As someone obsessed with nature and misunderstood creatures, when I saw "Horta" my first thought "YAY!!!" immediately withered to "They're going to ruin the art and skill set just like the Giant Tardigrade. "
I'm going to swing for the fences in my prediction of event bonus crew..
I'm predicting.......
Wait for it...
The Original 3 musketeers, Kirk, Spock & McCoy.
(If not McCoy, then Crusher)
Kirk and Taylor had a connection
Spock made a connection with the Horta
And McCoy.. would make more sense in this coming event then the one that's running now.
He'd be fascinated by the Barclays proto metamorphosis T Cell Syndrome.
That's my call..
Looking forward to it.
Dangit, Jim!!! I'm a doctor, not a brick-layer!!!

An event such as this with only 3 variants of Barclay, Shan can you please tell us sooner rather than later if particular trait(s) will give bonus, so we can level or unfreeze crew that are applicable? Thanks.
I'm actually pretty happy about that. Three of the last four events have had at least a galaxy component. I mean, I'd be happier to get a straight expedition event, but I'll take this.
And three of four somewhere recent were Faction, or part Faction......

I'm looking forward to Gillian, hopefully she'll have decent stats.
I'm expecting SCI primary, MED secondary, DIP tertiary. Even if it is not a MEd prime like I continue to hope for week after week, a SCI prime is nice as I always need more strong SCI.
I just hope her SCI will be top notch, maybe (here's hoping) she'll be our first 4-star SCI with the base over 900.
Perhaps Jazz Musician Riker could be playing music for the Horta and her young to soothe them in their troubled time?
If anything I admire your persistence.
Admiral of the Haus of GaghGagh, Starbase level 94, we are not accepting members at this time.
Captain of the voyage vessels: Queen of Bashir, Landsknecht, and Sunspear, the first luxury starship cruiseliners.
Amenities include wifi, fully-functioning holodecks, a full-service bar, 3 party decks, a Trill spa, and a business centre.
Fun fact: The ships are propelled by bouncy castle technology.
I'm looking forward to Gillian, hopefully she'll have decent stats.

I'm thinking Spock for a bonus. He mind-melded with both the Horta and Gracie the whale. He has the exobiology trait. And he did a little too much LDS back in the '60's. Perfect fit.
As much as Devil in the Dark is a good, classic TOS episode...
I personally think it is ridiculously stupid to have a Horta crew a starship such as the Enterprise-D... It has no fingers, no legs, no means of audible communication. Realistically, the only possible way it could work is for it to be housed in some kind of mechanical suit that facilitates interaction in a humanoid environment... Is this going to be reflected in the image?
What's next, Microbrain from Home Soil? Nanites from Evolution?

Put it in a carrying case and Spock melds with it?
I've never noticed this before today, but a sizeable chunk of the playerbase must use Memory Alpha. On today's trending topics top 5 - Gillian Taylor, Horta, and TNG: Genesis.
Yarnek, Salt Creature, Gorn Captain, 23rd Century Martok, Proto-Worf, Laas and Ripper as bonus crew. Might be a few I'm missing.
Laas, a monster? Sounds like we need another DS9 episode on racism against changelings.
And 23C Martok isn't a monster, he's more like a sentient potato grafted on to a humanoid neck... On second thought, that does sound like a monster. Carry on.

Enterprise-D had dolphin crew members.
And the Federation has enough telepaths that communicating with a Horta shouldn't be that difficult, and they could probably figure out some sort of translating hat for it to wear or something.
Again, Enterprise-D had dolphin crew members. If they could make that work, a Horta probably wouldn't be too bad.

It was only a matter of time before the Horta Haters came out (or woke up)... OK Black Pebble, now is the time to make another snippy Horchata remark... I can take it like a real Horta... 🤗
OK, now to serious mode (or as serious as a discussion about imaginary creatures in an imaginary future can be). I agree about the encounter suit a la Babylon 5 Vorlons or even the ones Dolphins 🐬 (yeah not whales) use in Larry Niven’s Ringworld books...
However, we may be underestimating the ability to do fine manipulation of the Horta especially now that first contact has been made. We know that a Horta could disconnect and remove a vital pump and then move and hide said pump without damaging it or the machinery around it (burned hole in the casing notwithstanding). This suggests some form of fine motor skills we didn’t see in the episode (all those little tentacles we see around the base maybe).
We also don’t know that they can’t find a way to communicate without a full encounter suit or burning “No Kill I” into the deck of the ship. If they have the ability to do fine motor skills or even have some non vocal means to communicate amongst themselves (which they obviously must have as they are not telepathic), it shouldn’t be hard to rig up a communications translator. I mean we can do it TODAY for Stephan Hawking so it’s not that far a stretch.
So let’s not force the Hortas into cramped encounter suits breathing recycled air prematurely. They can get around fine without legs although some ladders and stuff may be difficult... maybe rig up some antigravity belt if they need one like Spock when Kirk went mountain climbing...
PS: I imagine that picture I posted earlier with the Horta on the captains chair is him (her) getting a feel for it and dreaming... “someday... if I work real hard... someday”.

And, regarding fine motor skills, I've always believed the Horta have a form of telekinesis, and telepathy for communication.
Given everything else we've seen in Trek, Horta crew isn't that outlandish.

Nothing bad about it for some people. But, not all of worship the Faction Throne......
I don't even "worship" Factions, just hate galaxies... I'd take another Expedition over a Galaxy for sure
Is this the Faction Throne you speak of?
Actually, they could release Lizard Janeway here :P

Ummm... You mean like the Graduation Burnham we just got?
She's 884 without Starbase bonuses.

It'll be something. As it stands, I believe this would be the smallest event crew for any event if they don't augment it with something.

Dude can turn himself into a Fish from Outer Space. That's a bit monster-ish.
But monster has connotations of mindlessness/primitiveness as well as inherent scariness and usually dangerous.
Laas is just a guy who can shapeshift. He was an unpleasant guy, but still just a guy.
Was Odo also a monster?
