So from what I'm reading the general consensus is drops are completely random, chest type doesn't matter and never use merits or dilithium. This only reinforces my belief that DB has created some false hope with Gauntlet rankings making them meaningless and to have folks waste Merits trying was just a way for DB to have players dump stockpiles of merits. So my post title was correct. Your input was appreciated everyone.
0 Guinan, 3 Caretaker and 1 Armus so far (at least one caretaker and the armus were both from the 3rd consecutive win reward). I don't think I've ever received crew from the end-of-gauntlet reward chest

Yes.
There are lots of resource spending traps like that in the game, it's just that some like Scans are easier to spot.
However, the Gauntlet is only "meaningless" if you don't view merit farming as valuable, so the thread title on its own might have stimulated a little disagreement I do believe you can still come out slightly ahead on merit farming with the occasional merit refresh, but the merit ROI overall is higher if you don't.
Six months of dumping all your farmed merits into merit packs (rather than re-investing in gauntlet) will get you:
A bit further down the road on the death march to Locutus
A very high (>90%) chance of getting at least one legendary from merit packs
A non-zero, but well less than 100%, chance of getting the Gauntlet legendary
1 Locutus, 1 Guinan, 2 Caretaker. All from 3 win streaks except the second Caretaker that was from the final rewards (top 50 or so).
The thing with the odds is that there are so minuscule in every tier of boxes, with a small variation from tier to tier I'm sure, that you are better opening hundreds of bottom tier boxes than 1 top tier. That's why so many people report legendaries from minor streaks, and so few from the top tier boxes from finishing at the top.
Well its not just since recently that winning a gauntlet mostly ends up getting worthless stuff.
Using dilithium or merits to win a gauntlet, just because you hope u ll get the Legendary, is a huge waste of ressources imho.
All my gauntlet legendaries i got from the first 3 or 6 streak win boxes, so the boxes with the lowest drop rate. All my several gauntlet wins and top rankings always got me crap. So i learned my lesson. I spend zero dilithium on gauntlet and only a few merits for refreshes. Thats it.
Preach. Even though the drop chance is lower with the Gauntlet Boxes from short streaks, you can get so many more of them over the course of a gauntlet that they end up being a much better way to get the gauntlet legendary than hoping one drops from the handful of Vaults or Chests won with a high rank.
A solution is giving Guinan at 25000 rounds and Caretaker at 30000.
PS Leonardo is similar to Banjoman.
Not even remotely. Caretaker is the single most dominant crew in the game. Nobody even comes close to what he provides.
DB should provide additional ways to get retired Gauntlet crew. The achievement is probably the most reasonable way but I'd be open to other ways.
The Caretaker is really dominant but there are a few others that are 20ish% better than their nearest competitor for a skill combo in the gauntlet. Without the spreadsheet I can’t list all of them but I bet Locutus is now among that group with his buffed DIP and SCI proficiencies. I think part of it is that more people have The Caretaker than some of the other gauntlet powerhouse crew, so it is more noticeable.
Noticed a few sharing what they've received from the Gauntlet and where they are so far as rounds played. Currently I'm over 20k rounds and have had 4 Guinan, 2 Caretaker and 1 Locutus drop. Didnt want anybody thinking I'd not put in enough effort to talk about the struggle. Its real.

That’s a great point. Rounds are really the only variable that matter, once you’ve got competitive crew, so # of gold rewards reported vs rounds played is really helpful. For me, 6153 rounds with two drops.
If enough people share that information we can actually begin to get a rough estimate of drop rate.

Locutus is a really strong gauntlet crew in general but he's not really comparable with the Caretaker. There are comparable Gauntlet crew to Locutus. Gowron, for example, is generally worse than Locutus but he still has an exceptional DIP roll and somewhat different traits which make him a very viable choice sometimes.
Caretaker on the other hand has an exotic skill combo, a variety of traits and utterly dominates the ENG rolls. His only real competitor is LaBorge and that's only because Beorgi often gets 45/65% gauntlets.

I hadn’t thought of traits. Musician does seem to come up fairly often and, other than Tempted Data and his low minimum proficiency, I can’t think of any other gauntlet engineers with that trait. That certainly widens the gap from time to time.

+87 on the OCCASIONAL use of Merits to refresh. If a 3 or 6 Loot Box is next, MAYBE consider ONE Refresh, to try and get away from a Wall of Fail.

One of each except Locutus, always within the first week they're released. I don't spend dil on Gauntlet because that's pure stupidity and I don't spend more than a half dozen merit refreshes per gauntlet because more than that is also pure stupidity. Rank 1 is a flame and you're the moth.
I rarely do gauntlet. Achievement window says I've done 5466 gauntlet rounds and I've been around and active for much longer than gauntlet has existed. I've gone months without doing a single fight in there before.
3 Locutus from Gauntlet, 4th from Achievement a few weeks ago, 5th Cited at same time
2 Guinan
6 Caretaker – airlocked 1
1 Armus so far
Never ever spend dils on Gauntlet, unfortunately forced to spend merits a few times a week. Still positive net gain though, so it's worth it for achieving 1st-3rd every time.

The one thing about The Gauntlet and all these forum threads reporting on Gauntlet characters is that the game seems to segregate folks into two camps: those who never get the Gauntlet character, and those drowning in Gauntlet characters. It makes me wonder, but you rarely see people post that they only have a single Gauntlet crew. Like maybe our DBIDs work like Minecraft seed numbers, and there are just certain DBIDs that have Gauntlet crew biomes closer to spawn.
Since Day 1 of the Gauntlet's existence, I only have gotten 1 - Caretaker. That's it. So I guess I'm one.

For me almost the same, I got 2x Caretaker and that's it.

Locutus was before my time.
2 Caretaker
1 Armus
None were from rank drops at the end, iirc all were from short streaks.
Locutus was before my time as well. I started playing, didn’t like it, then came back around the Borg Mega.
Guinan 1/5 - Streak.
Caretaker 3/5 - Streaks.
Armus 1/5 - 14th place chest.

For voyages Leonardo is similar. For gauntlet he is indeed dominant.
