Is there going to be a way to score T’Kuvma next week? He is too powerful in the Arena for anyone that never had a chance to land him.
Doubtful. Unless they do some kind of theme pack with Disco Klingon crew and include him the general premium packs, and their huge pool of crew, are the only way to get him. FWIW, I don't use him in arena and can get the number one spot frequently.
It really should get more love around here than it does. I would encourage anyone who lacks enthusiasm for it to revisit some episodes. It's thought provoking, it's neat, and it's a whole lot of fun!
I watched the whole series for the first time last year. It's a good show. Keep in mind that the special effects are 50ish years old. There's thought provoking stuff and good interactions between the main crew. I also recommend giving it a chance for those who haven't.
As far as Number One, I would like to see both TOS and DSC versions. I would have liked TOS first, but since we didn't get it, can we have Talos IV Prisoner Number One at some point? (soon?)
People not loving the writing or the special effects or the acting or whatever need to keep in mind the show was made in the Sixties. Today, the new "ship of the week" can be made on a computer. In the Sixties, the ships were actual physical models. The whole reason transporters is a thing is because it was not in the budget to make a shuttle model. They only got a shuttle later, because one of the model companies {AMT, IIRC} agreed to make a model for the show in exchange for the rights to make model kits of ships from the show for sale in stores.
The writing was done by many different writers. Some scripts were medicre, especially by today's standards. But, some were great scripts. Great writers like DC Fontana, Theodore Sturgeon, and Harlan Ellson contributed scripts.

For me the biggest block with TOS has never really been the effects or the stories - it's the acting. It's all very Shakespearen and not at all natural, and sometimes it can really take me out of the story. Obviously it's a product of its time, and none of this means that "City on the Edge of Forever" doesn't pack a punch...but I still have a hard time enjoying it because of it.

This will be the fourth event Mirror Garak is a featured character:
Ranked reward for the Liberty for All event as well as it's re-run, Faction event An Even Field, and part two of the Dominion mega event The Hand That Feeds!.
That's 5 total events. It's a shame some other old four star crew couldn't have a chance to be used in an event for a change.
If they want to involve the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in an event, they don't have too many other options.
There aren't even many options to add to STT: Mirror Odo, a klingon named Telok, and while a bit of a stretch, Mirror D'Ghor.
Plenty of awesome non-canon options. Beyond the obvious choices like Dukat and Martok, it would be cool to get a non-DS9 character like Seska or Torres.

I’m always shocked at how many Star Trek fans hate TOS.
Hate is a strong word. I wouldn't say I hate TOS, but I'd say it can be tough for people born and raised several decades after TOS first aired to go back and watch it. It's very rough, can be very campy at times, can be all over the place tonally, and it's just so very different than the TOS movies, TNG and anything that came after it (obvious since Rodenberry spent the decades after TOS refining what was Trek).
I love the TOS movies (except V), they're far and away better than the TNG films (just my opinion) but outside of a few episodes I just cannot watch TOS. I say that as someone who grew up without cable television and whose first exposure to Star Trek was via my dad's collection of TOS on VHS. I saw the whole thing 3-4 times as a kid, but after first seeing TNG there was no going back.
If I'm going to try and get a friend into watching Star Trek, I'd probably tell them to watch just a few key TOS episodes, skip the rest and go straight to watching the movies, then TNG (maybe skip chunks of seasons 1-2) and so on.
I’m 30. I didn’t start watching Trek until a couple of years ago. I started with TNG and loved it, then watched TOS and loved it even more. A show being good or not has nothing to do with being alive when it was on.
I consider myself quite a rarity in the Trek community as I quite like The Final Frontier. I admit, it's not my favourite of the Trek movies but I feel it has been given a bad rap over the years and isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is.
It even gave us some really memorable scenes such as Kirk, Spock and McCoy around the campfire.
I would argue that it's better than Generations and far better than Nemesis.
But, I also really like The Motion Picture too... lol

Actually, specials effects are 10 years old because it was remastered in 2008 or something.

Nope - quite enjoy it actually. Everything feels and flows more naturally by that point. TWOK, as well.
When I was a kid and not understanding any of the allegories, it was all just a little too "old" for my taste. Mind you, I feel this way about pretty much any TV from that era, not just TOS. But although my understanding of what's going on has obviously grown a lot over the years, that initial impression is still there - I appreciate the show a lot, but it's never going to be my favorite series.
But that doesn't mean I don't want to see more of those characters in the game - it's ridiculous that it has taken this long for Number One to make it into the game. And Marlena Moreau and Commodore Decker would totally be in the game by now if they had been featured in the TNG era. I wish they could give us a list of actors who have declined the use of their images so that we could all stop getting our hopes up.

Growing up I never liked The Motion Picture. It was too "weird" compared to TWOK and the rest, it was the one I watched maybe once and the others would watch a bunch of times over the course of my childhood, but I watched it again for the first time in a very long time recently and really enjoyed it. It's 2001: A Space Odyssey-esque and if I'm honest, could still probably use a few more passes through the editing room, but it was a lot better than younger me remembers.
The story from the Motion Picture would be perfect for adaptation into a mini-series these days. Have the movie split down into about 6 parts - a part where the Klingons fight the cloud, a part for the relaunch of the Enterprise and it having problems going to warp, a part where Spock comes back... it would be awesome.
Imagine if this is what they had done for Phase II rather than releasing TMP!
I get what you are saying but it just seems so weird that people are getting so angry about not having Majel Barrett's Number One.
You keep mentioning people being angry. What I’m seeing is a lot of people are disappointed that after three years of requests for Majel’s Number One they may feel that best chance for getting her into the game may have past.
Personally I’d hoped that after we’ve gotten Pike, Vina, Spock and The Keeper that we would get Number One and maybe Boyce and Colt from the same episode. That doesn’t mean I don’t also want Disco Number One as well.
Exactly this. I'm not up to date on Disco as I'm in the UK and will watch on netflix (but waiting for a bit so I don't need so many months of subs). But honestly think Majel Barrett's No.1 has more than earnt her place in this game. As others have said. That role was ground breaking at the time even if that seems bizarre looking back now. Clearly it isn't a rights issue, so I really hope she gets added soon.

Final Frontier has some truly terrible plot ideas but some of the best execution of any of the films. I also cherish the camping moments, the humor, how the relationship between Kirk/Spock/McCoy has grown over the years, and even Kirk and Sybok discussing the nature of pain and how painful experiences have an effect on a person’s development. I even liked the idea of Sybok himself - it is one of the very rare times (until Enterprise) that we see a Vulcan behaving less...Vulcanish. That’s refreshing. All that being said, I very much appreciated how David A. Goodman explained the film’s existence in his Autobiography of James T. Kirk: the events depicted were themselves a (poorly) made film by the inhabitants of 892-IV based on their experiences with the Enterprise crew.
As for TMP...it was a lot of special effects porn, given the budgets and technology they had compared to the original series run. They got a little carried away with it, though I agree that it comes off more like 2001 (or even Blade Runner) in that you have to have a little more patience for how the plot unfolds. It’s not the masterpiece that is TWOK or Voyage home, but it’s not a bad film.
I would classify Insurrection as a bad film. There were some nice elements to it, which is about as much credit as I can give. I liked Nemesis, actually, and like it much, much more than Insurrection. Neither of them (nor Generations) holds a candle to First Contact, of course, which approaches TWOK-levels of excellence in my book.
I wonder which 5* will be the $9.99 offer for the week... DB could make a lot of money with some of the options.
Which means, it will probably be, what... Ripper or Rejac?
Probably one of the five star Garaks. None of the Disco crew are old enough for them to want to sell at the $9.99 price point.
Sigh. My logs show that I've used 2/5 Elim Garak in exactly one Voyage (and no where else) since the beginning of November. I just don't know if he would be worth upping to 3 :-(
I love this discussion about TOS vs. other Trek entities, but y'all know that Shan is gonna come on here on Monday morning and say, "Hi all — Let's try to keep this thread on topic," right?

I mean anything is possible and I have no info one way or another, but other than a possible theme pack it just doesn’t seem likely to me. Of course DB often does things that don’t seem likely to me.

If Tkuvma is featured in an event people will scream after FFing him with honor/dyc last year. But I could easily see a theme pack feature all Discovery crew including Tkuvma.
Of course, given DB's lack of foresight, maybe Tkuvma will be an event crew.

It was either talk about what we dig about TOS or have nine pages about why Disco is an abomination unto the Lord until the packs go live on Wednesday. Personally, I found the former refreshing.

Insurrection would have been a fine two or three part arc for the show, but as a standalone movie it didn't quite work. I'm iffy on Nemesis, parts of it I like, parts of it I don't, but as a whole it's pretty meh. First Contact is definitely the best of the TNG movies, but that's a pretty low bar. I don't like the whole action hero/Ahab Picard thing, but the rest is solid.
I liked Generations, it's not great and it's not bad, it's just alright. I always tear up when Data finds Spot at the end. That gets me in the feels like Spock and Kirk at the end of TWOK.
Which leads me to my next question, when are we going to get Irradiated Spock? What about Captain Terrell (pre or post-ear bug thing)? Poor, poor Peter Preston? And Khaaaaaaaaaaan! Kirk?

The Ahab thing kind of worked for me. It shows that, even years later, Picard still has some pretty particular feelings about the Borg. A wrestling match and some tears weren’t all that he needed to be over things after all...it helped make the stoically indomitable captain look more human again.
Which leads me to my next question, when are we going to get Irradiated Spock? What about Captain Terrell (pre or post-ear bug thing)? Poor, poor Peter Preston? And Khaaaaaaaaaaan! Kirk?
Yes, please. I also had an idea today for another Scotty: the scene in Final Frontier where he is trying to fix the two consoles at the same time...I couldn’t find a screenshot or a clip and I am away from my computer right now, but it would be a really fun set of artwork for a new 5* Montgomery Scott (ENG/SCI/COM). Also, while trolling though clips, a 4* General Korrd would be a nice crew as well.

A high level Adm hinted that he had inside info- vague- but assured me T’Kuvma would be there. As you might guess, I had doubts, enough so to ask it here. Some people must want to be big shots.
Imagine if this is what they had done for Phase II rather than releasing TMP!
I just don't know if he would be worth upping to 3 :-(
(Hey, when the cat's away, the mice will play, Shan. )
Could you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

Many of the characters cross over into TOS. Just saying.
^ This. Plus belly chuckle.
