I ended "First Impressions" with a 4/4 Reinforcement Stamets, so I'm in the camp that didn't need any more of him. I'm also in the camp that's perfectly fine with that. It's one less crew member for me to make room for and commit to equipping and leveling. I'll also get some Honor out of him each month. I'm cool with that.
I love the character, and it pleases me to think that new players who also dig him will have the chance to start off with him in their crews. He could be someone's first 4/4 and that could be really cool for them. I dig that.
A few weeks ago, I started tracking my use of each crew member, to see who can safely go into the freezer if needed. In that time, I've sent Reinforcement Stamets on 25 shuttle runs (not counting event shuttles), 1 voyage, and used him in two events. I'm confident he'll be useful to others.
I would think newer players would be more excited to get the awesome Lt. Saavik. But Stamets is fine, I really don't expect anyone I need from the monthly rewards anyway.
Yes. She is awesome. She can't crit all the cadet nodes, but she can pass them all as command and science. She saves crew spots. I have been fortunate enough to have her FFFE this past month.
I have him FF, I never expect the monthly reward to be anyone I don't have FF already anyway.
So even though this is the case, I think he is a good monthly reward because he is a good SCI character and a lot of people could use some strong SCI who are either new players or weren't able to get him FF'd in the event.

Was just thinking that too. Not sure I've ever seen Bev eat Gagh.
I have Staments FF and I'm okay with him being featured again and getting honor for the reward. Even though he was a threshold reward in Galaxy, and thus easy to FF, not everyone has, including players who were new at the time & still trying to figure things out, galaxy-shunners, simi-casual players, people who had RL comittments, etc. Plus, new players have always been able to get the most out of the daily bonus crew anyway.
This will make 8 months now that I don't care about the crew. Kind of disappointing since I used to get really excited about the new crew. On the other hand, it does mean that my crew is much deeper and I'm more likely to have this happen.
Still, I think DB could have come up with someone who had been pack only instead.
I have found the free Bridge Officer Troi and Drone Seven of Nine very useful as a starting player, a nice Med, then Eng, now Sci. I do have Stamets FFFE so it's debatable if I need two of him (lol) but he's a really solid Sci 4* for new players. I use him quite a lot on shuttles and in events as he is my top Sci card and has a nice secondary Sec which can come in handy.
Saying that, I do think daily rewards in general could be spiced up and giving out new cards would be a great way to keep people logging in. It's sort of exciting working towards new things and real rewards. I guess as time goes on they'll be even less exciting, but it's certainly part of the hook for newer players.

Admiral of the Haus of GaghGagh, Starbase level 94, we are not accepting members at this time.
Captain of the voyage vessels: Queen of Bashir, Landsknecht, and Sunspear, the first luxury starship cruiseliners.
Amenities include wifi, fully-functioning holodecks, a full-service bar, 3 party decks, a Trill spa, and a business centre.
Fun fact: The ships are propelled by bouncy castle technology.
I'm not upset by it, I will benefit from it as I currently have him at 2/4 so I'll enjoy the 2 stars and the free honor. With that said, I don't think DB should be giving threshold rewards as a monthly reward some people spend money on those packs. They should give out cards haven't been featured in events as those are probably the hardest to FF as you need RNG from packs or use citations once you get them in a pack.
Or why not just feature a new 4* character as part of the daily rewards - win win -- benefits the new players while also giving the older players something to benefit out of an otherwise mostly worthless daily reward system.
I guess I should have waited a day or two before getting a citation to finish off Stamets. Live and learn.
It's generally worth waiting a day or two if you're that close to finding out who the next daily freebie will be. Also worth waiting before making a crew dismissal decision if you've got a 3* or a 4* you're considering 86-ing.

Players who buy packs are doing it for the immediate advantage of being able to FF them and use them in that event, not because there's some implicit promise that those cards will remain sacrosanct. There's a peculiar attitude among a lot of forum posters that expects economics to remain static once they make a transaction, and I can't make sense of why anyone would have that expectation. Things go on sale. They get a wide release. They depreciate. They get surpassed by a newer, shinier, better model. There's no reason Timelines should be exempt from those market forces.
As regarding what kind of 4* the Daily Reward "ought" to be, I still feel that the most prudent system would be to introduce a new card that way, and then put them into general circulation via packs the month after the last card is offered free. Failing that, I kinda like the Daily Reward 4* being a crew member who has featured in an event already, because it gives those newer players who got them but weren't able to FF them the chance to get the last stars they need. In this thread already, we've heard from a few players happy to get to finish their Reinforcement Stamets from October. I like that they get that chance. I don't need stars on any event 4*'s myself anymore, but I remember when I did and I'd have been happier to finish fusing them than I would have been about having them still incomplete AND taking on a new 4* that would tie up a crew slot for four months.
I shouldn't care anymore, but the pure stupidity of choosing cards that were just in an event (especially a galaxy) just bothers me. Every active player in the entire game already has at least one copy. It shouldn't be this difficult.

That's why it's a good choice, as already affirmed by some of the forum members who have chimed in in this thread already.

You lost me. The 4th month (and probably more for most) is a total waste. A character that fewer players have would unquestionably be a better choice.
What would be good is i they would change the 4* monthly rather than 4 months, to allow that extra * of event crew rewards over the last half a dozen or so events (those that were without community rewards), where I keep getting stuck with 3/4 * crew, as that was all that was available as rewards. Giving away those extra 4* to FF those event crew would be great!
A shame, still I've got a tonne of 4* crew who could use an extra star and theres even more in the game I dont even own yet so hopefully next month will be better (last couple of months were no good though).

Stamets will be the 4* for the next four months. You won't see a new 4* until May.

Except for new players who would then end up with more 1/4s which is not helpful.
Giving away a full 4/4 is hugely important for new players. Especially F2P players. Those initial 4/4 crew were my best crew for a long time. That shouldn't change. It shouldn't be that difficult to find a crew that was pack only and released 6+ months earlier and offer that crew.

Thing is, I'm not upset that Stamets is the character since that will help some folks work through future Discovery events.
But to your point, and taking it a step further, Gabriel Bell would have been an interesting choice
I just realized, I never get the bottom 4* any way. Miss too many days a month, because of Library schedule and such......
You know, it rather surprises me that DB doesn't follow suit with so many other games, and allow catching up missed dailies with dil.
That said, somebody who has to get internet from a free public location is not exactly their target audience, nor really of any concern to them. Not to offend you, just to clarify their profit motives.

"The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself."
Yeah... I'm not a fan of reusing recent event characters. There's no variety that way. I think this is the third time the monthly has been an event reuse: Drone Seven, BO Troi, and now Stamets. I think all three were community rewards at some point too, so everyone has already had a "free."
Making the monthly 4* an exclusive reward for logging in has been something that I and a lot of others have been asking for since the damn near beginning of the game. But, as time and experience shows, DB prefers the exclusives to be only had through RNG (see gauntlet and voyages).
Since they seemingly want to only use event characters as the monthly now, it would be nice if it were at least one that featured in an event where only 3 copies were available. Galaxy/galaxy hybrid event characters are more likely to be FF by all.
