I am kind of disappointed in Gillian Not bad for gauntlet, but people like Seven and Daystrom are way better, but they are 5*s afterall. And her base SCI doesn't even pass 700, it's a let-down.
At least there's no power creep.
This is unfortunate. Taylor is only useful for the gauntlet, her base is too low for shuttles. Horta is beaten out in the gauntlet by the recent 1/5 Will Scarlett everyone got for free . 711 SEC is also too low for shuttles.
Barclay is pretty good at 5/5. But not feasible for people unless they spend loads of money. At 1/5 there's a chance he can make it onto some shuttles, but likely not.

Taylor's probably pretty good for Voyages. A singular character isn't going to be much use for shuttles regardless.
The Horta is a little disappointing. SEC/DIP is appropriate but I thought adding some Engineering would be an interesting addition. She's good at mining and recognizes the importance of technological devices.
Is there a reason Taylor has the starfleet and federation trait? The federation didn’t exist in her time and well she never joined starfleet. Unless I’m missing something

She's joined a Federation research vessels mission at the end of Voyage Home.

She joined a science vessel at the end of ST:IV. She is in that uniform.

Thanks. That means it’s been way too long since I’ve watched that movie. Time to rewatch.

Just because she's on a science vessel doesn't mean she's Starfleet, she could be a civilian. I don't remember her in a cadet uniform.

She joined as a crew member. She would be expected to follow orders.
Edit: She was assigned to the science vessel by starfleet. I had to look it up. Gillian didn’t join the ship, she was assigned to it. Gillian must have been very eager to join starfleet when she arrived which would be why she was assigned to a ship to get caught up on science

ENG would have been a good trait for her. I think MED even more so as she's a caregiver. I think DIP should primary, given the story and its conclusion: DIP/SEC/MED
I had higher hopes when it was announced that she'd be named Mother Horta, recognizing that she's caring for her young, and only fighting because she's caught up defending her babies from the miners. (So she wouldn't be another non-humanoid who DB simplify into a 2-skill SEC primary - because apparently that's the extent of the character of a being and their abilities once attacked and defending themselves.)
Now with only these two skills which I don't feel accurately represent the character, she's not going to be of much use to me, other than being a personal favourite and going on the bridge.

Yes, she was a civilian assigned to a Starfleet vessel.
It never made sense that dr gillian left earth to go off in a science expedition. The whales were her life and she was the only one that had any first hand knowledge of how to deal with humpback whales and what they need and she just abandons them?
Ooh, DB's sensitive lately, the censorship is heavy here.
Agreed...and it wouldn’t be necessary if they could just communicate better and address rather than ignore many of our concerns.
Just look at what Frontier Developments is going with Elite Dangerous. They’ve released a ton of content, mostly free with some premium cosmetic stuff, and are in the process of releasing a major update that addresses various player concerns about balance and other gameplay issues. I may have to pick it up again when the next update is released, just to see what it’s like.
I really hope this week's $9.99 Sunday offer is the Horta so I can FF. If they set the trend of the $9.99 being the threshold character for Faction Events that would be awesome! I keep telling myself:

That's Barclay's spider hand-thing.
