I found myself top 500 after a day, so decided to stay the course, assuming the gold being Com/Dip/Sec might lessen interest. Having committed, I needed to keep throwing 1:30 boosts at it, and used-up quite a lot of my supply. I did get the top 1500, but it'll be a while before I can try that on such an event again!
I can see why the last events of a mega can be very competitive, specially Skirmish and Faction events. Anyone who played the previous events in the mega already have, for Skirmishes, the highest bonus crew possible, and for Fations, at least one high bonus, plus the trait bonus. So, is a more even playing field.

Skirmish it doesn't matter. Everyone gets the new threshold bonus crew quickly, a lot of players have the repeat crew if it exists, and by week 2 of the mega everyone has the recurring crew.
Faction events the number of bonus crew make the difference. Given how few new costumed crew we got relative to the number in the game, I don't see why that would have mattered here.
My guess is the new ranked 4* meant a lot of players needed to rank high enough to get Human Neelix 4/4. Once you're going for 4/4 the additional effort to try for the 5* is minimal compared to the effort to get the 5* if you only were going for threshold before.
The other factor I would guess is this event has been repeated a couple times. So a number of players had Kira at 1-4/5. Especially with a 2/5 being relatively easier to achieve now, I suspect players pushed to try and get extra copies of the Kira they already owned.

That was my reasoning behind it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to rank, then I remembered that we can get two copies of the legendary now. Getting Kira from 2/5* to 4/5* was too good to pass on it. I guess I wasn't the only one who made that decision.

That's what happened for me. I had her at 2 stars from the previous rerun, got a third star on Saturday morning from a begold, and decided to push to get the final two stars. Finished at 720, so I just snuck in there.
This is probably a humble brag, but I didn't think it was that competitive. I was surprised at how relatively easy it was to get into the Top 100, something that I've not been able to do since they changed the reward structure. While I used a lot of resources, I didn't empty the tank (though I won't be using 5* reducers anytime soon). My bet is it was, as previously said, people were mainly trying to get Human Neelix but, after that, since Kira has been around awhile, everyone was just trying to rank to get a certain amount of stars for her. So the higher the rank, the less competitive it got (relatively).
Though I was watching who won the event and that placement changed in the last hour or two. That's got to be annoying.
