doesn't make them any different from any totalitarian system. And right now, that's what they are.
Btw, how can censuring almost an entire language be legal? That's discrimination, that's saying that my language is a foul language.
