I can hardly believe that “we’re gonna double down on our mistake” BS that is dripping out here from WRG/TP...”we take it seriously...”....take WHAT seriously????? Your company’s pathetic rationalisations and excuses for their OWN lack of quality control? You put a button in the game that says “Buy” then penalize the player for buying? ....To repeat (ad nauseum) from some many others here...and please listen carefully: IT’S NOT AN EXPLOIT....your company made a mistake. People pushed the button. YOUR FAULT. Blaming the player? Could this be more tone-deaf response?
I'm not sure that I can add too much to what has already been said. Only that this is an overaction, will cause me to play less if at all if not overturned, and again it's very inconsistent considering all the other stuff people actively did to break the game and didn't get nearly as harsh a punishment.
I feel like this is one of the few cases where most of the players are in agreement with that sentiment and that you guys should quickly reverse the bands and maybe if you need to claw back a few constellations so be it. it's better to admit that you're wrong now then just to wait on it before you lose too much more people and completely damaged the environment that has been fostered here
Their window to “unban” closed with the first wave of event shuttles returning. If they unban now, they may as well give every player the rank 1 event rewards. Not only did they screw up the “disciplinary action”. They screwed up the event. They screwed up fleet rewards. They screwed up campaign rewards (premium and basic) They screwed up daily dilithium From the monthly card. All from this single ego trip from someone high up.
This knee jerk reaction was not well thought out and was way over the top. And we all know that a decision for a mass 72 hour ban is not a decision thats made by shan. That decision rises to the level of a product manager.
Nope. I hit it 6 times then reported the problem. Everyone who hit it 20, 50, 100 times knew exactly what they were doing. They knew it was a bug. They assumed they wouldn’t get any punishment. They were wrong.
You know exactly what the button said if you hit it multiple times yourself. It was not an exploit of a glitch by its technical definition. The was a screw up on whomever at TP who allowed that “Buy Again” button to be there by not double checking everything. DB never banned anyone for taking advantage of mess ups on their (DB’s) end because it was on them and not anyone else. Now that TP took over, they are punishing players for having something out in the open that anyone could utilize whether it was supposed to be there or not. I hope TP did not need the millions of dollars they invested into the game by buying it from DB because it is about to go belly up.
First, TP isn’t responsible for how a different company responded to past issues so anyone using those old examples as an excuse is being willfully disingenuous. Secondly, I pressed the buy again button expecting to get the usual pop up with how much it would cost, when I just got a free pack I knew there was a bug. I got some info and posted in engineering. I assumed I’d lose whatever I gained and was fine with it. Then I read ppl got 1000s of isp & constellations and figured there would be blowback. Ppl are upset they are getting hammered for what was clearly exploiting a bug. I just don’t get it.
I am eagerly awaiting the day WRG profit margins drop so low from this debacle that they decide to throw Shan under the bus and fire her. Would love to see Shan take to the forums and expose all the shady WRG dealings that went on behind the scenes that we never heard about.
I'm upset at being banned - buut I would not wish it on anyone that they loose thier job - please can you consider rewording this to be like - would love for Shan to give the inside scoop when she has had enough of WRG's mistreatments
I fail to see how some extra constellations, polestars and IMS, have more of an impact than e.g. Macro Cheaters that affects whole events and the ranking of several other players?
To craft/retrieve crew(and make use of the polestars and constellations)
u need Quantum currency which is limited to 1000 and not obatainable
from the game except for extra dilithium.
So nobody could just retrieve XX amount of legendary crew, which might
have a slight affect on the game balance and revenue.
So please? Where is the severe impact on he game?
And btw you still can remove IMS, Polestars and Constellations(as u did) regardless.
Yes please elaborate on this. How did this effect your revenue orb Income?
You could have just left it after taking all the stuff away from me cause I didn't use it.
But no you ban those people that play your game and pay your checks.
Let's face it this has been half arsed from day 1 and it never changed. There are millions of other problems but you ban those that feed you so to say. You know there's a saying that you don't bite the hand that feeds you? Well you cut off the hand that fed you so don't expect to survive any longer....
Shran, I am completely shocked and dismayed at your actions. I am still not even clear what these new items are and if you want to ban me for 72 hours then do so. This is not players fault but the people that programmed the game and the people delivering the messages. Feel free to look at how much I have spent playing this game since I started in March 2016. If you want to ban me for 72 hours consider it permanent Shran because my days playing will be done. Again, this is your fault and not players fault.
No one exploited a glitch no matter how many times they hit that button. As per the game’s own TOS, no one messed with code or anything on the back end, so banning players for the company’s screw up is in violation of said TOS. A few posts have already posted the TOS in full in regards to this area. TP is in breach of contract with its players and liable for any damages that come from it. Google, Apple, and so forth can provide refunds for this reason alone should those refunds be requested and players are already receiving them even from pain-in-the-butt Apple.
There are three ways to do something; the right way, the wrong way, and the Janeway.
Don't forget to show your displeasure on twitter, @STTimelines
These idiots F up their own game. Players click extra buttons. TP gets pissed off and BANS PLAYERS for 72 hours! Do not walk RUN from this game. These idiots could not find their **tsk tsk**$ with both hands!
Banning players who clicked a button your coders placed in the game has repercussions beyond the players who are being "disciplined". It affects everyone in their Fleet. Three days of missing ISM for the completed Dailies. Reduced Fleet standing in the Event. Fleet Leaders who will lose the VXP they should get for their Shared Crew. Other things not immediately coming to me are highly likely.
THIS. This all of this. It’s hurting our fleet and others right now. It'll hurt a lot more if our affected player(s) leave over it. Who did nothing wrong.
This is absolutely tone deaf and stupid! I would love to know the business logic here. YOU added a janky pack to the game. How do you get to deciding that is the players fault? If YOU give me a free buy now button I'm going to smash that. Why would you not? I didn't manipulate the game or use any kind third party app. I certainly didn't exploit anything. I clicked a button YOU gave me. It absolutely isn't our fault your QC **tsk tsk**.
I'm VIP14. Level 99. Been playing since damn near the beginning. I almost left after you screwed me during the last honor sale. This is nothing but incompetence and greed. Honestly I wasn't even that upset until this post. Now you can get bent.
It's been clearly established that the entire scenario was caused by an error on the company's behalf.
A new feature was added that was quite complex to the degree that it prevented it being carried out without a glitch.
It's not irregular at all to encounter oddities and errors from company communications, features, events, deals, etc. It's so frequent that it's hard to tell what's actually a glitch anymore.
Banning these players though will turn out to be a greater error than any player clicking the Buy Again button more than once. The company's decision is now affecting fleets. It will further impact the game as you will certainly see people stop buying or quit the game altogether.
I believe that if you don't reinstate these players, today will prove to be the inflection point for the end of Timelines.
@Shan Beyond everything others have said, the basis for taking punitive action beyond a clawback of the extra resources gained from multiple claims is nonexistent. A few have hinted at it, but there is no clause in the Terms of Service under which claiming the free offer multiple times could be construed as an exploit, even if those doing so knew for certain it was unintended and did so to gain an advantage.
Simply put, if the Terms of Service are the "governing law" of the game and are binding on players, then nothing in the game's "law" makes it illegal to claim extra resources available through unintended functionality of the Time Portal. That means the decision to ban players for "exploiting" is entirely discretionary and, to use a legal term, arbitrary and capricious, as it is not based on any existing policy expressed in the ToS. It is wrong to enforce a policy that does not exist.
This is an unmitigated disaster and requires an immediate and extreme walkback of the response. It will be embarrassing, but the damage can be reduced. Holding this line is a mistake and it will cost the company more money than a mea culpa going forward.
This was not an exploit. An exploit was an example of the $5 double your crew offer. Once it popped up, you could back out and make a $5 purchase of dilithium. It was specific steps one had to take to avoid paying $25. It was fixed.
Another exploit was when I think I saw you could use the I Am Picard app to get tons of points in an event. Something that was back end and not known. This was pushing a button and it kept giving the pulls. I'm sure people were confused but the wording on packs has been wrong before.
I was not impacted and only heard about the pack today. But I quit for 18 months over the Independence Day Pack and players shouldnt be held responsible for a mistake on the game's end. Take stuff away if needed but punishing players is going to leave a bad mark when revenue was the driving factor of a new game feature. Un ban the players. Split the baby and show that you were not happy, they missed shuttle rounds or voyages, and call it a day.
Look I don’t want to jump on a moral high horse but the responses are dismaying to say the least. Everyone knew it was a one time claim, hitting the buy again button to see if it works is common but come on. Anyone who just spammed that thing knew exactly what they were doing. I have a friend who always puts things on the bottom of his shopping cart bc most of the time the cashier overlooks it. I tell him he’s stealing and he gets defensive. Their mistake he says. Bull. No different here. TP gave away something for free and some ppl saw a way to get more free stuff. Stuff they defend taking by saying they can’t even use anyway. They defend by saying it was TPs fault. Y’all made the choice to click away. I didn’t. Lots of ppl didn’t.
There are obviously issues with the game. Issues with this rollout. Maybe a ban was too far. But y’all been on here bashing the company for a week then exploit an error and then make threats, demand apologies, issue bad reviews. Y’all trying to take the entire game down bc you aren’t happy with the consequences of your own actions.
I play this game bc I love Star Trek. Not just for the sci fi but for the morality of the stories. And here’s a bunch of so called fans acting entitled and amoral. Well technically it wasn’t an exploit, technically it was TPs fault, well technically y’all looked at a please take one sign and went nah imma take it all.
🤦
First, I have been banned
Second, I can’t say much more than what has already been said - in total agreement for just how stupid this decision is.
Third, I’m quitting the game
Fourth. (and the most important) THANK YOU to everyone who quits or stops spending money on this game!!!! The solidarity is much appreciated!!
@Shan
When I clicked the purchase link, I noticed there was a buy again button. Yes, I did click it. My screen flashed and did nothing. After a few attempts, I hit continue and it stayed at the same screen. I now do what I do when my voyage gets stuck. Minimize the window and come back and click. Both options. Continue and buy again. My screen flashes but goes nowhere. After several attempts at this...I close the game and restart. When I come back...it appears that I have not purchased the pack. I do it again, and get stuck. Attempted the same as above, as I can’t get out of the screen. I soon get a tribbles error and get back to my home screen. Good. At this point I check my inventory and see a bunch of constellations. Oh well...they’ll fix whatever went wrong. No worries.
Then I get the message that I am banned.
I don’t agree with that. I did nothing really different than when other issues arise like a stuck voyage. The error isn’t mine. I used no hack. I am penalized for what again? Trying to get my system unstuck?
Unfortunate.
Ppl are upset they are getting hammered for what was clearly exploiting a bug. I just don’t get it.
Before responding, I am not among those banned and only claimed the daily offer after the fix.
If you do not understand the reaction, then you have not read enough of the posts from people explaining their thinking at the time. We were told to "expect surprises," and the pack behavior changed from the previous day. It was reasonable to think it was a bug and also reasonable to think they might just be juicing up enthusiasm for Crew Retrieval.
Either way, it doesn't matter. Regardless of player intent, nothing in the ToS provides a broad catch-all definition for exploiting that many games have for "abuse of game mechanics" or something similar. Only the behavior defined as exploiting in the ToS is supposed to be actionable at all. This simply does not fit what happened today, so there is no basis for punishment based on the developer's own policy governing the game.
This is like banning people for getting free refills at a fast food joint. Did you have a sign up saying to not push the button? Did you issue a warning? This is not the hill for the game to fight on. I also was not banned and am outraged as everyone else.

With all due respect, this is very different than what the macro cheaters did.
Macro cheaters only affect which players get what of the set rewards pool. The devs aren't really losing anything if people cheat their way up the rankings; the cheaters might even inspire honest players to try to spend money to keep up! So unless and until macros started to threaten the cash flow from honest players who figured out the rankings were rigged there wasn't much incentive for DB/TP/WRG to fix it.
This glitch though? This was money out of the dev's pocket. Macros didn't really cost them anything but this did so they won't stand for it!

If your friend put some toilet paper under the grocery cart because there was a sign in the TP aisle that said free toilet paper, and then they got charged with shoplifting with the store saying “what, you think we’d really give away free TP, that sign was an accident!”, would you still be singing the same tune?
I had no idea that this had happened until logging in today. Glitch, bug, exploit doesn’t matter what word one uses. The bottom line is this is what happens when proper testing is not done before rolling out something new. My plant does this time and time again because some overpaid whack job decides they want to increase production without proper testing and the results from the errors caused by that one thing cost tens of thousands of dollars more than proper testing outside of normal production would have. How does this compare to this error in a phone game? Because when the problems happen and they always do, the people trying to produce product or playing the game in this instance are blamed for it not working properly or “doing it wrong”. It would be so nice just once to have someone high up take some actual **tsk tsk***** responsibility and accountability for their own idiotic decision making.
I fail to see how some extra constellations, polestars and IMS, have more of an impact than e.g. Macro Cheaters that affects whole events and the ranking of several other players?

FWIW, they haven't even really monetized the ISM aspect of the game yet. Which makes the harsh, unprecedented reaction all the more mind-boggling.
@Shan I wasn't banned. Nobody in my fleet has been banned.
So i have nothing to gain by asking if this decision to ban can be overturned.
It is excessive and not in the best interests of the entire STT community.
Comsider us warned if you wish but own the mistake and don't take it out on the players.
You've made your point, now make your peace and allow the players affected back. Let's move forward together.
I wish to make another comment on how this arbitrary decision was wrong and players could/should coordinate a class action lawsuit against this company over years of mistakes and letting others get away with much worse issues than this. YOU put this new retrieval out with most of the gamers still trying to understand how it all works. If the retrieval was meant for once a day, then a simple program should have been used only allowing players to retrieve it once a day. This is YOUR fault and you likely caused more issues by taking arbitrary action against gamers. I am approaching my 5th year playing the game, and I encourage you to look at how much I have spent playing the game. And what’s ironic is that your development team can come up with this more complicated aspect of the game but somehow cannot (or just do not want) make it possible for the game to go beyond Captain’s level 99, which I have been at for more than 1 year,
The response to TP's own coding error is a complete error compounded by a further error. The effect on my own fleet is multiple members having been banned for doing what the game *allowed* them to do and the possibility that we will lose important members for "this final straw."
@Shan, we know you are the messenger, not the message creator, but this is a perfect moment to go back in time and erase the unfortunate decisions that have been made.
This pack was announced as being available once per day and displayed a purchase limit of 1. The fact that it was claimable more than once was clearly a bug.
Don't forget to go back in time and ban everyone who claimed 150,000 illicit Honor two Christmases ago. @Shan@WRG Ben
If we can go back in time to save the whales, we should be able to go back in time and reclaim any of our hard-earned cash we've put into this game...
