What is more fun than using a citation?

Prime LorcaPrime Lorca ✭✭✭✭✭
The question popped up in the course of a conversation: What is more fun than spending a legendary citation?

Besides the obvious "spending two (or more) legendary citations" @Banjo1012 and I came up with a short list:

- A personal best in an event type
- Top 25 in an event
- Two or more legendaries in a 10x pull
- Getting a Tuesday legendary before you run out of dilithium

I think I left one out. But anyway, what brightens your day in the game more than using a legendary citation?

I also don't buy Tuesday packs (rare exceptions). But getting in the top 25 of an event is essentially an extra star and an accomplishment, even though I've done it before. :) (Just my opinion.)

The one you left out was even if you have them all immortalized it’s still pretty cool when a gauntlet character pops up in a loot box. Even if you don’t win the event, just going for it is a pretty big thrill
  • A new / useful 4 star card (or even a 5 star!) From a merit pull

    This.

Hitting jackpot on dabo. I've done it once so far.
Getting a begold in a standard 10x pull when you are keeping your credits in check.

If I am honest tho legendary citation is more like a timer reset button, like the old school days when you didn't do a task properly and the teacher says in his best military authoritarian voice "Start again!" unless of course it's the fourth one.

For me, it would be the random drop of a 5* card from any of the various sources (10x pack, merit pull, credit pull, gauntlet). It's even better if that drop is a Behold! (cue an overly dramatic reverb sound effect).

This happened last night, and even though Mugato may not get much use for me in the future, it's still awesome to have this happen unexpectedly. B)

I've been thrilled with my 7 top-25 event finishes (including my personal best 5th place), but those have less of a "fun" feeling and more of a "yes / got it / take that, universe!" feeling to them for me. (Although hitting those rank levels is a competition, I don't think of it in terms of beating my fellow players, even though that it what happens. I prefer to think of it as besting-the-game, with all the familiar names just being DB/TP/WPG bots, at least in that moment.)

I am not a bot. I am Spartacus! Wait, I mean Schmallen. I am Schmallen.

Yes!! I don’t spin anymore but when I did I got the gold twice. That was pretty exhilarating

I know I've floated by you a few times in the triple-digit ranges but I have no expectation of doing so when I see you on page 1. When Banjo/Schmallen commits to an event, watch out! :)

Thanks for the good words! I feel that way about Paladin. He doubled my point total once and I came in second! He’s always in the back of my mind when I decide to go for it.

Adding a 5th star with a pull. So good.

I'm happiest when I get a crew member I really dig with stats strong enough to break into my regular rotation of voyage and shuttle crews. I'd have been happy with Niners Ezri even as a 4* Popsicle, but being my #4 Voyager and #2 base SEC means I get to actually use her outside events. I love that.

I'm also excited any time I beat Surak in the Gauntlet. I tend to just keep refreshing until I can bypass him altogether but every now and again I feel froggy and leap. More often than not, it does not go well, which reminds me why I try not to do it at all.

Honestly as a fairly low level player without a massive inventory or loads of chrons, it’s getting science experiments on my first warp.... There have been times I’ve used up ~100 chrons and got none which is rather frustrating..

Absolutely frustrating. I've been there. On M/W/F, I run the cadet mission in the middle of the hardest difficulty to get science experiments. If you haven't gotten there yet, I can help you pick which crew to work on to get there. :)

Ah yes, just checked and there it is, hopefully I’ll be ok but I’ve frozen all my uncommon crew so time for a trip to the vault. I really should pay more attention to the cadet challenge loot.... Thanks for your help :).

And that gives me one more thing that is just as fun as using that legendary citation - talking about something on the forum, then getting advice that makes the game a little easier.

There's some good stuff above. There's three responses that I kind of want to put a little spin on. :)

I have to work to get 50K honour... takes about 3-4 weeks. By the time I have it, i get mild relief of "yay... finally"... and then immediately "eugh... time to start over" when I see my honour drop to 0.

These two were kind of addressed by this one.
The unrealized potential of the honor i’m saving is more exciting to me than buying and using a citation now. I may spend the 50k once in a blue moon, but I want to always be prepared for another “sale of the century”.

Who knows what DB/TP will practically be giving away for honor moving forward? 😉

That's precisely why I said "using a legendary citation" and not "spending 50k honor on a citation." :) I am fortunately in the position where I have a small stash of citations to last me until the next honor sale. I just hope that it's less than a year away.

There's a whole process of deciding who will get citations. That is akin to work, but it's a labor of love for me - trying to see where I will get the most benefit from the citations. But when I actually use them and improve my game - that's when the fun really begins. And there's just a small number of things that I enjoy more in this game. :)

    1. Coming onto the forum on a Friday afternoon and finding out that the upcoming re-run/flashback has a 5* I own (ideally at 4/5 or less).

    2. Getting a 5* in, in any way (freebie, Merit pull, portal pull, Gauntlet, Dabo wheel), that adds a star to one I already own.
2b. Getting Coffee Janeway or Mutated Paris in whatever way and the satisfaction of knowing Evolved Janeway is close to another step up in her evolution (have her 4/5).

    3. Being able to complete another tier in a collection, no matter how poor the tier reward.

Basically, just getting to improve crew I already own brings me a ton of satisfaction ... I mean, the new Saru is fine and all, but he probably won't see a second star for a 1+ year from today (first the portal needs to be updated to include him and then I need to be lucky enough to get him in a behold or another manner!) ... he's one among many ...

In my defense your honor, I was speaking in terms of spending your last citation you have. So the "reset button effect" would still apply as honor would be the only way currently to recoup that ;)

Circumstances are always different for differing players some have a stash of citations others do not. Personally I find it risky to have citations stashed in an inventory that could disappear if not checked regularly.

I see. Different playing styles, so we get our entertainment values in different ways. It's a chore to keep that inventory in check. Since I like keeping the stash, I also have to maintain my inventory. I kind of have a system for that. The replicator ration thing made it a bit easier to manage. But... Spending your last citation? I don't even know what I would do if I didn't have at least one saved back. I would feel naked! :D
