Years ago for every little accident I had say knocking a glass (lets make it the fine crystal glasses) off the table by sheer clumsiness spilling contents and shards of glass everywhere - I would get frustrated and chastise my stupidity berating myself endlessly to the bitter end, but it took a while and with some moderation from the other half you can change, grudgingly or willingly. It may take a while and a bit of reprogramming from the cursed experiential childhood learning, but it can be achieved and can be very liberating.
But I didn't go down the hypnosis route and it's not necessarily easy.

I need somebody to hypnotize me and plant the command that it is OK to spend merits.
They aren’t earning interest so you might as well spend them. I used to hang onto about 10k, now I have about 7k, and slowly working my way down to 4-5k. There isn’t anything to spend them on other than the 725 merit crew pack (which we didn’t used to have) or faction items, and I don’t find faction items every day that I need as I only work on 2-3 crew at a time. I do find the 25-50 merit items of use as they can be harder to farm. (Looking at you 0* case files).
Credits are the same way. Nothing to use them on other than the replicator, faction items, or the small crew/boost packs. I use the replicator judiciously but then splurge on those PITA legendary items (ahem, Leonardo da Vinci).
To each their own, and I do keep a reserve and probably have more than some would recommend to sit on (I have about 5.5m credits, 7k merits, 16k chronitons), but it’s in game currency that has limited application and doesn’t earn interest.

I hear your words and I understand your logic, it will just take me time, lol. My personality is one of balancing extremes, and I know I have to either force myself to save, or I spend impulsively! My worry is I allow myself to spend say 30K at once and before you know it I'm down to 6 left! I almost wish I could hire a broker to manage this fir me
Actually though, I do need more than most, I spent about 300 merits a day refreshing Gauntlet match ups, to get more favorable pairings to allow me to win more, which lets me run more pairings every 4 hours, which will get me to the 20,000 round achievement ASAP (within reason). I managed to go from 10,000 to 11,000 really fast this way, and I will not waiver from that path until I get a copy of Locutus!
To further illustrate how game playing philosophies can vary, my merit expenditure is probably something like 1% pulls, 19% faction-only items, and 80% Gauntlet refreshes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well if it leads to 50k worth of honor or unlocking an exclusive card who can argue with that.

I'm probably 80% gauntlet, 15% pulls, 5% shuttles. Maybe not that high on shuttles, just whatever it takes for faction events and enough to run shuttles the rest of the time. With the extra merits we're getting from campaigns and revised event rewards I'm increasing what I spend on pulls since I don't need even more in merits. I tend to keep 5-10k in reserve so I don't run out in gauntlet, I let it rise to about 30k and then do a bunch of merit pulls coincided with other portal pulls to burn down my stock.

I'm right there with you, I spend a lot each day on Gauntlet to brush off all the bad pairings to get good ones. I'm still a gambler and roll the dice on even sketchy pairings if there is a chance I can win, but I skip right passed the ones where I have no chance, and I don't ever feel bad about it.

Depending on if it's the first or second day in the gauntlet and what my active streak is, I will refresh past mirror pairings too if I want to keep a streak going.

For me at least it is 100% about getting Locutus. I wish I had taken screenshots or taken detailed notes, but i'm pretty sure I did 1,100 Gauntlet rounds over the last 31 days, and at that clip I'll be able to chase down that that 20,000 achievement in hopefully 8 months' time (I still have just under 9K left, so that is just a hopeful guess). So using merits to skip passed rounds I have no chance on helps me get through more rounds every 4 hours, increasing my total rounds run per day, which is the goal. It ALSO helps me chase Locutus by letting me win more trophies for those end of Gauntlet crates as well as enables more streak chests.
And believe me, when I finally get "a" Locutus, I'm getting 2 because I'm DYC'ing that if given the chance, and I'm going to FE both of them!
I think I've come up with a way I can do this, but it will take some time; I need to first figure out how many merits I spend in a week normally, how many I earn in a week on average, and then arrive at my own personal minimum value that I cannot go below. Once I do that, I have figured out a way I can spend some merits in a way that won't lead to reckless/deficit spending, and as a bonus, it may give us all something fun to do some future Tuesday!
@Dirk Gunderson Wow, 1 citation per year really is... less than I even expected when I wrote "gets you nowhere". Interesting still.
According to the drop rates listed in the merit pack one pack drops 6,7269 stars on average btw. (taking 5*s also into account which likely will not be turned into honor, but their probability is microscopic anyway). So that equals 168 honor per pull.
Low probability !== zero probability
I've definitely had three 5* drops from merit pulls, potentially a fourth, in Mirror Kirk (550 honour as RNG used to hand him out like candy in begolds for me), Momma Troi and Interfaced Barclay.
I've also had several 4*s drop, and whilst the honour-per-pack isn't oodles it does accrue over time.
Each to their own, but I personally enjoy merit pulls.
What I meant was that I did not subtract the 5*s from the average, even though they are hardly ever honor which makes them irrelevant for @Dirk Gunderson's calculation.
Dailies & fleet go by themselves, for me there is no special effort in that. From time to time I buy packs which unload plenty of honor in comparison to what merits reward via meritpacks. I still buy them whenever I pass 10.5k, so it is not like I never aquire any. Just the drawn line is debateable. I aquire the honor like anyone else (maybe less due to also spending merits on items which has epically been discussed), just a few days later as I keep a stash. I do not see how this is an issue.
It was different if I had the desire to increase the stash all the time, but I do not.
So we discuss about having 10k vs. 7k others have and everyone is fine with. Statistically 3000 merits are around 700 honor. I am 3 years behind in gameplay - I doubt that these 700 honor will make the ultimate difference.

It is OK to spend merits. It is OK to spend merits. It is OK to spend merits.
If I stare at this long enough it’s oddly relaxing
