To hopefully put a bow on this, or more likely another log on the fire, the last 20 or so comments have been enlightening, and while not overtly stated by myself earlier, I did drop a few Easter eggs in my earlier posts that were intended to give the keen eye a clue that I was aware of the bigger picture now being discussed openly, and why I've tried (and not always succeeded) in framing the arguments I've made here to center around the idea of "optics". It has been tough at times to separate the optics argument from the "player" since it is precisely one player who is causing the recent optics problem, but I have tried.
I've messaged with @eXo | SilverRose and @Paladin 27 in the past, and I deem both to be exceptional human beings and obviously top shelf STT players. Like any player with even a modicum of self-awareness, I figured out pretty early on that the handful of players on their level are the giant trees around which all the rest of us grow, and we only get sunlight when they allow it - by this I mean, they could strangle the life out of the leaderboard EVERY week if they chose to do so. But they didn't do that. Yes, occasionally they make a run in an event and on those weeks people could take one look at the leaderboard and say, "Well, I'm not winning this week, maybe I'll try next time."
That was a symbiotic relationship, and I have a ton of respect for them and the other top players who cultivated that relationship with the community; they got the light they needed, and were benevolent to let the rest of us get some light too. That relationship allowed players like myself and many others to continue to push, and try, and work, and plan, and strategize, and all of rest of it to get better. I am where I am today because those big players allowed it to happen, and for that I am thankful, and their efforts allowed the community to continue to grow under their branches.
We had hope.
But the optics have changed. I knew on day 1 of an event back then that if I saw Paladin or Silver on a leaderboard that I should save my resources for another week, but that other week WOULD happen, because after they won they'd take a break. But this one player has no chill, takes no breaks, chases down all challengers, and does it EVERY Faction event. The old system worked because we knew the next event would be different. This new normal is broken because we know next event will be the exact same, an event where the same person is going to extend his branches to cover the entire forest and choke the life out of everything.
What does this incessantly long and unnecessary post contribute, other than sour grapes?
Who are you again?
Um, be cool, @Dirk Gunderson . Lord knows I have tried to be cool in this thread, but I probably failed. Whatever.
To the company:
1. Delete the achievement for finishing first in an event. It’s obviously out of reach for most of us, so it’s just an annoyance.
2. Stop selling stuff for event placements. You are alienating a large portion of your player base. Not everyone can spend $10/week.
3. For pity’s sake, fix in-game chat so that we can discuss these things there & avoid bothering you here.
4. Finally, please follow up on the many, many, many requested QoL improvements. Seriously, you have ignored our requests for far too long. It borders on contempt for those of us who have supported your company for years.

I can now reveal I was not being serious regarding my claim to be the most successful player, rather I was interested in which players success is celebrated in this community and which are not. The players most celebrated are Paladin27 (Discord) and SilverRose (Discord), and the players who have equal or more event wins than these players that were not mentioned are MECHAlobe (Line), Ruffrider (Line) and IData (Line). As I said the discussion on who is the best is not serious, but not to even include MECHAlobe who is on 10 event wins, and this entire thread is criticising for being too successful is remarkable.
Further, two whole threads accusing IData of cheating back in his glory days existed, I've had a thread dedicated to me apparently cheating too, MECHALobe has a thread dedicated to inciting harassment (ie this one). This is not true for any of the discord players. I also noticed the key contributors in here defending harassment are on discord.
Based on the disparity between how line players have been treated, and how their achievements have been acknowledged, and who has been harassing him (all the DMs he's received are from people on discord) I'm prepared to withdraw the suggestion that MECHAlobe is being unfairly treated, and replace with elements of the discord community systematically and with malicious intent harass and make entire threads to attack successful players not in their community, and celebrate members of their own community for exactly the same behaviour (please count the number of event wins and ftm SilverRose and Paladin27 have if you don't believe me). Please remember I'm in discord so I can see all the insults labelled against line players just for using this communication app. Also I'd refer people back to the post about KM not contributing to their community.
And to be clear I'm not saying this is all of discord, this is a specific group of players within it. But if this continues the risk is to deepen this divide between players in different communities. Also since KM is friendly with so many fleets that primarily communicate on discord, the risk is also to deepen the divide within communities too especially when certain admirals are calling other admirals secretaries and do 'favours' to win events. Remarkably reckless given, yes, MECHAlobe would forward any requests he receives to not play an event to me.
Eh, I get plenty of hate for what I've done or left off the list entirely - but I'm also banned from the discord community he's talking about. 🤷♀️
But the forum people are the best, clearly. I accept your praise and compliments. 🤣
I really don't understand why people continue to be horrible to each other or nasty about successes. We should be working to lift each other up and celebrate achievements across the board. It's a game.
[sarcasm]Well done Rowden, you sifted through all the text and correctly identified that this is in fact a "line" vs "discord" argument. I am truly awestruck! [/sarcasm]
To be honest, I've never read anything of that kind on Discord (not in the time frames when I'm online at least) and I have a hard time believing that the Discord community would behave that way, as it's one of the most civil online communities I've ever seen.
To clarify, I'm on Discord and follow the discussions on there but I rarely participate in any of them, so I don't really consider myself a part of that community. I write a lot on the forums, but I don't really consider myself a part of this community either, because I've never really bonded with anyone here. I say this because I don't think I have anything to gain by defending one part or another.
I think almost every player who's ever won an event got their share of accusations and bullying attempts (which I'm not defending) in part out of envy and in part because newer and more casual players often can't believe the amount of time or money others are willing to invest in this game. They also don't realize how many resources a player can accumulate by playing for 3 or 4 years and saving them up.
That being said, there are probably more people reading the conversations on Discord and on the forums than on Line, so anyone who is active on Discord and the forums and shares useful tips and information on there will be more popular than someone who isn't.
@Emperor Borg Drone last time I won a faction event, I was sent screenshots of the STT discord chat making disparaging comments about me and lighting my money on fire. So, that's just plain wrong. Again, I'm not in that chat, so it's possible they feel more empowered to talk poorly about players who aren't present.
Honestly, for me who has yet to reach Top 1500, I just can't get too invested. By the time it would matter for me, the top will likely look very different. People quit. People get banned. People die or get sick. People reprioritize. The game gets changed.
At least his spending habits make me feel better about my $100 a month! Every new milestone I have reached for events has been a Skirmish. I might reach it for other types/combinations in time, but it is always Skimish first. I **tsk tsk** at faction. it was my final type to clear thresholds, besides Expeditions. I'm getting better with a better roster, four shuttles, better strategy/discipline,... but I will never win a faction or come close.
Cheating is an issue always, but is it cheating when the game is designed that way? He pays; he wins. I have no understanding of the appeal rationally, but that is his business. With those resources, I would think he places high in other events, but does he? I'm curious mostly. I did get an anthropology degree for a reason.
People do everything for a reason, a rational or an irrational one. What is his? There isn't much of one game wise. He got the achievement. The 5* is not THAT important. He could finish lower and cite for much less. I can think of only a couple reasons and they don't really have much to do with the game. It feels more like ego or attention seeking to me. Either he wants to be seen as a great player and this is his method or he likes causing an uproar. If it is option two, he succeeded. If it is option one, he knows we are questioning.
My conclusion - We let this thread die, focus on other things a while, and completely ignore it if he wins again. No attention. No thread. No messages. If he continues, it's some other reason we haven't figured out.

Well that's interesting. To my knowledge, Dirk, peregrine, Bylo, and Banjo are not part of the Discord community. It's possible though, since I only post there maybe once a month. Not sure who else you might be referring to.
For my part, I was out of line to suggest that you were someone's secretary. It was a very poor way of asking how you had knowledge of another player's PM's. I'm sorry for suggesting that you performed clerical duties for another player.
I find myself questioning your motivations of pitting the Line community against the Discord community as you have done. Of the players you listed, I've seen Silver, Paladin, and Ruff Rider on the forum, though it has been some time since I've seen Ruff Rider. I think your analysis failed to take that into account. Maybe instead of making this issue a wedge to drive two communities apart, maybe we can open a dialogue to keep the two communities together. Clearly there is room for improvement if you feel this way.
There is an obvious lack of communication between the two communities for the obvious reason of using different communication platforms. We can use the forum as a bridge.
If you're willing, we can start with the "gatekeeper" issue. You seem to be closer to Mechalobe than I suspected. Can you tell us his motivation for winning so many faction events? Is it personal achievement? Fleet pride? A cure for boredom every several weeks?

Bylo Band isn't in discord? It's stupid to lie when I can literally search who is and is not in particular chats.
As for Peregrine, I was not referring to him in what I wrote, but you can't say he's not part of the community. I've literally sent him a message in that chat before.

I had no idea. I've never seen anything like that, but I live in Europe, so maybe I'm not awake/online when these things happen.
But if you both say it's happening then I believe you.
For what it’s worth, I have a Discord account that I created for running a fleet chat server but our fleet has shrunk so much that the last message on there was from January 2019 and I had offloaded the app from my phone sometime thereafter. The forum is more than enough for me to keep up with on a daily basis - I finally got on Reddit and even then only occasionally lurk in the Timelines section...all of my Reddit time is spent in the Daystrom Institute satisfying my deepest nerd desires for discussion of in-universe stuff we don’t necessarily see on screen.
Although that leads to another observation: other than a few people who cross over from one community to the other, it seems to me like there is a huge disconnect between the forum community, the Discord community, the Line community, and the Reddit community. Until now, I hadn’t really heard much about toxicity in any one specifically directed to any other one...if that really is the case, it’s quite sad.

I left the STT Discord server a few months ago, but I do confirm that I used to be a member there, so this is accurate. I am still debating whether or not to d/l “Candy Crush Saga”, though, as you so helpfully suggested to me.
Yep, time to let this thread expire. All we are doing now is deepening divisions. I’m done.

But is he? This could be another test. We may have to wait until tomorrow for him to reveal is true motivation.
That particular issue is your honesty. You are saying you only visit discord once a month as an excuse to spread misinformation when you are joint Admiral of 10F, which recruitment page directs you to discord chat for interview with your signature. So how can it be you visit once a month? Also, how can it be a fleets Admiral, whose fleets primary chat is on discord, does not have easy access to check things before posting?

More miscommunication, it seems. You were talking about wider communities, so I assumed that you meant the Timelines Discord server and not my fleet's Discord server. My fleet's Discord server is glorious. It occupies me to the point that I do not post in the wider community often. Generally only when tagged or if I can help with the Timelines wiki when I see inaccurate or missing info.
While I could indeed look things up, I thought that I knew the answer without looking. Once again, you have identified another of my flaws.
As others have indicated, I think we can be done here. However, if I can clarify any other miscommunications, please let me know. I am at your service.
1) Everyone should stop being awful to each other and sending nasty messages. Period. Point blank. We're a community - spread across various platforms - but a community around this game nonetheless. It's time to start acting like it. I've actually seen some of the PMs that MECH was sent (and I'm not in KM - I just know people) and they're horrible. I've been sent horrible, nasty, sexist PMs in game and over many platforms. It's just not a community or Star Trek spirit and we're all responsible for stamping it out.
2) No one has the right to dictate how someone else spends their money. MECH's wallet is his to use on faction events, mine is mine to use on the next new shiny character that DB forgets to put in packs, yours is yours etc. We all have different lifestyles and priorities. I'm personally spending a lot less on the game now because things like this are kind of souring it for me in a lot of ways.
3) Spending money is how the game is structured. It's not cheating if it's coloring within the lines. DB is here to make a profit, so they are absolutely going to add elements of P2W. If you stockpile for months and want to make a run at an event, it's absolutely possible to rank highly in any event type. If you want to win, based on the mechanisms in place, it's going to be with money for a faction. That's the way it is designed. If you don't like that, that is not an issue with MECH but an an issue with the game.
4) Cheating is cheating and that shouldn't be tolerated.

Is this really the best your publicist could come up with?
It has not died. Alas.
Shame I missed Bylo when I posted this month. But I see that you intend to make it a wedge issue. I'm sorry to hear that.
But is he? This could be another test. We may have to wait until tomorrow for him to reveal is true motivation.
I’m done.
