Also, all four of the previous Mega-Event legendary characters have Brutal. That means that anyone who has been playing for a while will have four 4/5 bonus characters, if not better. This is going to be interesting.
If by "interesting" you mean "boatrace to see who can launch the most 4k shuttles in a 4 day span".
Seriously, though #4 shuttle for anyone looking to get T1000 will probably need full bonus crew and a 70-80% pass rate.
As much as Devil in the Dark is a good, classic TOS episode...
I personally think it is ridiculously stupid to have a Horta crew a starship such as the Enterprise-D... It has no fingers, no legs, no means of audible communication. Realistically, the only possible way it could work is for it to be housed in some kind of mechanical suit that facilitates interaction in a humanoid environment... Is this going to be reflected in the image?
What's next, Microbrain from Home Soil? Nanites from Evolution?
Enterprise-D had dolphin crew members.
And the Federation has enough telepaths that communicating with a Horta shouldn't be that difficult, and they could probably figure out some sort of translating hat for it to wear or something.
Again, Enterprise-D had dolphin crew members. If they could make that work, a Horta probably wouldn't be too bad.
Sure you are not thinking of SeaQuest?
"The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself."
I'm actually pretty happy about that. Three of the last four events have had at least a galaxy component. I mean, I'd be happier to get a straight expedition event, but I'll take this.
And three of four somewhere recent were Faction, or part Faction......
It's true.
The difference is that you can passively play a faction event, running shuttles, getting some stuff, at no loss of resources. It's all freebies.
With a galaxy event, you can't. You have to invest resources that would otherwise go to leveling crew to play at all. I usually clear out the thresholds (at least to a certain point) on the basis that I'm getting more out than I'm putting in, even if it happens to be in the form of credits or crew instead of equipment. But because the investment is a lot higher, the ROI is nowhere near as good as for faction events.
Yeah, finishing the Threshold is a much worse ROI than getting MAYBE 20,000-30,000 Points in the Fraction Events.....
Again, we dare not mock the mighty Fraction Event, because everybody gotta love the Fraction Events.......

No, the episode with Dr. Reyga has Geordie giving a tour of the Enterprise, and he says something like "next we'll go to see the dolphins" or something.
"The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual gives further information about the cetaceans aboard Galaxy-class starships, stating they (a mixed group of Bottlenose dolphins and Takaya's whales) are actually crewmembers and form a guidance and navigation consultation team. These cetaceans are elite specialists in navigation, and Starfleet consults them on suggested system upgrades. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints also show several large cetacean tanks within the saucer section. Although the above reference to dolphins in "The Perfect Mate" was written at the request of the manual's co-author Rick Sternbach, it was never revealed in an episode whether or not the cetaceans are crewmembers as stated here."
Although apparently I had the episodes mixed up, there were still dolphin crewmembers.

Factions are my favorite event, largely for the reasons you've laid out here. Mostly because I tend to score better than 1000th without having to burn any dil, as well.
However, I've seen this conversation play out in several "Key Information" threads so I thought I'd help kick it along. Some folks apparently don't have access to the game every few hours, and thus do horribly at Faction events. Some of these same folks feel they can do well enough in Galaxy by burning all their resources when the time allows.
See? Neems gets it.
I like Galaxy Events because I can DO Galaxy Events. We just ain't supposed we like them better. {Last weekend, I was working Saturday. I had LITERALLY less than thirty minutes. managed to get my 30K Points up to 100K, which was good for a lunch break!!!!!}

Can bonus crew double up their bonuses? T'Kuvma with Brutal AND Spiritual? Mirror Phlox with Doctor AND Brutal?
Traits don't give bonuses in faction events like they do in galaxies. The crew gets either 2x bonus (bonus crew) or 3x bonus (featured event crew) and that's it.

Feast or famine. Just had faction/galaxy and faction with few bonus crew. Now we have boat load. Will be interesting. Also probably all four and five crew shuttles. Unless they are try to give new players a chance to get threshold rewards.

To sum it up
Galaxy = halt crew progression and spend money/resources to do it
Faction = accelerated crew progression (because of the faction item drops) and costs nothing but a few minutes of time.
With having much of the needed items prefarmed (+Chrons saved up) the Galaxy events don´t eat too many resources really to make it Top 1000. Further advantage: When you are busy and would, say, miss the first 2 days of a Faction event you can forget to be competive. Not so in an Galaxy event.
You could play it in the final hours of the last day and in case you have the reserves in the tank still get a nice position and new crew. But yes, if your focus is on levelling and you regard "exchanging" items for crew as waste I see your point. Although you as a veteran player should have strong crew in all skills really...

This is by no means a comment on which is better, but having inventory stocks and saved chrons doesn't mean the event doesn't eat resources. It just means you don't have to acquire them. You've already chosen not to use them on leveling.

This is what it comes down to. Galaxy events are trading items and chrons for crew. Whether that's worth it or not is up to the individual.
And I'd add, there's actually a hidden cost if you're going to stock up on chronitons to compete in a Galaxy Event. Every day that you spend with max chronitons, you sacrifice the 240 you would have received for free. If you stock up for 10 days for a galaxy event, that's 2400 free chronitons that you aren't getting to expend on items.
I get that some people like the format better, and that they have their own good reasons for it. But there's no question that the expense in resources to compete in Galaxy events is higher than it is for any other event type.
I think these bonus traits are a mistake by DB. Spiritual trait would have been enough, it would have added these crew to Barclay and the featured crew:
Apollo
Kai Opaka
Rogue Kai Winn
Sybok
T'Kuvma
Vedek Bareil Antos
Vedek Winn Adami
Not counting rares, that's 8 bonus crew. About the same as this weekend.
Instead we have almost 100 crew to choose from as bonus crew. DB have almost made it not worthwhile buying the featured crew, as you know you'll be able to time boost your way through the event at 4k without them.
You really should look at this Shan. You really have over-egged the pudding in my book.
I like it. It gives newer players the hope of at least reaching threshold. I've never been even halfway before. True that this is my first faction event with three shuttles, but at my current rate, I'll be lucky to hit 100K VP. I'm hoping next week I can get threshold with extra bonus crew. I understand the arguments in favor of Faction events. I hope to someday share them. For now, Galaxy events--even partials--are my only chance of getting the rewards.
Maybe it's a bad move, maybe it's not. What it definitely is, is different.
And I'm all for that. Gotta try new things every now and then, even if some fall flat.

Yes, they eat resources, but at a certain point in the game, also thx to Voyages and the Chrons we get there, prefarming for Galaxy and levelling up crew can go hand in hand. Also by now I have a strong crew in all skills, so I could level up some others, but don´t need 2.
If a crew member doesn´t improve my team, is no fav character of mine or is needed in an event I regard levelling them up also as some kind of "waste" (keeping in mind how many items they "eat"). Also I find Galaxy Events more relaxing than Shuttle Events and with the additional Community Rewards they also have their merit for me.
But as you say to each their own or in the words of Star Trek IDIC
Judging by the comments I think the Horta and Dolphins are going to best buds at 10 Forward as they can commiserate with Guinan about why some crew members always look down at them for their lack of legs and opposible thumbs...
