I love the TOS movies (except V)

I consider myself quite a rarity in the Trek community as I quite like The Final Frontier. I admit, it's not my favourite of the Trek movies but I feel it has been given a bad rap over the years and isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is.

It even gave us some really memorable scenes such as Kirk, Spock and McCoy around the campfire.

I would argue that it's better than Generations and far better than Nemesis.

But, I also really like The Motion Picture too... lol

Final Frontier has some truly terrible plot ideas but some of the best execution of any of the films. I also cherish the camping moments, the humor, how the relationship between Kirk/Spock/McCoy has grown over the years, and even Kirk and Sybok discussing the nature of pain and how painful experiences have an effect on a person’s development. I even liked the idea of Sybok himself - it is one of the very rare times (until Enterprise) that we see a Vulcan behaving less...Vulcanish. That’s refreshing. All that being said, I very much appreciated how David A. Goodman explained the film’s existence in his Autobiography of James T. Kirk: the events depicted were themselves a (poorly) made film by the inhabitants of 892-IV based on their experiences with the Enterprise crew.

As for TMP...it was a lot of special effects porn, given the budgets and technology they had compared to the original series run. They got a little carried away with it, though I agree that it comes off more like 2001 (or even Blade Runner) in that you have to have a little more patience for how the plot unfolds. It’s not the masterpiece that is TWOK or Voyage home, but it’s not a bad film.

I would classify Insurrection as a bad film. There were some nice elements to it, which is about as much credit as I can give. I liked Nemesis, actually, and like it much, much more than Insurrection. Neither of them (nor Generations) holds a candle to First Contact, of course, which approaches TWOK-levels of excellence in my book.

Insurrection would have been a fine two or three part arc for the show, but as a standalone movie it didn't quite work. I'm iffy on Nemesis, parts of it I like, parts of it I don't, but as a whole it's pretty meh. First Contact is definitely the best of the TNG movies, but that's a pretty low bar. I don't like the whole action hero/Ahab Picard thing, but the rest is solid.
You do not like the Ahab Picard thing!?! That brought us the best speech in star trek history: THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HERE, THIS FAR, NO FURTHER!
    lsp6t1ocu0j4.gif

The action hero/Ahab thing made a ton of sense in this context anyway and given his history with the Borg it certainly didn't feel out of place. The Ahab thing goes without saying, he's letting his personal experience with his white whale to influence his judgement... As for the "action hero" it's not like we didn't see Picard flex those pipes before, most recently in the travesty of a bridge scene in Generations

It's sad that First Contact is the only good TNG movie, but it's the 2nd best Trek movie all time, so I can live with it

    Everyone,
it would really, REALLY help if you could create another discussion when addressing another topic. Thanks.

As for Chancellor L'Rell, of course she is Discovery crew and will provide some bonus for the duration of the Mega-Event.

Why is she not in the list? Because at the time of the list, she was not really in the game yet. It is a loose-loose situation where if I had added her someone would have surely pointed out she was not available yet #cantwin :)

    Happy Monday Shan!

    Dabo!

It did feel like I was nit-picking, sorry, but I wanted to be sure. o:)

First Contact was the best ST movie of them all.

Only Picard could pull off Ahab in the 24th century.

That scene with the the first warp ship blasting off to Steppenwolf was priceless. Best moment in ST history.

Let the wrath begin now......... 🤗

  • Shan, be grateful that the conversation went to who likes what movies, rather than how a large part of the community couldn't care less about a Disco mega... (myself included)

Well, I'm personally excited, and after seeing Anthony Rapp last night, I'm hoping for a new Stamets SR

On T'Kuvma: I wouldn't be surprised if they had him as the $10 deal this week or next. They did that with the Borg Queen a couple weeks ago during our two-week Borg mini event. Given that T'Kuvma is only two stats and of middling value even in those two, he seems like a good fit for the $10 deals.

Details of this are not as clear as they will look in game but otherwise they all look good. I must have them. Since Kol is wearing Captain Georgiou's comm badge I am going to pretend he is in Starfleet.

They all look alright, even Smiley Kol.

Kinda curious as to why Mirror Garak was listed as event crew for this event but is not shown on the art. Mirror Stamets was not listed but is in the art...
I know many folks unvaulted garak in anticipation of using him this week.
Can you shed some light on this please

It's art for the entire mega, not for this week.

  • Well, it seems odd.. That number 1, (at least a version of her) is this week, Kor, the Mega, is all weeks, Section 31 Georgiou is also this week—
certainly makes one scratch their head

Welp, looks like I'll be blowing a lot of dilithium on event packs chasing Number One.

Anyone else getting a weird Margaery Tyrell vibe off Shakespearean Villain Georgiou? It's in the quirk of her mouth, just that little "I'm totally smarter than you" smirk.

    These. Are. Awesome.

Well, the three on the right.
    Accepted. Mark them, Galt.

Well, your prime concern was Garak not giving a bonus this week - but he will do that. That artwork is an apetizer for the whole event. And since the quality of the art is great a good one. Nothing odd really. Showing an old card like Garak in a teaser for a Discovery event would be odd though.

Also while you can win Number 1 at the end of the event, she will first come into play next week.
  • Hooray Mirror Stamets!

I have a feeling that those shooting gloves Stamets is wearing are going to be his version of Prisoner Michael Burnham's Food Trays. But, he and Her Highness look awesome.

Yes I will be buying many packs to get Number One provided she is not two skill only. Rebecca Romijn is awesome! I am going to pretend she is Mystique in disguise. As for Mirror Garak art, as he exists already we know what he will look like.

Stammets doesn't look right to me. The rest look pretty good. I hope to catch 'em all.

You just lost and totally confused me. What scene is that? I was referring to Z.C's first warp flight with Riker and LaForge.

Starfleet didn't trust Picard to face the Borg. He still went to the Battle of Sector 001

  • I’m hoping that there will be some fairly new Disco crew as thresholds and lower level achievement rewards. Once the VP structure changed to nosebleed high levels to meet all thresholds, I’m struggling with even meeting thresholds on faction events. So, the gold crew in the 1500 place range aren’t even a concern for me, since I won’t be achieving that level for a while. Anyway, I find the new VP/reward structure very frustrating.
