  • And here I thought that they will do *at least* Tsunkatse Seven justice... What's actually funny, is that the lighting in that episode would perfectly fit the DB yellow/blue vision for the character art. Huge ball drop on this one.

Can someone explain what it is that's so bad about her? I'm not seeing anything especially egregious. She looks more realistic than the other two. I'm genuinely asking, not being facetious.

In my personal opinion, it is the bland coloring of the skin and hair. The blood smudges look unrealistic, as if someone smeared some red on top of her skin. To me, McCoy looks the best of the three, as it is closest to the TOS old camera feel, where the colors were slightly more bland due to the technical limitations.

That being said, I will still go all out in the event, as I like playing faction events. Some people might not enjoy the 3 hour wait, but for me, that's the selling point of it - I can go about my day normally, without STT taking the bigger portion of it :)
  • The other problem.i having seen mentioned about this is that Seven is not a Starfleet officer. It is picking nits, but still.

I think she was an Academy instructor in one or two of the books. Not sure if you have to be in Starfleet to teach at the Academy though. Certainly in general canon it's peculiar to describe her as Fleet.

To me, it's the shading. Her face is shaded so dark that she looks like an entirely different woman to me.

In fact, to me that's what makes this new art less than stellar.
Not only are details left unrefined, they are often just treated as a gradient blob.
Then the shading is all super dark now that it emphasizes the wrong features of a character.

Let's look at some part character art - Seven, McCoy, and then Data (because Mirror Data was heavily criticized).

    798o2oqibbsq.png

Only on the Tsunkatse Seven is the shading so dark, the rest of her variants look like herself.

On McCoy, all of them look like himself but look at the stark degradation of details - in Prisoner Bones you can see details such as some individual strands of hair, in Gladiator Bones his hair is all one big mop.

On Data, all of his variants are well detailed, except for Mirror Data who looks like his face is made of wax then someone glided a hot spoon over it, causing it to be melty to a degree. Mainly, his features all kind of run together with all other aspects of his face like his facial structure angles. What is interesting is that Friar Tuck Data was released after Mirror Data, yet FT Data has the nuance of detail like the old artwork did. Makes me think FT Data has been made for some time but wasn't released until recently and after the change of artist took place.

May I add to that that we also have 3 factions - Klingons, Hirogen, and Maquis. We also have three new crew members, so it makes sense that each of them will be supported by a faction. So I guess Seven is Hirogen (due to her Hirogen trainer), McCoy is Klingon (since he had the most dealings with the empire) and Tasha is... Maquis?! Who also fight for DIL for the Federation... How generous of the Hirogen, Kilgons and Maquis to support crew who will win a decisive amount of DIL for Starfleet :)

Maybe all the Qpid characters were drawn at once, and DB decided to stagger their release. It would make sense to do characters from themed episodes all at one time.

And yes, I fully agree that the quality in general has gone down since they parted ways with Mike Gardner. It's more flat for want of a better word. But I really don't think this Seven is any worse than most of the characters from the last few months. To my eyes it's recognisably her and isn't blatantly cartoonish. Klingon O'Brien, Mirror Reed, Mirror Data, Mirror Vic and T'Mir all look a lot worse. T'Mir is practically the dictionary definition of flat.

I think Seven looks okay, from what I can see - I'm mainly relieved that she's in her Keanu action pose, not just standing at rest like a lot of the screen shots google turned up when I went looking, which had me worried. Hopefully the full image, without McCoy in the way, sells the dynamic pose well.

People look like different people when the ambient light is darker? I haven't noticed that, though I'm not the most observant.

It's easier to write than "two Starfleet Officers and one liberated Borg Drone who served on a Starfleet ship."

Wow.. ok well I was on the fence about competing for Yar and Seven... now that I've seen the art this will be a hard pass for me. Not even thresholds.

The right side's the one, yes? Or am I doing this whole look thing totally wrong...

Unfortunately, from this point forward, I'm forced to compare all new artwork to the worst of the recent crew, so yes, I will say that Yar is not great, and doesn't really feel like a representation of Denise Crosby, but "at least she's not Mirror Data bad". And I also know that DB will probably never return to the detailed artwork we once had (insert sad face emoji here), so it is with reluctant acknowledgement of that circumstance that I say, I think McCoy and Seven actually look pretty decent (considering). To me, they both look very much like the actors, which is sort of unexpected these days as well (given the decently-done but not-at-all-LeVar-Burton-like Mirror Geordi we got recently).

Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

I just want to know what McCoy's stats are, he's the only one I'm interested in, as much as Seven is one of my favourite characters ever.

If McCoy is MED primary, SEC secondary, and something (I presume DIP or SCI) tertiary, then I'll probably spring for him.
If he's MED secondary but the MED is very strong, then like SEC primary, DIP/SCI tertiary, I'll probably still make a concerted effort.
If he's only two-skill, my want for him will go down a bit but really depends on how strong his MED is. I'm tired of us getting lots of 2-skill crew lately.
If his MED isn't strong in any case, I won't bother at all.

  • Artists are probably cutting corners trying to meet too tight of deadlines because they are pumping out three new crew each week.

An all-Combs event would be fun, if a bit ridiculous. What would thematically link Weyoun, Shran, and Brunt? Nothing's coming to mind. Open to suggestions.

Another fun one could be an all Majel Barrett-Roddenberry event. Chapel, Lwaxana, and the original Number One! Again, not sure of a theme to tie them together.

Or, what about an all-Diana Muldaur event? Dr. Katherine Pulaski, Dr. Miranda Jones, and Dr. Ann Mulhall. I think I see a theme for that one!

Andoria joins the Dominion, but it leads to a financial crisis and Brunt comes to save the day.

Seven's hair makes her look like she's an over stressed work two jobs soccer mom who hasn't had an hour to herself in about 4 years.

Fix that and I think she'd look quite decent.

Decent work on the faces for all three, but it's like you put days of work on to the face and then 15 minutes before the instructions have to go to press you frantically add on proportionate shaped blobs with the smallest amount of detail.

I actually quite like the lighting, tone and photorealism of her, save the hair.

    Oh and planet "892 IV". ? 8924 ?

That rings cheesey enough to be an actual tos name.. but if it's not, just . Make up something better. Numbers-Roman numerals are still just all numbers to me.

Ha ha yeah, the artwork is terrible once again! Yar is the worse I would say (Still better than Mirror Data but still).

I can safely save my Dilithium for this event; out of principle I refuse to spend money on shoddy goods.

    Updated the original post with:

    Bonus crew:
    • high bonus: event crew
    • small bonus: variants McCoy, variants of Seven of Nine and variants of Yar.
Event factions: Maquis, Klingon Empire, Hirogen

    What about Sela?

Why would she count? She was Tasha's daughter... Does Wesley count for Beverly bonus crew?

Cause she is the same actress. Probably Sela wont count but she should. Not many Yars have been released.

Then I suppose Weyoun and Brunt should count for Shran.
Fine with me if all Jeffrey Combs give bonus when a Jeffrey Combs character is in an event. I am not saying that DB has to do this or that it makes sense, just that it is fun. Sometimes it is fun for a company to give a nod to the actors playing the characters and not just the characters themselves. It's why so many of us want a Jeffrey Combs event.

I want a Combs event too, but if it's a Ferengi event, having Weyoun or Shran give a bonus wouldn't make sense.

    Faction Event.

    Federation for Shran
    Dominion for Weyoun
    Ferengi Traditionalists for Brunt

A fair point. If Seven had the Starfleet trait, she'd be part of my regular cadet mission crew.

Looks like another week of second-tier artwork. :p
    Artwork check:

    Yar - Horrible, just horrible
    Mc Coy - Bad
Seven - kind of OK, besides the slobby and non detailed hair

Whelp, I think this is the new standard/first Tier for DB art. The exception becomes when we get good art.

I'm still mostly collecting cards on stats, but the new art trend is certainly uninspiring and not something I want anybody to see if I get caught playing this game.
Sooner or later this has got to start taking a toll on income, even if it's just drive by players that would have downloaded then saw what they were getting, and kept on scrolling.
  • Completely confused about the Factions and the relation with the bonus crew...

Seven: Not Maquis, Not Klingon, fought against Hirogen - bit of a stretch
McCoy: Not Maquis, Not Klingon, Not even remotely Hirogen - fought Romans
Yar: Ditto, but friends with Worf, so...? (Again a stretch)

Though there don't seem to be any obvious choices to contradict this, I would have thought Federation over Maquis at the very least. I was also thinking Terran Empire makes more sense than Klingon or Maquis, even though we have had them quite a bit lately.

One of the episodes had McCoy siding with the Maquis, perhaps the same will be true here. Seven was trained by a Hirogen and Yar was friends with a Klingon. All are a stretch but I think someone at DB realizes that we haven’t seen much of these factions in recent events and it is nice to mix things up.

Given Tasha's backstory, I could see her theoretically siding with the Maquis if she had lived long enough. So if she was being backed by the Maquis or something, I'd get that.

Tsunkatse Seven was trained by a Hirogen that episode (a J.G. Hertzler Hirogen no less), so that makes sense.

McCoy makes the least sense to me. Is he being backed by the Klingons? Is he fighting against a Klingon? Both seem quite unlikely.

The Tsunkatse episode had some pretty heavy Hirogen storylines.... In fact, seven ended up being centered around a Hirogen's teachings which is what allowed her to survive when her life was being threatened by Delta Quadrant Weyoun. I don't think the Hirogen connection is that much of a stretch at all here

The rest though? I got nothing
