Truly disappointing to read this official response. I’m no whale, only a campaign buyer for the most part, but if these bans aren’t lifted I can’t in good conscience continue to support WRG/TP. You don’t punish the players for your own (repeated and repeated) mistakes. Our entire fleets will suffer from these bans.
Game of War is now the largest company on the planet. They have used their profit from loot boxes and Kate Upton's face to buy Amazon and Google. Mobile games are the new FAANG stocks. The sector can't go wrong.
"But it can go wrong," the professor starts. "Who here remembers Star Trek: Timelines?"
No hands are raised.
"They had it made. Niche, loyal fan base. Locked in license pricing before Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and all the others were introduced."
The class appears confused. "So, why didn't they knock it out of the park?" a student pipes up.
The professor chuckles. "Well, they had no business sense." He points to a diagram on the holo projector. "Remember the 80/20 rule? Concentrate the effort on the most profitable and engaged people? Well, these guys introduced a new feature with a bug in it. And those players - the most engaged, active, and profitable - who were right there after introduction were the ones who saw the bug."
"So they... stopped playing?" another student ventures. "What does the bug have to do with it?"
"No!" the professor laughed. "They *banned* the most important 20% of the game. For three days."
There's silence in the room.
"But... why? Shouldn't they have realized what they were doing? Shouldn't they have taken responsibility for their actions?"
He shrugs. "I don't know. They never took my class. Maybe they didn't want those people to stick around. To know their shoddy history of quality control and player support. Maybe they just didn't realize what they were doing at the time. Regardless, I'm glad they did. Without New Coke, the Ford Pinto, the Timelines Player Ban, we wouldn't have terrible corporate mistakes to learn from in class."
The janitor quietly slinks away having heard the lecture. He wasn't expecting this lesson today. He remembers the good times - the Kotaku interviews and podcast slots. He remembers the big dreams - the strategy RPG and storytelling. He remembers them turning on him after having stolen his precious constellations and having made him look stupid.
He looks back at the holo projector. 20% of customers can't outshine 80% of ego. He'll have his due one day.
Wait, I don't understand. I saw the button and kept pressing Buy Again, as I thought it was due to the Claim 19 limit. Didn't know I exploited anything, and when it went away I figured I redeemed 19 times.
Kinda weird, and crazy to say someone exploited. We only gained a few 100k fed creds, plus some polestars I still don't know fully how to use. Thought it was too help us understand the new convoluted game play. I was kinda excited after, but concerned about a possible ban, and I spend $ each month in the game.
My last comment and I’ll go back to lurking bc y’all are too much.
TP is NOT responsible for how a different company handled prior exploits.
Truly a shameful day for this forum and player base.
Guess you don’t look at UC that often. UC is often a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I’m outraged and I didn’t get the chance to grab this pack more than once. Now TP is offering a take 19 copies of this pack. If TP can’t put in a limit of 1 correctly, how are they going to put in a limit of 19?
Today made it pretty obvious that the morbid incompetence and venality of your employer extends beyond your programming team and spreads pretty much across the board.
STT was already a “mature” game with a loyal but fairly static player base. By going full ChiCom jackbooted thug on a big chunk of that base, who “exploited” nothing and simply acted on what your programmers made available to everyone, you’re guaranteeing the decline of the game a lot faster.
Because y’all are clearly very basic, let me put this in itty bitty words even you will understand: THIS IS GOING TO COST YOU A LOT OF MONEY NOW AND LATER. That basic enough for you?
I didn’t “exploit” your foul up. I didn’t get banned. Friends (fleetmates) of mine did. I’ve been playing for about 3 years now, you probably got me for a couple grand. I know, not whale spend so who cares? I’m just internally debating whether to mothball my account at the end of the mega or right now. Either way, I was good for $30-40 or so a month, and I’m about to be good for zero.
I am eagerly awaiting the day WRG profit margins drop so low from this debacle that they decide to throw Shan under the bus and fire her. Would love to see Shan take to the forums and expose all the shady WRG dealings that went on behind the scenes that we never heard about.
Is this really necessary? You're calling for Shan to lose her job to satisfy your desire to see the company she works for burn? What is wrong with you?
i just visited the Universal Chatroom and to say emotions were running high is an understatement.
"This pack was announced as being available once per day and displayed a purchase limit of 1. The fact that it was claimable more than once was clearly a bug."
You as the spokesperson admit it was an error on the developers side, yet you punish the players, even the ones who reported this error. Submitting a 3 day ban, excluding many players from an event, a mega event even, is just outrageous. you guys dropped the ball, not us players. Yet we the players are left with an awful impression of how you decide to handle future errors.
Having said that, i would like to submit myself to a ban as well. I too have committed the hidious crime of hitting the buy again button, 6 times in a row.
Despite the fact that the retrieval crew function isnt working for me due to an unknown error, which i dont expect to be resolved anytime soon ( the reply i got as a response to my ticket isnt very positive ),
i demand to be treated equally as many of friends and get the same ban.

While I’m not calling for Shan to be fired, I don’t think Timelines will survive this one.
I'm not going to pretend that after the first couple of clicks I didn't realize that something was wrong. And I continued clicking, and even went and opened some of the constellations just to see what I would get, assuming it would get rolled back and knowing I couldn't actually do anything with it since I was down to 150 quantum and sure as heck wasn't going to spend dilithium.
But to pretend that this is 6x worse than using a macro to cheat my way to the top of the leaderboard during an event is more than a bit shocking. Add to that the fact that TP actually took away ISM I earned legitimately PRIOR to their mistake, and it's enough to make me question if I'm going to log back in 72 hours from now.
I've spent thousands of dollars on this game and have been a huge defender of the company's questionable choices in the past, but with the company doubling down on this decision I think it's safe to say both of those things are over.
I commend you for owning up to your mistake, and admitting that you knew what you were doing was wrong.
Having said that, I hope that we don't lose you. You've added a lot to this game and this forum, and I would be sad to see you go. Please consider that acrion before making any final decision.
Nope. I hit it 6 times then reported the problem. Everyone who hit it 20, 50, 100 times knew exactly what they were doing. They knew it was a bug. They assumed they wouldn’t get any punishment. They were wrong.
You know exactly what the button said if you hit it multiple times yourself. It was not an exploit of a glitch by its technical definition. The was a screw up on whomever at TP who allowed that “Buy Again” button to be there by not double checking everything. DB never banned anyone for taking advantage of mess ups on their (DB’s) end because it was on them and not anyone else. Now that TP took over, they are punishing players for having something out in the open that anyone could utilize whether it was supposed to be there or not. I hope TP did not need the millions of dollars they invested into the game by buying it from DB because it is about to go belly up.
First, TP isn’t responsible for how a different company responded to past issues so anyone using those old examples as an excuse is being willfully disingenuous. Secondly, I pressed the buy again button expecting to get the usual pop up with how much it would cost, when I just got a free pack I knew there was a bug. I got some info and posted in engineering. I assumed I’d lose whatever I gained and was fine with it. Then I read ppl got 1000s of isp & constellations and figured there would be blowback. Ppl are upset they are getting hammered for what was clearly exploiting a bug. I just don’t get it.
Exactly this. There were some that definitely knew what they were doing, and did it anyway. Now they're crying.
Having said that, I definitely do not feel the majority being banned did that, or deserve their ban. This is extremely heavy handed on the part of TP. It's also seemingly counter to their own interests when you consider the fallout of that decision. I don't see the logic in this.

Yarnek.
You know what Yarnek ... I didn’t “exploit” the TP/WRG bug at all (in fairness, didn’t know about it until after the fact). That said, in the words of Captain Spock, “I stand with my shipmates.” I also demand to get the ban.
My friend claimed it 3 times, then stopped and filed a ticket to report the bug. What did she understand that others did not?
Another fleet mate claimed it 60 times; when they mentioned this in chat, several of us encouraged them to file a ticket because we suspected there would be this kind of fallout.
A third fleet mate pushed it 17 times before deciding something was wrong, and wasn't penalized. I can only assume the people who were banned made an egregious number of claims. I was mistaken here; he did it twice. Striking it out rather than deleting.
The problem with doing nothing or just taking back gains from a bug or exploit is that it creates moral hazard for the next bug or exploit; if there's no danger of penalty, then there's nothing to stop people from deliberately cheating every time a new exploit appears.

Some definitely saw it as an exploit. But the people who were duplicating dilithium on a regular basis from in game mail didnt get banned.
A very popular player on these forums who utilizes a steam exploit on the “welcome to the game” packages to get the cheapest portal packs available isn’t banned.
So yeah, people are crying because the punishment does not fit the crime.
But its too late for them to roll back the ban. They messed this up bad. The whole event is screwed and if they unban early they are admitting fault and will have to give every player in the game rank 1 rewards from this weeks event.
There is only one way I will continue with this game. An apology and giving me all the rewards (dilithium, voyage rewards, etc...) that I missed due to the ban. I imagine that I should just plan on having a lot more time and money in the very near future...
This kind of reminds of the Dumb and Dumber movie line, "Lloyd, just when I think you can go and do nothing stupider"...
... The problem with doing nothing or just taking back gains from a bug or exploit is that it creates moral hazard for the next bug or exploit; if there's no danger of penalty, then there's nothing to stop people from deliberately cheating every time a new exploit appears.
I appreciate the moral absolutism. Here’s IMHO a better idea: is it too much to ask for new features to be ... what word am I reaching for here? Ah. Yes ... TESTED by the devs and programmers before letting them into the wild?
This is the equivalent of finding a $20 bill on an empty deserted street. The responsibility lies with the loser vice the finder. Again, we’re apparently dealing with very basic and greedy people, so the lesson will likely be lost on them.
This game was so much better back when Disruptor Beam owned it, Customer Service was so much better. Every time there seem to be a technical issue I would get an email explaining what happened and what they were going to do to redeem the situation. I remember there was an issue where I opened up my game and had 20 legacy citations in my inventory that I did not have whatsoever. I don’t know where they came from, but I reported it to them and they thanked me and told me not to worry about it. Because I did nothing wrong all I did was play the game. Now I’m being punished for just doing what I did before. I just play the game. I’m on my lunch break I hit the clean button to see buy again button figured that must be a new option and I bought again. Then I go back to work come home, and say I’ve been banned for 72 hours. No explanation or email. I had to come on here to find out what was going on. It’s just frustrating as someone who’s played this game since the beginning, and who spends plenty of money on it, to be surprised by a 72 hour ban without any warning. It is also surprising to me how many people I know in my Fleet who have told me they knowingly exploited discouraged when they figured out what it was, and not only have they not been banned but they are also getting a 19 daily packs a day now from this mistake. I just don’t understand. Someone please explain to me why others were allowed to exploit this glitch and Not banned and others were ban. I know of one player who told me he was able to get 40 packs, and I just got an email from him telling me he is still not banned from the game. He’s also been allowed to keep everything. And he told me he knew it was a glitch. So what gives?
I am very disappointed by the disciplinary actions taken here. As a longtime player, I cannot condone what was done to some of my friends today. Many of them did not even realize they were exploiting a mistake until they had already done so. If they are not reinstated, I shall be saying goodbye as well. And that makes me sad.

I got offended by the phrase disciplinary actions. Are they my dad or something?
Every second that goes by is making more and more people upset. They full on dropped the nuclear bomb on the players.
Whoever was in charge of the ban decision was surely the one responsible for the bug that everyone exploited. The whole thing screams ego trip and lack of responsibility.
The problem with doing nothing or just taking back gains from a bug or exploit is that it creates moral hazard for the next bug or exploit; if there's no danger of penalty, then there's nothing to stop people from deliberately cheating every time a new exploit appears.
EDIT: organization
This is an interesting point. The moral hazard issue applies to everyone involved: the players and TP. Yes, players shouldn’t have pushed the buttons more than once. But TP shouldn’t be offering bugged packs (in many retail environments, businesses are required to honor sales due to misprices or a lack of quantity limit enforcement).
Based on what’s happened today, TP can’t be trusted at their word. Do I believe the revised pack will work? No. In fact I’ve heard that it has the same problem.
TP has no incentive to make sure they don’t issue bugged packs, if they can simply ban the players who find out about it.

You Picked really shaky ground to stand on. I think you should back off.
My last comment and I’ll go back to lurking bc y’all are too much.
TP is NOT responsible for how a different company handled prior exploits.
TOS clearly says you agree to arbitration for any claims and agree to not be part of any class action, so good luck with that route.
Lastly, my issue is with the disingenuous nature of the complaints. I looked and i took the first screenshots of the error at 12:03. Took me 2 minutes to realize there was an error and I wasn’t the first to post the glitch but y’all want to claim you thought it was supposed to be that way?!
If one of you posted something like I knew it was a glitch I pressed it 20 times even though I knew that. I expected at worse you’d take away the extra. Please the ban was excessive can you reconsider...maybe I’d be more sympathetic.
But no you want to feign ignorance, claim you are at no fault whatsoever and make demands and threats. I really hope they don’t reconsider. It would be far worse for TP to cave to this mob.
I’ve read every post on multiple threads regarding this and only one guy made anything approaching a reasonable request and even he is claiming his fleet mate only clicked it one extra time.
Truly a shameful day for this forum and player base.
72 hours ago I was literally spamming a close button trying to get out of that god awful event UI that you all jacked up and now you are telling me that I shouldn’t spam a button when nothing is happening? Brah.
